Movie Review — Ice Age: Continental Drift

You’d think that a movie franchise that’s on it’s fourth film would lose some of it’s steam, maybe get a little creaky in the joints.  I weep for Jason Voorhees; after all those Friday the 13th’s I’m sure even he’s sick of hacking up buxom co-eds.  But Ice Age: Continental Drift shows that not every series has to grind to a sad, achingly slow end.  With a cool premise that has more than a little bit of science behind it, new voice actors that bring a sense of eager excitement to their roles, and animation that keeps getting better and better, Ice Age: Continental Drift has restored my faith in series films.  Sorry, Jason.

It’s been awhile since Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and baby mammoth Peaches has blossomed into a beautiful teen mammoth (what?  She’s got nice hair.)  Parents Manny (voiced by Ray Romano) and Ellie (Queen Latifah) have their hands full, as Peaches (Keke Palmer, Akeelah and the Bee) tries to assert her independence and catch the eye of the teen hearthrob mammoth of her dreams (voiced by Aubrey Graham, otherwise known as singer/actor Drake) while trying not to hurt her molehog BFF Louis (Josh Gad, Love and Other Drugs).  Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Sid (John Leguizamo) has been reunited with his family, but only long enough for them to drop off pain-in-the-hindquarters Granny who’s always searching for her “Precious” (Wanda Sykes, whose voice acting helps the character steal each scene she’s in.)  Oh, and as the title of this movie says, the earth is starting to shift, big-time.  Blame prehistoric squirrel Scrat’s usual quest for his elusive acorn for that, as the usual Scrat Ice Age wrap-around story, has him traveling to the earth’s core and beyond to grab his prize.  Just a squirrel tryin’ to get a nut y’all.

I love you, Scrat. (photo: 20th Century Fox/Blue Sky Studios)

As the continent starts to push mountains closer and closer to our group, they decide to cross a land bridge to safety.  Y’know, like the land bridge that used to link Russia to North America?  Yeah, like that.  Before they can pack their trunks (see what…yeah), a split separates Manny, Sid and sabertooth Diego (Denis Leary) from everyone else, and the rest of the film is an attempt to reunite.  However, not everything is hunky-dory on the high seas; there’s a pirate iceberg full of scurvy mates, including Captain Gutt (Peter Dinklage, in fine voice), elephant seal Flynn (Nick Frost, Shaun of the Dead)  and sabertooth cat Shira (Jennifer Lopez), and they’re bound and determined to stop our heroes from getting back.  Before the credits roll there are chases, feats of derring-do, lessons learned and a glorious reunion (what?  This is a kids  movie after all, they’re not gonna leave ‘em hanging.)  Oh yeah, and there are hamster wookies!  Or at least that’s what they seemed like to me.  Since I like wookies, I’m rolling with it.

Part of the reason why the Ice Age films are so successful is the fine balance of adult humor and kiddie giggles, and this film is no different.  With a “Pirates of the Prehistoric” main storyline that keeps things lively, screenwriters Michael Berg and Jason Fuchs manage to connect the two by — gasp! — not dumbing down dialogue for the kiddies, nor throwing in raunch for the adults.  Ice Age: Continental Drift is funny simply because it gives good humor.  This is the one instance where playing to everyone really does pay off.  Funny is funny y’all.  And good is good, and here the CGI is really good.  Watching the first Ice Age after this new film, I could really see the strides made in creating this world.  Taking the time to craft animals that were actually around in those bygone days is a real treat; what little amateur paleontologist isn’t gonna love seeing Smilodon, Gigantopithecus, Palaeolagus, Procoptodon?  And the 3D is just as good; nothing like seeing Scrat’s schnozz “thisclose” while he’s sniffing out an acorn.

So yeah.  You’ve got kids?  Go take them to see Ice Age: Continental Drift.  You got a jones for more animation this Summer?  Go see Ice Age: Continental Drift, kids optional.  You’ll have more than enough fun watching this latest installment of the franchise for your own pleasure.  Here’s to more films in this series — “Ice Age: The Americas, Here We Come”, anyone?

