31 in 31: Monster Brawl

Story: ladies and gentlemen, let’s get ready to rumble! Two conferences – The Undead and Creatures, with a battle royal between the winning creature and undead. Who will come out on top?

Scares: Absolutely none. These monsters are watered down to wrestling caricatures. Yawn.

Splat factor: Pretty high, with tons of wrestling mayhem cranked up to lethal levels. Too bad it’s so cheesy. And don’t get me started on the cheap, badly done makeup FX that look like a neighborhood Halloween party group at midnight, when everybody’s makeup is starting to fall apart.

Closing scene “shocker”: Seriously? This movie has not a single shock, even with a last minute “surprise”.

Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: One of a kind. Fortunately.

Trick or Treat?: “I got a rock.” I know how you feel, Charlie Brown. Incredibly silly, this film is too goofy for horror fans. Perhaps wrestling fans would dig it as a comedy, but the gore may put off some. The best thing about this film? Lance Henriksen’s narrative voice-over. It’s a perfect “over serious announcer” vibe. His role is listed as “God” on IMDb. Really. *eyeroll*

Scott Foley much have needed money desperately to show up as one of the “wrestling announcer”, or director Jesse T. Cook has something on him. Meanwhile real-life wrestling agent/spokesperson Jimmy Hart probably thinks this is a high level movie. Sorry dude. There are other wrestling actors fighters here too, but I don’t care enough to list ’em. Why? The acting is bad, and the action is worse.

If Monster Brawl at least went full on comedy with the announcers (think Best In Show), it could have been a fun cult film. Instead, it’s a cool idea that could have been so much better than it turned out to be. Bummer.

Score:
out of 5 pumpkins. Only because they got Frankenstein’s monster – Frankenstein is the creator y’all! – right.
