#31in31 – “Do Not Enter”

“What could go wrong?” [#BlessTheirHearts]

Story: Ricky, Diane, Cora and Vern are a group of friends who love crawling; discovering unknown urban areas. And documenting it for social media, of course. They don’t even great numbers, though. So when Diane suggests breaking into the old Paragon Hotel, a site that has been abandoned since the 80s because spooky. I’m sure they’ll be fine.

Scares: A few jumps, but nothing interesting.
Splat Factor: Rather dry deaths. Most of the blood shown looks black, thanks to the dark environment.

Subgenre: Good Book, Meh Film
Year Released: 2026
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Based on the Stoker Award nominated book “Creepers”, by David Morrell. Yep, the guy that wrote “First Blood”, bringing Rambo into the world.

Trick or Treat?: Enter isn’t bad, it isn’t good, it simply exists. You can actually feel the time slipping by you as this hollow “horror” plays out. Not a bad film to put on when you’re looking for background while you’re doing something else. Watching this with total focus will have you noticing the dragging plot and middling performances. But hey, the black guy lives! That’s pretty sweet.

I was shocked when I realized David Morrell wrote the story this is based on. I love his stuff, from the Abelard Sanction action series to every single horror short story of his I’ve ever gotten my hands on. I see his name? I settle in. But here, the plot is disjointed, and the story feels like a “one from column A, one from colum B” boilerplate. As I haven’t read the book – yet – I’m assuming the fault here lies with the writer and director.

It’s a slow walk of tropes here; an unsuccessful but eager group of crawlers,a Big Spooky Place, and various found footage-adjacent beats we’ve all seen before as the group becomes separated and stumbles aro trying to figure out how to leave. Bonus? Frank, a dude from Vice News (wink), joins to cover their attempt.

Naturally, a competing trio surprise Our Gang; a token bitter ex-member, a
requisite psycho who’ll do anything for money, and Amp The Body Count Guy. They get got as per the rules, but their deaths are rather bloodless. Kills are either not shown on screen, or shot in such a way as to avoid showing any actual gore. I say this even though one of the dudes has his heart ripped out.

The setting looks like an actual abandoned hotel, which was probably the case with this lower budget film. There’s a huge tree growing in the center of the hotel, which is pretty cool. Cameras and phones hang from it, lending easy exposition for Our Gang to stumble upon. Dunno about the weird hooded statues and totem-esque carvings; as with the “ancient tome” written in modern English? I guess they’re easy ways for the film to telegraph how totally weird it is around here you guyyyys.

The monster is a mix of Pan’s Labirinth, The Descent, and Blood Red Sky. And it’s okay. It’s fine. Just like everything else here, it’s serviceable. Maybe a bit too smooth, which reads as odd instead of creepy.

Morrell deserved a better adaptation of his work than this.

Score: 2.5 out of 5 pumpkins. Enter is the very definition of average.
