I’ve always wanted to hit Dragon-Con. Heck, I’d like to get up off it and hit New York Comic-Con. Why? Because these cons hit later in the year, after con season typically packs up and starts prepping for next year. But I’d rather stick closer to home if I’m able. I’m lazy, and I like to drag my ill-gotten goods home without getting an unromantic pat down by airport security. (Seriously; buy a girl a latte first y’all.)
So when I heard about Intervention, a Sci-Fi/Fantasy con here in Maryland? I had to know more. This year, it’s September 16-18, 2016, which is a groovy time to cosplay, weather-wise. Not too hot if you’re rockin’ head-to-toe vinyl or latex, not too cold if Power Girl or He-Man is more your style. A quick 411? Why certainly:
Intervention is an annual event celebrating Science Fiction, Fantasy, Pop Culture, and the Art that surrounds them. Come meet the creators, actors, developers, and producers of your favorite works – and also learn about the process of how it’s all made. It’s a 3 day fandom party for nerds and geeks of all types.
Intervention will be at the Hilton Washington DC, right on Rockville Pike. THISCLOSE to Twinbrook Metro. Which means if you can’t stand dealing with parking every time you hit a con…this time you don’t have to. Boom. (Me? I can bike there from my sister’s house. So I got that going for me. Which is nice.)
While I’m late to the Intervention party – this is its 7th year, after all – folks I trust say this is a groovy, laid-back atmosphere, and very welcoming to the fannish of all makes and models. Read on for the full PR deets, and I’ll keep you updated on guests and other info!
Intervention, Rockville’s Sci-Fi / Fantasy Convention announces major expansion to its programming and guests for its 7th year
Intervention: The Intersection of Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Future Media in Rockville, Maryland is proud to announce a major expansion for its 7th year bringing you a “Dragon Con-style” Sci-Fi and Fantasy experience to the Mid-Atlantic area.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of Dragon Con-style conventions but it was tough for many of my friends to travel that far. I’m incredibly happy to be able to bring that to Maryland and implement it with the same family-friendly, community-centric point of view that permeates (Re)Generation Who, my Doctor Who convention.” – Intervention and (Re)Generation Who Founder and Showrunner, Oni Hartstein
In previous years, Intervention has welcomed the likes of musician Paul Sabourin (of Paul and Storm), actor Terry Molloy (Davros of Doctor Who), artist Molly Crabapple, producer Harold Buchholz (Archie Comics/Mystery Science Theater 3000), and many other top creators to the event as guests. This year Gigi Edgley (Farscape’s Chiana), Todd Haberkorn (Anime Voice Actor: “Hetalia”, “Fairy Tale”; Actor: “Spock”, “Star Trek Continues”), Robert Axelrod (Lord Zedd, Power Rangers), and fan favorite webcomic artist Pete Abrams (Sluggy Freelance) have already been announced. Many more guests will be revealed in the next several weeks.
Attendees can expect panel programming that reflects modern and classic Sci–Fi and Fantasy such as Farscape, Star Trek, Anime, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and more multi-genre geekery. Autograph and Photo Ops will be available all weekend with the celebrity guests. Attendees are encouraged to get involved and submit their panel ideas.
As always, the event will keep its positive community focus. 2016 will also see the launch of “Creator Spaces,” a set of half-table spaces offered at no charge where creators can take turns displaying and selling their goods. Intervention also prides itself on being a friendly, welcoming space for fans of all ages and backgrounds. Its harassment policy has served as a basis for many other cons’ policies. It also has a dedicated children’s programming track for families to share.
Intervention 7 takes place September 16-18, 2016 at the Hilton Washington DC/Rockville in Rockville, MD. Full weekend tickets are available at the pre-registration rate of $50 until Sept. 2nd 2016. Daily tickets also go on sale Sept. 2nd, 2016. Full Weekend Tickets at the door are $60. For more information about the event or to register, visit http://www.interventioncon.com.
