Here’s the synopsis, without giving too much away:

Off the Shelf — Godzilla: Cataclysm

cover58759-mediumNutshell: Cataclysm is old-school Kaiju meets Young Turk apocalyptic fiction.  And it totally works.  This is the kind of comic book that screams for a big-ass tablet, so you can enjoy all the full-page awesome at once.  Or, you can skip the electricity and go straight to the TPB.  Not quite as pretty as Half-Century War, but you’ll get over that quick.  Old-school or new-school, if you’re into Kaiju, get your hands on this book. Grade: A-

Story:  What happens after the monsters throw down?  When the world is left with huge chunks taken out of it, and there’s smoke, ash and debris where civilization once stood?  It’s 20 years after an epic Kaiju battle, and the world looks like a squatters camp.  Most people now think of the monsters as gods, but old-timer Hiroshi knows better.  He also thinks they haven’t left for good, but will be coming back.  Guess what?  He’s right…but how could he possibly know, or is he simply resigned to the end of the human race?

Movie Review: American Sniper

american sniper

Nutshell: I’d give American Sniper an A-.  Is there a bit of hero worship?  Sure.  But Cooper’s performance and Eastwood’s whipsmart direction keep things grounded.  Some of the most believable scenes of wartime devastation, thanks to Eastwood’s immersive style.

Gotta admit before the news about this film hit my inbox, I’d never heard of Chris Kyle.  But if a flesh-n-blood man was ever meant for a Hollywood big screen biopic, he’d have to be right up at the top of the list.  A Navy SEAL that fought in Iraq, and called the “most lethal sniper in US Military History”, Kyle signed up for the SEALS after 9/11, fought in the Iraq war, and then came home and helped war veterans suffering from PTSD.  American Sniper shows his life before, during and after his tours in Iraq, and the film is riveting.

What really stands out in Sniper is Eastwood’s ability to get viewers deep into the action.  Camera angles, sets and production design gave me a “boots on the ground” feeling whenever Kyle’s wartime exploits were shown.  I could almost taste the grit of a sandstorm, and feel the terror coming off the soldiers.  I also felt heartbroken over what Iraq has been reduced to; a rubble-strewn horror where blood, sand and naked rebar are all you can see.  Where a family that tries to stand up to terror can only expect the very worst, and even then it’s more horrible than you can imagine.  Eastwood’s unblinking eye shows filmgoers the heartbreaking terror of daily lives along with what it must have been like to be a soldier in that war torn area.

As Kyle, Bradley Cooper is nice mix of good-ol-boy and military respect and full-on SEAL bulk; he gives Kyle an intelligence and internal dynamic that rises above caricature or mimicry.  (Plus, the scene where he’s deadlifting enough iron to lay train tracks for a small country is pretty damn impressive.)  The same can be said of the actors playing members of his SEAL team.  Though they’re in and out of scenes, Jason Hall’s script gives these characters just enough exposition to let you feel for them, and the actors (especially Jake McDorman as “Biggles” and Kyle Gallner as “Goat-Winston”) bring ‘em to life easily.  My only quibble?  Sienna Miller as Chris’ wife Taya Kyle, shows the pain of waiting for her husband Stateside, but is given little to do but cry for him and bemoan her situation.  It’s not as horrible as that suggests, but it’s still too cliche for the rest of this film.

Eastwood crafted the hell out of this picture, and yet it feels effortless. I’m betting one of the reasons this film isn’t getting as much awards season love is because Eastwood makes it seem so damn easy.  While January is known as the dumping ground for lost films, it’s also a time where high-quality stuff that came out in limited release the months prior (For Your Consideration) finally get a wide opening.  American Sniper is one of those January films worth your time.

Movie Review: The Wedding Ringer

wedding ringer onesheet

Nutshell: I’d give The Wedding Ringer a B+.  Funny as hell, and surprising in the chances it takes with the usual cut-n-paste storyline and cliches. A little rushed at times, but a fun film to hit if you want stomp-the-floor laughs.  And who doesn’t?

The Hangover.  Bridesmaids.  Wedding Crashers.  There are tons of films out there where someone’s getting married/gonna get married/hitting up a wedding.  Why should you see The Wedding Ringer?  Because it’s damn funny.  Really damn funny.  I-probaby-drove-the-critic-next-to-me-crazy-with-my-hooting funny.  And I was surprised at that.  Don’t get me wrong, Josh “Olaf” Gad and Kevin “Seriously See His Stand-up” Hart are funny guys.  And everyone knows Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting can nail comic timing with her work on The Big Bang Theory, so making the leap to film should be a snap.  But let’s face it, a lot of films promise all the funny, but deliver butkus.  Or worse yet, polite/pity claps, where you feel like you should be laughing so you try to dredge up something.  Sigh.  Jack and Jill, lookin’ at you.

But The Wedding Ringer is a comedy that’s actually funny.  Not just a giggle or chuckle funny, but big-time funny.  Worth your hard earned funny.  Why?  Maybe because it takes chances with it’s material, figuring that by going there, it could tick people off, or pay off.  Then again the film’s premise is kinda risky too; a story about how a guy has absolutely zero social life, so has to rent a BFF to be his best man…and a bunch of other guys to be groomsmen.  A pretty sharp observation for today’s too busy to connect world.  (In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if businesses like the one Hart’s Jimmy Callahan operates actually exist. ) Continue reading

Spy trailer looks like Bond meets Bridesmaids. Which is to say pretty cool.

spy onesheetI’m pretty tapped out with new movies right now.  Usually this time of year I take a break, gear up for the Spring/Summer blockbuster season (AGE OF ULTRON ZOMG), and catch up on all the artsy Awards Season Onslaught stuff I missed last year.  However.

Just got a message that the Spy trailer is live.  Spy, you ask?  Here’s the synopsis:

Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.

The film stars Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham, Jude Law, Miranda Hart, Morena Baccarin, Allison Janney and Nargis Fakhri.

Check out the trailer; the film hits theaters May 22, 2015.  And now I want one of those scooters with a roof.  But I have a feeling I’d pull a Susan Cooper too.

Oscars 2015: nominations announced! And indies dominate.

It’s here!  It’s here!  No, not the phone book.  This year’s crop of Academy Award nominations!  And it’s a bumper crop: Birdman, The Theory of Everything, Grand Budapest Hotel, American Sniper, Whiplash… A veritable cornucopia of really good stuff this go-round.

Snubs?  Of course.  I’m surprised Interstellar and Into the Woods didn’t get Best Picture nods, but that could mean that the Academy is focusing on biopics rather than grand epics this year.

Read on for the list of noms, check out the Academy’s Web site for a printable list of nominations… And get to planning that Oscar party!
