TrailerWatch – “TRAIN TO BUSAN PRESENTS: PENINSULA”

It’s been four years since the excellent Train to Busan, and if you think those zombies have taken a break…you’re in for a bloody surprise. And a bloody good time, if this trailer is any indication. If Busan was Snowpiercer with zombies, this new film is Escape From New York with, well…you dig. Synopsis!

Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances.

Peninsula carries Busan‘s story of the zombie outbreak in South Korea and introduces a new cast of characters in a new location. Director Yeon Sang-ho revisits the world of Busan and the animated Seoul Station in this action packed horror joint, and I can’t wait.

Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula is scheduled to invade theaters in America August 12th, 2020. Get ready.

Streaming News – IndieWire looks at how the problematic film “The Help” is trending, offers other films to stream

If you’re interested in watching films that are made by/star people of color, there are great films out there…and ones that may have great stars but aren’t great messages. Indiewire has interviewed critics and creators, gathering together a bunch of great films to choose from. So try a few you haven’t seen yet! Perhaps a few from the Criterion Collection, while they’re free to stream?

I’d like to add Shudder’s Horror Noire to this list; it’s a fantastic look at films that need more love, as well as the history of black horror cinema. Definitely check it out if you can. (I believe they have a 30 day free trial. Just a thought.)

From the article:

‘Perez worried that a surge in popularity for “The Help” would extend to other “racial reconciliation” films like the Sandra Bullock-starring “The Blind Side.” The writer added, “Do not watch the fucking ‘Help’ right now…literally anything but ‘The Help,’” and offered better Netflix streaming options for the current moment including three Ava DuVernay projects: The Oscar nominated documentary “13TH,” Best Picture nominee “Selma,” and Emmy winner “When They See Us.”’

Con News: Small Press Expo shutters this year, will hold virtual Ignatz Awards

With so much to learn about COVID-19, I can’t say that I’m truly shocked that SPX has decided to cancel this year’s Expo…but I am sad. It’s such an incredible weekend filled with all sorts of indie, underground, and other forms of independent comic books, so losing the chance to connect with so many incredibly talented creators (and throw my money around like glitter) is definitely a bummer.

But wait – they’re going forward with their yearly Ignatz Awards!  Yep, they’re gonna hold ’em virtually, and I can’t wait for more information on how to watch the ceremony. These awards shine a light on comics and creators that many otherwise wouldn’t hear about, so I’m so happy they’ll be sharing the ceremony with everyone.

Read on for the entire message – including resources for creators during this trying time – after the jump. And see y’all next year at SPX!!!

Elsewhere Review: Kasaugai Roasted Nuts Assortment

I’ve been inordinately lazy of late. But I have been writing stuff. Er, eating under the guise of reviewing. Boom – originally published over at The Green Man Review!

I love senbei mixes. The crunch, salty goodness. The nori (seaweed) yumminess. Those tasty flavored peanuts. That wasabi kick. But mostly, I love that there are so many different flavors, my tongue never has to worry about Fear Of Missing Out On Yummy. (FOMOOY? Sure.) This particular gathering of treats has been a favorite of mine for years, and I’m so happy to let you in on my little no-so-secret.

The first thing senbei newbies may notice are the wasabi peanuts. Those bright green peas coated with crunchy, spicy goodness. This packet goes with more crunch than spice, though there’s a brief whiff of horseradish. That goes well with this mix, as it doesn’t steal the show from the other bites.

There’s also broad beans coated in squid-flavored cracker (a mild palate cleanser that packs a pleasing squiddy aftertaste), cracker-covered peanuts that taste of bonito (dried fish flakes) and red pepper, and a more traditional shoyu-flavored cracker, filled with peanuts and sprinkled with bits of nori. Then there’s the prawn peanuts. My favorite! I want to buy big ol’ packets of these nibbles by themselves. (AND I CAN.) Something about the blend of dried prawn, crunch cracker shell, and peanuts…it’s got a delicious umami taste – and a perfect blend of salty and sweet – that I can’t get enough of.

These are made for happy hour nibbles, matched with your beverage of choice. In fact, they’d make a wonderful accompaniment to those spicy peanuts I reviewed! Or you can have some alongside a bowl of chirashi, bites of sushi, or if you want to go full-on savory, spam musubi. Yum! But best grab more than one packet. You’ll want to have some later, and at two ounces per pack, you’ll be needing more than just one packet can deliver.

TrailerWatch – “Antebellum” Janelle Monáe

“We go. Tonight.” (A quote from the movie, but also what I’m hoping to do once this film hits theaters.)

Successful author Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.

Antebellum comes to theaters August 21st.

The Take deconstructs “The Strong Black Woman Trope” – and you need to check it out

The Take does brilliant video essays that dig into the heart of film and television tropes, themes, and subtexts. I’ve loved their content for years, when they went by ScreenPrism. But this video essay is a powerful one. I’m not ashamed to say I teared up.

Creators? Let’s give black women roles where they don’t have to be strong. They can just be. Thanks.

At Home Ideas – watch parties! “John Wick”, “Xenon” & “Bucket of Blood”!

I’m loving watch parties right now! It’s a great way to connect with friends, and enjoy (or riff on) films. I got together with a few buddies for Killer Sofa last Friday, and while the movie wasn’t great (not even bad in a good way, it’s just bad), sharing the WTF misery was worth it.

So why not connect with friends tonight and queue up a flick? I’ve got three ideas for you right now…check out one or more after the jump. Have fun and be well!
