Ravens Superbowl Celebration Day 1: Baltimore Spotify playlist

Hooray for sports!  Yay team players who do the sport thing!  Go Ravens! Whee!

As you may expect, I’m not what you’d call a die-hard sports fan.  But I do get excited about games if someone else is watching with me.  However, I also have a phobia about watching games where teams I like are playing.  I figure I’ll jinx the thang if I watch.  So this Sunday, I won’t be watching the Superbowl.  Because I want my Baltimore Ravens to win.  C’mon; a football team that’s based on an Edgar Allan Poe poem?  Done and done y’all.

So, to honor the purple folk, I’m posting a thang-a-day ’til the Superbowl.  All things Raven and/or Baltimore.

First up?  I’ve put together a little Spotify playlist.  It’s titled Ravens Superbowl Celebration, and it’s a mashup of many different genres, from country to R&B, rap to (of course) Zappa.

Yay Ravens!  Go forth and do something good with that football! Yaaaaay sports!

Missed some Best Picture noms? Not if AMC can help it.

bps-2013-header

This could be the year that YOU rock the Oscar pool.  AMC Theaters is hosting their 7th annual Best Picture Showcase, where you can catch up on the Oscar nominated films that you may have missed, or just wanna see again.

AMC Owings Mills 17 is the only Baltimore-area theater participating, but there’s also Rio Cinemas 18 in Gaithersburg if you don’t mind a drive (it’s one of my favorite theaters, from when I lived closer to DC.)  Or you can go crazy and do the 24-hour filmfest weekend marathon thang down at the AMC Georgetown 14.

Do I wish that AMC White Marsh was hosting this year?  Darn tootin’.  But this is a great way to catch up on the current crop of nominees.  And I myself wouldn’t mind catching Lincoln again.  Okay fine; I haven’t been able to get out to see Argo or Silver Linings Playbook yet, and that must definitely be remedied.

Check out the AMC Best Picture Showcase Web site for more info, and to purchase tickets/passes.

From Sleeping Hedgehog — Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

As always, clicky on the hyperlinked title for the original piece!

hansel_n_gretel_witchhuntersNot to be confused with David DeCoteau’s obvious rip-off Hansel & Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft, stoner comedy Hansel & Gretel Get Baked, or The Asylum’s direct-to-DVD “mockbuster” Hansel & Gretel, all of which also came out this year.  But then again, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has been around for awhile; it was slated for release early in 2012, but got pushed to this year for reasons that were never made clear.  Was the delay worth it?  If you’re hoping for a silly-fun time with cool stuff that goes splat, then yes indeedy.  Think of the movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and add in a bit of self-aware laughs, and you’ll hit the nail on the head.

I felt like a git asking where the screening for this movie was in the multiplex.  Because let’s face it, it’s a silly title.  Each time I hear that title, I think it’s really gonna be a  Monty Python Flying Circus or Robot Chicken episode.  But honestly, this ain’t Shakespeare we’re talkin’ about.  Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is a movie that’s meant to be enjoyed after a few beers or some low-quality grog.  Or better, since it was filmed in Germany, a couple belts of Jägermeister…if you can pry it away from the neighborhood frat boys.  (Ahh, the idea that here in the USA Jägermeister is considered a drink and not a digestif.  My Grossie always found that amusing.)

Why am I pushing the booze?  Not because I’m a sucker for a nice lager — though that does happen to be true — but because any moviegoer paying even the slightest bit of attention will know what’s coming at him a mile away.  As children, Hansel and Gretel were taken out to the woods by their father, and left there.  Why was that, exactly?  That’s part of the mystery of the film, if you can call “when will those two siblings figure this out?” a mystery.  (Note: as you might expect, this film takes a whole lotta liberties with the original Brothers Grimm telling of this tale.)  How the two witch hunters could spend so long fighting bad ol’ witchypoos without solving the raison d’être for their life’s work is kind of a stumper.

Two new software products for filmmakers

KoalaChimpanzee

Logos: Jungle Software

Final Cut Pro.  Illusion.  AfterEffects.  There are tons of software programs out there for professional filmmakers.  And most of these programs I couldn’t figure out if my life depended on it, though they sound really cool.  And I really appreciate their being around, especially when I’m watching an effects-laden fantasy or horror film.

Now there’s two new things filmmakers can play around with; Chimpanzee and Koala.

* Chimpanzee Powerfully Simple Production™ — a software program that helps keep track of production

* Koala Call Sheets™ — a program that produces documents that tells everyone where and when to be at work for any given day (or days)

Okay, so I’m predisposed to like ’em just because they have cool names.  But in all honesty?  I share ’em just in case there’s an aspiring filmmaker out there looking for what to use, and how to use it.  Plus, I saw this release and couldn’t resist sharing, as it gives a peek into the creative process that is seldom talked about in the news.

If I had a video-camera and some software I’d…oh, who am I kidding.  I’m best leaving that stuff to y’all.

