From Geek for e: Broken City

As always, clicky on the title for the original piece!

Movie Review: Broken City

Allen Hughes (Menace II Society) shows that he can do the gritty city thriller here in the 21st Century with Broken City.  Meanwhile, Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones have a grand old time getting into their characters and playing the ol’ double/triple cross.  It’s a fun film that isn’t tough to follow — a nice bit of work that, considering all the maneuvering these characters get into — but delivers a fast-paced look at corruption and the lengths people will go to cover their tracks.

Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) is an ex-cop that quit the NYPD under less-than-perfect circumstances.  Seven years later he’s a PI that’s trying to make ends meet, when he gets a call from NYC Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe).  Who happens to be the former police chief, don’cha know.  Seems the Mayor wants Taggart to see who the Mayor’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is sleeping with, other than the Mayor.  Taggart obliges, but is it about adultery, or is the Mayor after something else?

Why I should have an iPhone, part #6784: iPoe

iPoe_onesheet

I love my Droid.  It’s fun, it allows me to “work” on the fly, and hey; I can even talk to people on the phone-thingy!  But sometimes I wish I stepped up my game and grabbed an iPhone.  Today is one of those days.  Why?  iPoe.  Yeah, you read that right; iTunes has an app that lets you have “an interactive experience” with Edgar Allan Poe.  Now, I’m sure that doesn’t mean you actually get to interact with him, unless all that stuff Kirkman has been writing for the past few years is actually true (Braaaaains!)  But still, groovy idea.  Check out the official Web site to see more stuff, because apparently there’s a whole lotta Poe goin’ on with iPoe and iPoe 2.  As is just and right.

I just wish they’d had this kinda stuff when I was in high school.  Oh, who am I kidding?  I would have read the original stuff either way.

Good news though, as the developers of iPoe are considering an Android app in the future.  Fingers crossed y’all!

From Geek for e: Free Screening for Bullet to the Head

Figured I’d share the freebies. As always, clicky for the original article!

Free Screening Passes: Bullet to the Head, January 28th

Gotta say I loved when Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger hit the stage at the Golden Globes.  Their “no, YOU speak English worse than I do!” skit was just adorable.  And just about right….

But you can judge for yourself, at least where Sly is concerned; we’ve got screening passes for his latest, Bullet to the Head.  It also stars Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) and Christian Slater, and is directed by Walter Hill (48 Hrs, Last Man Standing)

From IMDb:

After watching their respective partners die, a cop and a hitman form an alliance in order to bring down their common enemy.

There are 80 tickets available; each person will be allowed to download two tickets to this screening.  Nice, right?  I think so.

More images from Movie 43

If there’s one inappropriate-as-hell movie I’m going to see this year, it’s gonna be Movie 43.  The cast is huge, with tons of surprising stars (Richard Gere, Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry) taking part in this lowbrow free-for-all.  Check out the trailer if you don’t believe me.

So, in the interest of sharing the surely off-kilter love, here are more images that the studio just released, along with a few others I didn’t get to post earlier.

Movie 43 is scheduled to hit your town January 25, 2013.  Get ready, y’all.

Beer pong. Golf cart parkour. Buffalo roaming the streets of suburbia. Looks like it’s time for the 21 and Over trailer y’all!

Pictures from the film were released earlier this year, but now you get to take a peek at everyone movin’ and shakin’. And yes, this is most definitely The Hangover for the fake-ID crowd. Take a peek and lemme know what you think!

21 and Over is scheduled for a March 1, 2013 release date.

Not much to say here.  Why?  Because it’s a trailer and who’s reading my thoughts? But I will share some deets from the press release, including how to get in on Chang’s big party….

21 and Over stars @MilesTeller, @JustinChon, @SkylarAstin, Sarah Wright, Francois Chau, Jonathan Keltz, Daniel Booko, Dustin Ybarra

Synopsis: Straight-A college student Jeff Chang has always done what’s expected of him. But when his two best friends Casey and Miller surprise him with a visit for his 21st birthday, he decides to do the unexpected for a change, even though his critical medical school interview is early the next morning. Wreck-It Ralph photo. (PRNewsFoto/Entertainment News Line)

So, the Academy Award nominations were announced last week, and there are plenty of surprises along with the sure things. But I do love me the Animated Feature and Animated Short categories (though my true loves are the makeup and special effects categories).  For folks like me who want the animated nominee info rightthisminute, here are the nominees:

Animated Feature Film

* Brave
* Frankenweenie
* ParaNorman
* The Pirates!  Band of Misfits
* Wreck-It Ralph

Short Film, Animated

* Adam and Dog
* Fresh Guacamole
* Head over Heels
* Maggie Simpson in “The Longest Daycare”
* Paperman

Entertainment News Line sat down with Wreck-It Ralph artist/filmmaker Shannon McGee and the result is an interview that shines a light on the making of an animated film.  It’s an interesting look at the process, from an artist that’s hip-deep in awesome.