P.S.: Pixar’s short La Luna may have a run for it’s Oscar money this year, as the Simpson’s The Longest Daycare hits screens as the pre-show for Ice Age: Continental Drift.  How many years have The Simpsons been having their misadventures?  And yet Matt Groening still manages to deliver a well-crafted, bittersweet story.

The Words, and the new world of promotion

Part of what I love about writing about movies is the access I get to their marketing campaigns.  Sure, I love free swag anytime I can get it (nothin’ but love, SDCC!), but I am fascinated by how studios get the word out.  With today’s social networking it’s even more amazing.

And example?  Sure, got one right here; the coming-soon film The Words, starring Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and Zoe Saldana.  I saw the trailer for this a few months back and was intrigued by the premise: a man steals another’s work and passes it off as his own, with results being well, what you’d expect.  Could be a watershed role for Cooper, and I’d love tos ee Wilde and Saldana get some ac-tor props as well.

This film goes beyond words with their marketing campaign, using Pinterest and Tumblr as ways to get the message of their film across.  It’s a brilliant move, one I’ll bet more films will be using as these two sites become more mainstream.

So check their Pinterest and Tumblr feeds…and also check out the trailer if you haven’t already done so.  Why here ’tis right now.

A couple things I’ve worked on lately.  As always, click for the full review!

Movie Review: Ted

There are movies that you know are gonna be fantastic.  Then there are movies that you hope will be fantastic, but you have a sneaking suspicion Hollywood could really screw the pooch on this movie with little to no effort.  I was definitely in the latter camp with Ted, but fortunately it’s a good-time film that will make Seth MacFarlane fans very happy and leave everyone else in the theater with a ton of off-color laughs.  Does it kinda feel like a two hour live version of tv’s Family Guy?  Well, yeah.  But we’re talking about the story of a living, toking (no, I didn’t mean talking, though he does that too) teddy bear here, so that’s not a bad thing.

Picture this: a beautiful Christmas Day in Boston.  Snow on the ground, kids bundled up tight against the cold, Patrick Stewart’s soothing Shakespearean voice narrating the festivities.  And a little boy wishing on a Christmas star that his beloved teddy bear could be his living, breathing best friend forever.  Ahh, Currier & Ives, right?  Uh, back it up a sec.  This is, after all, Seth MacFarlane’s Boston, so you know something’s coming.  Sure enough, before you can say “isn’t that sweet?”, there’s a flurry of crude, made all the funnier by Stewart’s deadpan delivery.  The crude, unapologetic humor only snowballs — taking a winter motif and running with it y’all — from there.  As the years go by, little John Bennett and his pal Ted go from sweet playtime buddies to beer-n-bong bros.  Cut to present day, and John’s girlfriend of 4 years wants John to grow up and not spend so much time (getting stoned) with Ted.  Let’s see how far that gets her.

Bairns, bodhrans and brogues…. Doesn’t everyone want to be in Scotland?  Disney/Pixar is really hoping you do, with the release of their newest animated feature, Brave.  I liked it.  But I really, really wanted to love it.  So that’s where the empty little hole in my soul is coming from.  Though it is good to see that archery is the new black this season, with Brave taking up the bow & quiver alongside Katniss from The Hunger Games and Hannah’s…Hannah.  Why before you know it, we’ll even get the vote!

Princess Merida is an adorable little thing.  She’s the apple of her father the King’s eye, but she doesn’t exactly do what her mother the Queen would like.  And by that I mean Merida does the opposite, railing against the inhumanity of it all.  So when Merida is “of marrying age” (as always with Disney, it’s somewhere between the first blush of puberty and 18), she’s not too happy about being fixed up with some kid guy she doesn’t know.  So she decides to take matters into her own hands, and as you’d expect this lands her in situations that she never expected.

News-a-palooza!

A quick bit of news & press releases I’ve popped up elsewhere.  As always, clicky for the full article!

Total Recall lets you “Rekall”

When Ah-nold said “I’ll be back”, he probably didn’t realize his movies would be coming back too.  So far the first go at re-doing his oeuvre hasn’t exactly been a genre classic (Conan?  Single-handedly flushed Jason Momoa’s breakout chances down the loo.  Pity.)

But things are looking up with the new spin on Total Recall; the trailer looks like they’re getting it right this time.  Plus, having tried-and-true big screen actors like Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Bryan Cranston doesn’t hurt.

