Goodreads Review – “Red, White, & Royal Blue”

Yeah, sometimes I’ll just rip a review straight off of what I wrote over at Goodreads. It happens. From my Goodreads account:

Wow. How to put into words all of my feelings about this book? It’s exactly what I needed, what I wanted, and what I had to read right now, while I’m stuck in pandemic lockdown. A beautiful story that’s sweet, hot, funny, and feels real. Yes, it’s an alternate history fairytale. But damn if it doesn’t make me feel fantastic, with believable dialogue, complicated characters, and true love. I need three so much more from this author! I hope she gets on that real soon. Need to feel good? Read this book. You won’t be sorry.
And more thoughts:

Yeah, so this story is pure liberal wish fulfillment, but I’m 110% okay with that. A boy loves a boy, a their story about getting there is a wonderful enemies-to-lovers romance that fits perfectly into the contemporary romance genre. I’m still riding high on the happiness I felt while getting to know these characters. I’m damn impressed with this one y’all.

Readers wondering about the sexytimes in this book? Yeah I know you are. Well, as this is contemporary romance rather than erotica, the focus is on emotions and plot. Yeah there’s steam, and there’s no shying away from the love these two guys share…but it’s not a prostate exam, if you know what I mean (and I think you do.) McQuiston knows how to turn the spice up like a Goldilox; for a fun fairy tale read, it’s just right.

There’s lots of fun peeks at DC and Austin, Texas, as well as a living-the-dream feel of hanging out with impossibly cool (but sweetly grounded) millennials that form bonds of friendship (and more) that definitely has a #lifegoals vibe. Dive in…but maybe grab some Skittles and barbecue, champagne, and a few scones first. You’re gonna want to go all in on the wacky and wonderful world of this story.
