#31in31 – “Monster Man”

“I’ve been waiting my whole life to fuck up like this.”

Story: Adam is heading to the wedding of his big crush, Betty-Ann. When his former friend Harley literally surprises him on the trip, things get dangerous. Who knew constantly insulting people for being “stupid rednecks” would have consequences? Um. Everybody. Everybody but these two.

Scares: Stupid, not scary.
Splat Factor:  A gas station bathroom that puts Trainspotting to shame. Fake dead animals used to simulate cunnilingus. (Yes really.)

Subgenre: Bad Dudebro Horror
Year Released: 2025
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Too stupid to be anything but original.

Trick or Treat?: Dumb and Dumber meets Duel in the worst possible way. Man is a complete waste of time, if you’re looking for a spooky October watch.

That’s all I really need to say, but as my 2025 reviews need to be at least 400 words to count toward my quota? I’ll continue. But feel free to just stop reading at this point, and watch something like The Hitcher – or Duel – instead.

This film wastes a cool poster and a truly kickass monster car/truck/thing on a story focused on two of the least interesting characters I’ve seen in a while. Not a redeeming, interesting, or funny thing between the two of them. They literally have an “am not”/”are too” slap fight. That’s a perfect encapsulation of the character development in this film.

The duo meet Sarah, an incredibly gorgeous girl on their travels, which leads to one of the most uncomfortable, boner killer sex scenes I’ve ever had the displeasure to watch. Star Wars quotes? Stupid, that was.

Add in middle school sex humor, really bad “country” accents, and a lead actor that looks embarrassed to be there (fair), and this is 98 minutes I’ll never get back. At least the low budget bloody FX is kinda fun. But the situational humor sucks all the enjoyment out of anything here.

Writer/director Michael Davis is from Rockville, Maryland, which is close to my ol’ hometown. Which makes sense, as the two leads here feel like clueless Montgomery County idiots. Oh look. Somebody waiting for the pay phone is missing an arm. Spooky! JFC is Davis 8?

That these two survive is the most disappointing thing in the whole film. Surprise, I spoiled it for you. Now you don’t have to watch. Trust me, you dodged a bullet.

There. That’s just over 400 words. I’m out.

Score: 0.5 out of 5 pumpkins. Half a star for the sheer gumption that it took to make this thing.