Wanna get in on the Recall action?  Well, there may not be an app for that (yet), but there’s definitely a game you can check out….

Jim Starlin comes to Baltimore Comic-Con

Yet another biggie in the comics world is headed to Baltimore this September. Did you love the ending of The Avengers? Yeah, me too. So getting to chat with the creator of the next Big Bad? Niiiiiice.

Read on, fellow fans.  Read on….

Angelina Jolie is feeling evil as Malificent

Angelina Jolie has a love for the, well, complicated ladies.  Evelyn Salt (glad to see there’s a Salt 2 in the mix), The Tourist‘s Elise, Grendel’s momma in Beowulf, and of course her Oscar-winning turn as Lisa in Girl, Interrupted.  She’s upping the evil as Sleeping Beauty’s nemesis in Malificent.

Gotta say that I was amazed and scared pantsless by this particular witchy queen.  Best evil hairdo ever?  yeah, you better believe it.  Plus, she could transform into one badass dragon; that’s pretty top-notch.

Read on for the details!

The Nominees for the 2012 Harvey Awards

Okay comic book guys and dolls, the day is here; the Harvey Awards nominees have been announced, and it’s a great crop this year. Winners, as always, will be announced at this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con September 8th.  Need another reason to attend?  There you go.  You’re welcome.

I’m excited to see Pearls Before Swine, Mutts, get nods for Synicated Strip or Panel, Ozma of Oz (a favorite story of mine from my kiddie days) get a Best New Series nod, and the amazaing work of Drawn & Quarterly on the American edition of Onward Toward Our Noble Deaths.  And hey wait — did a United States Government publication get a Harvey Award nod?  Yep; Preventive Maintenance Monthly is so cool it almost makes me wanna sign up…almost.

I’ll leave it at that, otherwise I’ll never get on with announcing the nominees….

Celebrate your freedom from electricity: 5 books for the 4th

Are you hanging out with me over here in the DelMarVa peninsula?  Do you have power?  No, not the “Hulk SMASH!” kinda power, because I’m sure y’all are awesome, but do you have a/c, cable, a working icemaker…y’know, all the trappings of America?

No?  Well then head over to the library.  Not only does it have a/c, you can be happy to know that you’re actually enjoying your tax dollars, and there are plenty of things to leaf through while you wait for BGE/Pepco to get it’s %^*$# together.

Yes?  Well, head over to the library anyway.  These books are the perfect conversation starters for that BBQ you’re headed to, or the perfect things to get lost in when Uncle Ernie sets half the backyard on fire.  Again.

Hot off the wire: Stripping taught `Magic Mike’ cast about women

Photo: AP

SANDY COHEN Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — The waxing, the thongs, the perils of topless typecasting: Playing strippers taught the men of “Magic Mike” something about women.

Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello and Matt Bomer play firemen, cops and other exaggerated versions of hyper-masculine characters in the Steven Soderbergh film, and they say preparing for their parts and performing nearly nude for the dozens of female extras who populated the fake Club Xquisite gave them insight into women’s grooming, undergarments and approach to carnal fantasy.

5 reasons why dudes should see Magic Mike

Because let’s face it; ladies, we all know you’ve been waiting for months to get yourselves front-and-center for this one. But the straight fellas out there probably think that there’s nothing that could tempt them to head out and catch this movie, besides big-time girlfriend points. (But really, what guy wants to sit next to his girlfriend while she shrieks over some other dude’s abs?)

Herewith, a list of 5 reasons why dudes shouldn’t be afraid of a little male stripping action.

TrailerWatch: animation edition!

Mmmm, trailers. My favorite part of hitting the theaters! Okay, my second favorite thing (unless the movie I’ve headed to is a stinker, then they’re back to #1.) My latest obsessions, lemme show you them.

If you’re like me, you loved you some Monsters, Inc.  “Kitty!”  ZOMG, did Mary Gibbs nail the voice of little toddler Boo or what?  Yeah she did.  But in Monsters University, we go back in time to when Mike & Sully were in undergrad…or would that be monstergrad?  Dunno, but the trailer makes me wish it was opening this June, not not June 2013….

