In Queue Review: Grabbers

The Story: Jeffrey from Coupling and George from Being Human are in a town where aliens have landed. These aliens don’t care for people with a high blood alcohol level. So naturally, they land off the coast of Ireland. What, Russia too cold?

Best Line: “We need more akke-hooo!”

In a nutshell: Fun, funny and exciting without being exhausting, Grabbers hits the spot if you’re searching for a funky mashup of horror, love story and comedy. It’d be a perfect ending to a late night monster movie session.

The Good: Love the Grabber-Cam, a monster’s eye view of the scene. Funny and a nice touch. Speaking of love, watching the characters try their best to fight the creatures while completely trashed? Awesome.

Then there’s the special effects. Brilliantly done, but not overused. The monsters are really spooky, and the FX team brings them to life with a blend of CGI and on-camera effects that blend together perfectly. Which makes the climax a helluva lot of fun to watch. The whole film is a heckuva lot of fun to watch, truth be told. Combine the great FX with a slew of actors totally game for whatever, and stir. Delicious.

The Bad: Not much gore at all. It focuses on the characters reactions to the Grabbers. That said, there’s a head or two knocking around, but if you’re expecting blood and eviscerated monsters? Not so much.

Plus, for a movie that focuses on getting folks trashed to save their lives, there’s surprisingly little to work with for a drinking game. Maybe take a shot every time you see a Grabber?

(Yeah, I had to scrape hard for the bad in this.)

The Everything Else:
Thank you, Grabbers; because of you I’ve picked up the following awesome Irish slang….
* pissed as a fart
* tear the arse out of it
* shut yer hole

And btw, there’s a touch of a love story, as sparks fly between the straighlaced temporary police officer and the functioning alcoholic she’s partnered with in town. No really, it works.

Here’s the breakdown:

Would I watch it again?: heck yeah. There’s very little gore, and it has some of my favorite BBC folks in it. Perfect for friends and family that need to be tempted into horror because they don’t want to be grossed out. And I plain-old enjoyed it.
Should you see it?: In the mood for funny with a side of action – horror? Damn straight you should watch this.
My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
