Free Screening: Million Dollar Arm

image

Happy Star Wars Day y’all! No, this giveaway doesn’t have wookies, but it does have some Force. Arm force!

Fine. (Adjusts bow tie. Bow ties are cool.)

Today’s screening is Million Dollar Arm, a based-on-a-true-story pic starring John Hamm. I’ve seen the trailer, and it’s looking like heartstring tugging fun. ( Please. It’s from Disney Pictures. It should be.) Here’s the synopsis:

Based on a true story, sports agent JB Bernstein (Jon Hamm) finds that business has changed and things aren’t going well for his career. In a last ditch effort to save his livelihood he concocts a scheme to find baseball’s next great pitching ace. Hoping to find a young cricket pitcher he can turn into a major league baseball star, JB travels to India to produce a reality show competition called “The Million Dollar Arm.” With the help of cantankerous but eagle-eyed retired baseball scout Ray Poitevint (Alan Arkin), he discovers Dinesh (played by Madhur Mittal from “Slumdog Millionaire”) and Rinku (played by Suraj Sharma from “Life of Pi”), two 18 year old boys who have no idea about playing baseball, yet have a knack for throwing a fastball. Hoping to sign them to major league contracts and make a quick buck, JB brings the boys home to America to train. While the Americans are definitely out of their element in India — the boys, who have never left their rural villages — are equally challenged when they come to the States. As the boys learn the finer points of baseball — JB, with the help of his charming friend Brenda (Lake Bell) — learns valuable life lessons about teamwork, commitment and what it means to be a family.

Here’s how to grab a pair of passes for yourself….

Movie Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

amazing spider man 2

Nutshell: I give The Amazing Spider-Man 2 a C-.  Great performances by Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHann and Jamie Foxx aren’t enough to pull this choppy, drawn-out film from the depths of the barely-average.  But Greg Nicotero rocks the FX, as always.  Don’t stay past the credits looking for a bonus scene; you’ll get nothing but disappointment.

It’s sequel time, kiddies!  In this installment of The Life of Peter Parker: Teen Spider, Peter is graduating from high school, trying to keep his true love by his side even though he’s constantly nowhere near hers (unless you count Spidey-stalking), and of course, trying to save the world — or at least New York City — from all sorts of horrible bad guys.  Can he have it all?  Well….

If you’ve been wondering what happened to Peter’s mom and dad, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 delivers the goods.  Seems Mr. Parker was working on something that had weapons-grade potential (hint: SPIDERS.)  The film opens with what happened after Mom & Dad Spider-Man tried to break free of that mess.  Then, without a breath, the film slams you into present day, where a crazy punk-rock nihilistic Paul Giamatti is dragging his batshit crazy all over the streets of NYC.  Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy, class valedictorian, is about to give her speech.  (STAN LEE SIGHTING: he’s in the guest seats at graduation.)  Wanna guess what Peter’s doing?  You bet’cha.

Spidey does look like he’s having a heckuva time swinging around NYC in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  There’s even a woo-hoo or a yippee thrown in every so often.  Peter is getting his web on, and he ain’t ashamed.  There’s also a touch of X-Men with the montage of web-swinging mixed with press comments about vigilantism and questions about who’s responsible for the destruction caused by Spidey saving the day.  (I’ve always assumed that with all that super-destruction, NYC has FEMA on speed-dial.)  But that’s as deep as this film gets, as there’s villains to be had!  Here’s the breakdown:

Free Baltimore Screening – Legends Of Oz: Dorothy’s Return

image

Happy Monday! No? Well, would free passes help? Groovy baby. This time we’re leaving Kansas and headed to a place where your deadlines are moot. Here’s the deets….

Looks like Dorothy from Kansas is headed on another adventure in Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return. Here’s the synopsis from Disney:

Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return is a 3D-animated musical based on the adventure books by Roger Stanton Baum, the great-grandson of L. Frank Baum. A continuation of one of the world’s most popular and beloved fairy tales, Legends of Oz finds Dorothy (Lea Michele) waking to post-tornado Kansas, only to be whisked back to Oz to try to save her old friends the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd), the Lion (Jim Belushi), the Tin Man (Kelsey Grammer) and Glinda (Bernadette Peters) from a devious new villain, the Jester (Martin Short). Wiser the owl (Oliver Platt), Marshal Mallow (Hugh Dancy), China Princess (Megan Hilty) and Tugg the tugboat (Patrick Stewart) join Dorothy on her latest magical journey through the colorful landscape of Oz to restore order and happiness to Emerald City. Set to the tunes of Academy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Bryan Adams, Legends of Oz marks a charming, family-friendly return to the Oz franchise.

Okay, Patrick Stewart as a tugboat has my attention y’all. And Hugh Dancy (Hannibal, a show you need to be watching) is probably enjoying a role where he’s not dealing with body parts. Except marshmallow ones! Mmmm, marshmallows.

Here’s how to grab your pair o’ passes….

Movie Review: The Other Woman

wpid-image001.jpg

Nutshell: If I had to grade this, I’d give The Other Woman a B+.  It ain’t no Shakespeare, but it’s crazy, shameless and playful enough to give the folks in the cheap seats a good laugh.  And fellas, don’t be put off by the obvious chick-flick trappings; there’s lots of Three Stooges-like comedy here to enjoy, and also Kate Upton.

