“Tick… Tick… BOOM”

“I’m the future of musical theater…”

Genre: Adaptations Of Autobiographical Musicals
Release Date: 2021
Where I Watched: Netflix

Story: Jonathan Larson is about to turn thirty- mazel! But he feels like a failure; his idol Stephen Sondheim had done so much more at that age. Jon’s been working on a musical for the last eight years, and now that it seems as though a workshop is on the horizon, his life starts to crumble. His girlfriend may take a job in upstate New York, his BFF gives up on theater and takes a job in advertising, and another friend is hospitalized with complications due to AIDS. 1990 is shaping up to be the year Jon has to make Big Decisions…that he doesn’t want to make.

Talky talk: I love the theater. I love Broadway. But I seldom get my seat in a seat. Why? Because I’m a little bitch? No. Because I’m a lazy little bitch. I hear great things about a show, make a mental note…and then find some way to talk myself out of taking the Amtrak/driving to DC/calling up an Uber to get to the Hippodrome. I promise to do better, but for now it is what it is, and I tend to get my fix thanks to proshots and film adaptations. Boom, of course, fits into the latter category, and it’s a prime example of how to do stage-to-screen right.

“Prisoners of the Ghostland”

Hi-fucking-YA!”

Genre: Batshit Aesthetic That’s Hollow Inside
Release Date: 2021
Where I Watched: Shudder

Story: Cool dude Hero (yes, that’s his name) is forced into finding an overlord’s niece Bernice (*eyeroll*) in a post-apocalyptic samurai/cowboy town. And by forced, I mean strapped into a leather onesie that has bombs in strategic locations (yes, there too) to keep him in check. If he doesn’t bring her back in five days? Suit goes boom. I’m sure he won’t meet any crazy people, nor will he have issues flashing back to his days of being a criminal. Now onward, to the batshit!

Ho or No? – “Love Hard”*

*[Like Die Hard…get it?]

“[Baby It’s Cold Outside] has been putting the hip in Rohypnol since 1944.”

Type of Holidayness – Hideous Road to Romance
New Holiday Spirit or Ghost of Christmas Past?: – Released 2021
Where I Watched – Netflix

Story – Natalie is sick to death of writing the same kind dating nightmare article over and over again. So why not write a piece about the “perfect” guy she just met online? Tag is perfect…except he’s not Tag. He’s Josh. Cat, meet fish?

Worth the Eggnog? – Two actors I enjoy watching; Crazy Rich Asians‘ Jimmy O. Yang, and The Final Girls‘ Nina Dobrev (fine, she was in Vampire Diaries too. Whatever.) A story that starts off really icky – even with the Love, Actually lampshading – but hits the right kind of strange, unbelievable happy holiday ending we all want from a Christmas themed romcom. I really want to hate this movie, but damn it if it didn’t punch me in the feels in the last moments. I’m kinda mad about that. Shows exactly how much of a holiday romcom simp I can be.

Interview With “The Princess Switch 3” Director Mike Rohl

What’s the holiday season without a few (or in this house, a lot) of holiday movies streaming through the halls? Thanks to director Mike Rohl, we’ve got a series on Netflix that’s filled with holiday spirit; The Princess Switch 12, and now 3. But what of the man himself? I took my extremely limited interview abilities to Zoom, and fired some questions at the seasoned pro.

“King Richard”

“That man’s crazy.”

Story: Once upon a time, a man named Richard had a lovely, intelligent wife and five lovely, intelligent daughters. But Richard had plans; he’d train his two youngest girls to become tennis pros, moving the family out of Compton and into history. And y’know what? He did just that.

Genre I’d put it in: Movie-of-the-Week Sports Biopic Elevated To Worthwhile Oscar Bait

Remake, Sequel, Based-On, or Original: Based on the lives of tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams, their family…and, of course, their dad Richard.

Gotta say: Everyone that knows me knows I suck at tennis. I long to be at least Z-grade, but? I can’t hit the ball. From crazy-talented tennis friends in high school to a boyfriend who just knew I only needed a little help…everyone who’s tried to teach me, has failed miserably. All because of me and my inability to swat. Or whatever – go sports! But even I know of the Williams sisters. I’ve been gobsmacked by their talent, and glued to my TV every time they’d perform those feats of tennis skill. Those women are at the pinnacle of their sports top names, and rightfully so. Richard tells us the story of how these girls went from regular ol’ kids to sports legends, and I was sucked in from the get-go.