The press release — with the full interview — after the jump!

Movie Review: Zero Dark Thirty

ZeroDarkThirty

When we all heard the news that terrorist/founder of al-Qaeda Osama bin Laden was killed, almost ten years after the 9/11 attacks, some asked “Wasn’t that yesterday’s news?” No, not really. For some it was a hunt that cost them over a decade…. Or in some cases, their lives. With Zero Dark Thirty, we get an up-close, inside look at what it took to bring down one of the most wanted terrorists of our lifetime. Raw, unflinching and totally cathartic, Zero Dark Thirty is not only a must-see movie for Americans, but for anyone who wants to know what happened in those ten years. Plus, it’s an amazingly well acted, well crafted film.

First off, this ain’t your mommy’s Homeland. Yes, that’s a great show (and I’m not ashamed to admit I’m completely addicted), but instead of being amped up as the credits roll, you’ll more likely be exhausted and wrung out from this experience.  That’s an incredible achievement. Like her movie The Hurt Locker, Director Kathryn Bigelow gives moviegoers the immersion experience, and leaves you feeling like you’ve lived the entire hunt along with those key players. Zero Dark Thirty is gritty, tiring and sometimes feels hopeless. You feel for the unknown agents and officers who died during this manhunt. And you see that trying to bring down the Bad Guy isn’t all badass tough guy posing, but heartbreaking work and decisions that could get you and/or your co-workers killed. Think about that the next time you bitch about a staff meeting.

So let’s get into the nitty-gritty. Yes, there are shocking scenes of torture…er, interrogation. Scenes so realistic my heart lept into my throat. Bigelow came under fire for an alleged “pro torture stance” in the film but anyone watching Zero Dark Thirty can hardly claim that those scenes are glorified. In fact, the disgust and horror some of the characters feel about their tactics comes across loud and clear. (There are also some grumbles by other characters when those tactics are censured, but I can only assume that’s from a place of historical truth and not Bigelow’s bias.) There are also allegations of partisanship (a topic that Georgetown University’s Bruce Hoffman discusses in his brilliant HufPo commentary), as well as the ever-popular “how’d they get that info?” dance that circles so many films involving American intelligence/armed forces.

Bigelow knows how to give an audience a realistic experience, and in this film there are many ways she nails it. Night Vision filters during the final scenes make it edge of your seat stuff. But what will suck you in instantly is Bigelow’s use of a real 9/11 call from a woman trapped in one of the buildings as the opening scene. It’s heartbreaking, and with the screen completely black, it’s impossible not to focus on the caller’s words.

The plot of Zero Dark Thirty keeps the adrenaline from that galvanizing opening and keeps viewers glued to the screen. Forget popcorn, because this movie pulls you in so completely you’ll forget you bought some. And though Jessica Chastain got an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of CIA operative Maya in Zero Dark Thirty (justifiably so), the film feels like an ensemble piece, with everyone giving their all. Oh, and one thing. FUCK YEAH JOHN BARROWMAN! He only has one or two lines in the film, but as a muckety-muck at the CIA the Torchwood star looks so butch! fantastic.

Other actors you’ll notice are James Gandolfini as a weary, believable Director of the CIA, Joel Edgerton (Warrior) and Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) as Special Forces operatives, Friday Night Lights Coach Taylor-for-life Kyle Chandler as CIA Station Chief Joseph Bradley, and the wonderful Jennifer Ehle from 2005’s penultimate Pride and Prejudice (wet t-shirt Mr. Darcy!) as a CIA operative that works with Maya.

With the Academy Award nominations announced for the year, it’s officially awards season. Make sure you catch Zero Dark Thirty; this will be one of the films everyone’s talking about. And you don’t want to be that person left behind in the office’s Oscar poll.

Trailerwatch: The Last Exorcism…Part 2?

The Last Exorcism Part 2 - promo shot

Yeah, it sounds a bit like an oxymoron.  But the original The Last Exorcism was actually a fun, creepy-good time.  And now the trailer for it’s sequel — with Ashley Bell reprising her role as the poor unfortunate possess-ee — has come to town.

Here’s the info from CBS Films:

Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found terrified and alone in rural Louisiana. Back in the relative safety of New Orleans, Nell realizes that she can’t remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family. Just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean her last exorcism was just the beginning.

Even just with the trailer to go on, it looks like this will be head and shoulders better than The Exorcist 2: The Heretic.  Then again, that’s not a hard thing to accomplish, so this new film should have a relatively easy time of it.

The Last Exorcism Part 2 is slated for a March 1, 2013 release.
