“Real estate agents are crazier than zombies these days!”
Story: A strange square chicken monster starts creates zombies. (Just go with it.) So it’s up to two twenty-something idiots to save Hong Kong. Should be a piece of cake.
Scares: More WTF than scary.
Splat factor: Zombies, so expect bite marks and some blood. Also exploding heads that turn into skulls. Because of course they do.
Closing scene “shocker”?: Dude I don’t even know. I’m still trying to figure out that ending. But there is a mid-credits scene that sets up the possibility of a sequel, I think?
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Whoa doggy is this one original.
Trick or Treat?: This incoherent, surreal, and straight up nuts Hong Kong zombie flick plays with tropes, story, chronology, and just about every other thing that makes a film a functional story. Maybe this is a Hong Kong Shaun of the Dead on acid? That’s the only thing I can come up with after watching.
This film has got fast zombies, a chicken monster that creates zombies and lays eggs that knocks people’s heads off, and it’s crazypants. But there’s also lots of scenes that drag on too long, or don’t serve the story at all. So many subplots – dad trying to repay a debt, Auntie trying to shut out the world, daughter in a supernatural MiB-esque group, AND the two idiots. It’s a lot, and those are just the “main” stories here. Don’t get me started on the bowling cheerleaders.
The zombies show up big time 37 minutes in… But the outbreak is all of a sudden, with zero explanation. I’d understand that if it was just the idiot’s POV and that’s all they know, but as we get several POVs, it’s just confusing. There’s no main plot line, or any kind of focus on a coherent story. Zombiology just throws everything at its viewers, just for the hell of it. And while it’s crazy fun, this film is a head scratcher.
Get yourself good and loaded, and maybe Zombiology will come together for you…or you’ll be able to put aside the idea of films actually making sense and simply enjoy the batshit ride.
Score: 2.5 out of 5 pumpkins.