I loved the first ParaNorman trailer. Groovy and ghoulish, and great animation. The new one gives more of a storyline teaser, a creepy witch, and a fantastic Halloween/Friday the 13th shout-out! Luckily, we don’t have to wait long for this one, as it opens in August. But til then, enjoy!

And, because I seem to be obsessed with all things animated today — especially animated monsters — Hotel Transylvania! Because don’t you want to know where monsters go on vacay? And the idea of a hostel-hopping college kid stumbling onto this secret hideaway sound promising….

And finally, I almost left the trailer for Life of Pi out, as there are no links to the trailer on the Interwebs as of yet. (And it’s not animated.) But it was so brilliant when I saw it in theaters during the screening (I’ve forgotten exactly which screening, as they all tend to blend together after awhile) and it blew me away. So feast your eyes on an image from that trailer, and be prepared to shell out for a 3D upgrade when Life of Pi hits this November. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

Review-a-palooza: The Intouchables and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter

The latest from Geek for e…as always, click to read the full review!

Movie Review: Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter

No no, don’t turn away.  Keep reading.  This isn’t a joke.  Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter is the first film made from the wealth of historical/horror spoofs that have been hitting bookstores over the past few years (Sense and Sensibilities and Seamonsters, anyone?)  Thankfully, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter rises above it’s one-joke premise and delivers a spine-tingling rush of action that makes it a perfect summer treat.

“History prefers legends to men”, Lincoln says in voiceover as the film begins, and it’s the truth regardless of our current obsession with reality television.  We love to stare at the glorious enormity of the Lincoln Memorial, but beyond the stovepipe hat & trusty axe, what do we really know about the man?  The screenplay (and novel on which this film is based) from Seth Grahame-Smith (The Hard Times of RJ Berger) gives us a possibility.  Sure, it’s a far-out fabrication, but there’s also a love of country and a desire for the freedom of all people tucked in there that got to me.  Sure, it’s produced by Tim Burton, but it doesn’t have the wacky Burton/Depp-ness that has fallen flat of late (Dark Shadows anyone?  Anyone?)

Movie Review: The Intouchables

I look at foreign films with subtitles as I would any film in my native tongue; is it an interesting movie?  Will I be drawn in?  Reading bits at the bottom of a screen has never been a problem for me if the film is good.  So if you’re on the fence about The Intouchables (a French film that has become so popular that it’s France’s highest-grossing non-English language film) don’t worry about reading.  This film will suck you in, and before long you’ll be eagerly awaiting the next bit of text.  Like champagne — another import from France I adore — The Intouchables is a bubbly bit of fun with just the right balance of bitter and sweet.

News-a-Palooza!

A quick bit of catch-up….  As always, click to read the full article!

Trailer Watch – Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry & How To Survive A Plague

Not all films that open in the Summer are biff-boom-pow blockbusters.  Some tiptoe up to you and catch you by surprise.  Two films that I’m sure will do just that this Summer are Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, about the Chinese artist and political activist, and How To Survive A Plague, a film about AIDS survival and activism.

The trailers have hit the wonderful world of the interwebs; read on for more info on both films!

Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough To Star in Safe Haven

I’m not what you’d call a chick-chick.  But I have to admit I’ve seen my fair share of chick movies.  But I do love Josh Duhamel (he was very enjoyable in Transformers and Life As We Know It) and Julianne Hough (stop it, I liked the new Footloose!), so when I heard the director of Chocolat is putting his not-too-sappy style to a film version of Nicholas Sparks’ Safe Haven?  Gotta say I’m intrigued.

A list of 2012 horror comics from the folks at Ghastly Awards!

It’s time to hit the beach.  Or, if you’re like me, it’s time to dream about hitting the beach while Real Life swamps you and you put off sun & sand.  Again.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t dive into some great summer reads!  My latest book obsession is the Autumn series by David Moody.  I’m also flipping through Crossed: Psychopath (not for the weak-stomached, trust me).  And on the note of scary comics, wanna know what else has come out this year that you can get your paws on?  Thanks to the folks at the Ghastly Awards, knowledge is just a clicky away….

So what are you waiting for; check out this list o’ goodness!