Let’s face it; nobody ever wants to find out that their spouse is cheating on her.  Nobody wants to find out that the person you’re dating is married to someone else.  But these things do happen in The Other Woman, and in this goofy romp at least the ladies get a laugh or twelve out of the deal.

Carly (Cameron Diaz) is the typical New York career gal; immaculately dressed, great apartment (GREAT apartment), and she’s just found a guy that’s crazy about her.  Or at least seems to be.  Seems dreamboat Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones) has something he’s been hiding from Carly; wife Katie (Leslie Mann).  Carly and Katie’s introduction is a definite Meet Cute — and nothing that hasn’t already been spoiled by the trailer — with Carly toppling over into Katie’s perfect Connecticut landscaping.  That’s a hint and a half that this movie will be less about the hurt men cause than it will be about a chick flick bonding extravaganza.  And it’s everything a pack of your BFF’s will wanna see, ladies.  There’s justifiable outrage, eeeeevil (okay, maybe not evil) vengeance, looking hot to stir up your ex, and enough booze to float Olivia Pope herself to the Bahamas.

Will the dudes like it?  If they are catagorically against chick flicks, no.  More’s the pity; the guys I sat with thoroughly enjoyed the film, laughing loud and long throughout.  Maybe it’s the slapstick and generous physical comedy involved.  Diaz is a genius in that regard, and Coster-Waldau gives her a run for her money in the banging himself up department.  In fact, I’m betting he saw this film as a teriffic way to blow off some steam from all the punnishment poor Jamie Lannister was dealt last season. Diaz is her usual uptight but secretly kooky gal that just needs to lighten up and enjoy life. She’s been playing this character for awhile now, and she’s damn good at it.  Mann is peak form too. Letting it all hang out as the Lily Pulitzer wearing wife of a guy that gets “more ass than a toilet seat”, she gets to play drunk, smashed and flat-out crazy.  She also gets to show the softer side of being cheated on, like when a fella does something nice and all vows for blood get thrown out the window.  It’s not just a “rich chick breakdown” role, which makes the moments where Katie does crack up all the more enjoyable.

Then there’s the other-other woman, who becomes part of the Carly-Katie vengeance syndicate.  Kate Upton, she of the amaaaaaa-zing Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues, plays Amber, a beautiful woman-child that is only a hair beyond the usual young airhead mistress cliché, but in this flick isn’t used as a one-joke blonde.  Upton gives Amber a bit of feeling, and a genuine sweetness that’s touching.  Don Johnson plays Carly’s free spirit dad, a guy in the middle of his 5th divorce – this time from one of Carly’s former sorority sisters – who comes in from time to time to give skewed but heartfelt fatherly advice. Is there a family resemblance? Not a bit. But they’re a lot of fun to watch as they banter back and forth.  Oh, and to round out the trio of dudes that balances the trio of ladies — Rom-Com 101 y’all — there’s Taylor Kinney (Chicago Fire) as Katie’s brother-slash-contractor Phil, who comes in after a particularly nasty snap on Katie’s part.

What’s also great in The Other Woman are the location shoots.  The Hamptons, the Bahamas, and more glorious real estate to chuck a wedding ring at.  We’re talking champagne and caviar dreams here y’all.  Okay, maybe champers and cav from the Whole Foods, but it’s still mighty bling.  With all this conspicuous excess, it’s really “Love and Revenge Among the 1%ers”. Then again, with all that obvious wealth, little things like how they can afford to do this or go there don’t bust the groove. Viewers that have even the slightest inkling of how rom-coms or gal-pal flicks work will see the ending coming a mile away. But Diaz, Mann and Upton make it a fun trip.

Wanna be a part of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 premier? Baby, you can.

image

Yeah. Petey's got his work cut out for him.... (image: marvel.wikia.com)

As a Spider-Nerd, I ain’t afraid to say that I’m looking forward to this film. Okay, I’ll probably have a love/hate thing going on in my head – anyone who knows the story of Peter and Gwen knows this film probably won’t be smooth sailing for our lovebirds – but seeing how they’re planning on telling Peter’s story? Cannot wait.

So, if you’re into this series, or the stars, or just wanna get your inner Fashion Police on, there’s a way to check out the red carpet premier of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. A’yup. Yahoo will be streaming the red carpet live, and will bring viewers the after-party concert on the 29th. Pharrell Williams, Alicia Keys, and the soundtrack guru Hans Zimmer (you know the Miami Vice theme is an earworm. Admit it.) – should be a mighty fine bit of ear candy.

But inquiring minds wanna know; will Pharrell’s hat be there?

Wear a sweater for public media! And also, Mr.Rogers.

Had to share this.  Who doesn’t love Mr. Rogers?  And also sweaters.  It’s an easy — and free! — way to support public media, something we all love.  Hey, without PBS we here in the USA wouldn’t have enjoyed Dr. Who, Benny Hill, and Red Dwarf ’til BBCA hit our shores.  That’s decades of Who-less TV y’all.  There would have been no Mr. Rogers, no Big Bird, and no Easy Reader from the Electric Company (and fewer opportunities to listen to Morgan Freeman is a horrible idea to contemplate.)  Not to mention our love affairs with Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife.

So snap yourself a sweater selfie, and upload that puppy.  Do it for your favorite Neighbor. Read on for the full deets! Continue reading