GI Joe: Retaliation sneak preview

GIJoe_Retaliation

Looks like folks headed to Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will be getting a little more slam-bang for their buck.  A 4 minute advance preview of GI Joe: Retaliation will be playing before each showing, and will “run throughout “HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTER’S” theatrical engagement.”

If the GI Joe: Retaliation preview is anywhere near as good as the 9 minute preview of Star Trek Into Darkness that’s showing before IMAX showings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, this new preview should be pretty cool indeed.  But then with all the ac-TOR films I’ve seen (and enjoyed) lately, I’m really ready for a bit of the ol’ biff-boom-pow.

From the press release:

HOLLYWOOD, CA (January 23, 2013) – Paramount Pictures, MGM and Skydance Productions, in association with Hasbro, will release a 4-minute preview of the highly anticipated “G.I. JOE: RETALIATION” in IMAX 3D, RealD 3D and digital 3D theaters in advance of Paramount and MGM’s “HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS.”

In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra, they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.  The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Ray Stevenson, Elodie Yung, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson.  Directed by Jon M. Chu, and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner of Hasbro, from a screenplay by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe® characters.

“G.I. JOE: RETALIATION” is in theaters everywhere March 29th, 2013

From Geek for e: Insidious 2 Casting Call wants YOU!

As always, clicky for the original piece!

Psst: wanna be an actor? Casting call for Insidious 2, if you dare!

PHOTO: Screen Rant

I know, I know.  You’ve always known you have what it takes to make it big.  But you’ve never had the chance to show Hollywood.  Well, now you do.  And if you make an impression you just may find yourself on the big screen in this summer’s Insidious 2.

Sure, it’s only a walk-on role, but you never know where that’ll lead.  You’ve gotta start somewhere.  Just ask Suzanne Somers, who played “Blonde in T-Bird” in American Graffiti.  Or Kevin Spacey, who played “Subway Thief” in Heartburn.  Why just think of it; before too long you could join the list of stars who are trying to forget that no-name role that started the wheels turning!  At the very least, you’re sure to meet stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins, who are reprising their roles as Josh, Renai and Dalton Lambert.

From the Insidious 2 Web site:

Think you can make it in The Further? Show us! Enter a video submission that shows us why you should be considered for a walk-on role in the film. You can act out a scene, dress up as your favorite character, or just tell us why you love the movie. The winner will be selected based on originality and relevance to the film so get creative and good luck!

So, famous-person-to-be, what are you waiting for?

Baltimore Comic-Con 2013 updates!

BaltimoreComicCon_logo_nodate

Okay, it’s now 2013. You know what that means. Time to start planning for this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con! Or as I like to call it, the Comic-Con that’s still about Comics.

Looks like there are several returning guests to this year’s Con, including J.M. DeMatteis (JLA Classified), Keith Giffen (Threshold) and Kevin Maguire (World’s Finest).  They’re joining Frank Cho (Avengers vs. X-Men), Terry Moore (Rachel Rising), Barry Kitson (Amazing Spider Man), Amanda Conner (Vampirella) and Brian Bolland (Batman: The Killing Joke).

I’m especially excited to meet Terry Moore, as I’ve been a huge fan of Rachel Rising since the launch of the series last year.  Though I’m hoping fellow Ghastly Award nominees like Steve Niles, David Lapham and Rafael Albuquerque also make the scene….

This year’s Con will be September 7 & 8, 2013. So basically you’ve got about 8 months to plan that awesome

TrailerWatch: Olympus Has Fallen

Olympus-Has-Fallen_poster
Gotta love it when Morgan Freeman channels his bad shut-yo’-mouth Easy Reader persona on the Big Bad.  He gets down in this trailer for Olympus Has Fallen, which kind of reminds me of the slam-bang action of Independence Day, but with terrorists rather than IBM-compatible space aliens.  (I still love ID4 though, I ain’t hatin’.)

Plus, there’s Angela Bassett, and Gerard Butler as the lead asskicker-in-charge. So basically it’s gonna be throwdown central in this movie’s Washington, D.C. I’m looking forward to it.

Here’s the info from IMDb:

A former Secret Service agent works to prevent a terrorist attack on the White House.

Olympus Has Fallen stars Gerard Butler, Angela Bassett, Morgan Freeman and Robert Forster, and is scheduled to open March 22, 2013.

Open the gates of Hell!

A Million for Metropolis

Metropolis_German

Over a million bucks for a German Metropolis poster?

That’s a lot of cash for a movie poster.  But this astronomical bid was for a group of several posters, including an original 1932 King Kong poster, and an Invisible Man “one-sheet” (a one-page advertisement from a movie studio that announces or summarizes a particular product).  NOW that’s starting to make some sense.  If I had that kind of dough I’d probably buy the thing myself. But let’s not talk about my priorities right now.Read on for the full press release!
