intern2015Okay folks.  Ready for some movieness?  Here’s The Intern.  In case you haven’t seen https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZU3Xban0Y6A” target=”_blank”>the adorable trailer yet, the synopsis:

Academy Award winners Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) and Anne Hathaway (“Les Misérables,” “The Devil Wears Prada”) star together in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Intern.”  Oscar-nominated and award-winning filmmaker Nancy Meyers (“It’s Complicated,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” “Private Benjamin”) is directing the dramatic comedy from her own screenplay.

In “The Intern,” De Niro stars as Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.  Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway).

Sounds like a funny, touching “we all learn from each other” film.  And also, De Niro and Hathaway!  So passes.  Who’s with me? Continue reading

“The 5th Wave” trailer shows alien apocalypse

5WV_1SHT_TSR_05.inddA movie franchise based on a crazy-popular YA trilogy of novels.  Sound familiar?  Oh yeah, Hollywood is definitely mining the Young Adult section of the bookstore right now.  And The 5th Wave is the newest book-to-film coming our way.

Based on the first novel of The 5th Wave series by Rick Yancey, this story deals with alien invasion, and its aftermath.  Very Falling Skies and The Host, and of course the required YA Love Triangle. Synopsis? Right here:

In the new film The 5th Wave, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated.  Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie (Chloë Grace Moretz) is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother.  As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope – if she can only trust him.

The trailer looks pretty impressive; this could be director J Blakeson’s breakout film. I hope so. Hey, I’m a sucker for apocalypse stories. The 5th Wave hits theaters in 2016.

“Cooties” — catch the poster and trailer!

Cooties Final Payoff onesheetEww, COOTIES!  Who doesn’t remember that from school?  Whether you had ’em, ran from ’em, or did a little of both, it’s a rite of passage.  And apparently it’s also lethal…at least to adults unlucky enough to get caught by a passel of infected kids.  Well, at least in Cooties it is.  Don’t believe me?  Check out the trailer:

Now that‘s creepy. And kinda awesome; who doesn’t love Rainn Wilson wearing a sweatband?  I think I’m now officially off chicken nuggets. (Okay, so maybe just for the next few days. Because damn they’re delicious.)

I’m looking forward to seeing this, not only because it looks like a really well done horror spoof, but because Cooties actor/producer Elijah Wood is a known horror buff. (Check out Spectrevision, his production company.  And also check out the Iranian vampire flick A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, one of the films his company helped produce.) It’ll be cool to see what he’ll deliver with this film.

Cooties comes to theaters — and hopefully not to schools — September 18th.

Holiday Horrors Krampus and A Christmas Horror Story: better watch out!

Images: Dread Central, IMDb

I put on a hoodie today.  Yeah, it was a little chilly this morning, but could it be that I was scared warm-less by the holiday horror movies coming our way?  I’m hoping for the latter y’all.  Why?  Because these film not only look interesting, they’ve got pretty decent pedigrees.

First up, Krampus.  Liked Trick ‘r Treat?  What horror fiend didn’t? Well, Krampus is brought to us by Michael Dougherty, the lovely man who gave us that chilly bit of Halloween horror.  Synopsis for this Christmas creepy?  Right here:

A boy who has a bad Christmas ends up accidentally summoning a Christmas demon to his family home.

I’m loving the casting of actors that can do serious and funny: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Conchata Ferrell, David Koechner…and the mix of humor and horror.  Brings me back to 80s slashers, when they let you relax your guard before the throwdown began. Peep the Krampus trailer while you’re at it.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Black Mass!

black mass onesheetJohnny Depp does love roles he can sink himself into.  So watching him play the notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger in Black Mass should be pretty sweet.  Seen the trailer?

Yep. Feels like a mix of Goodfellas and The Town. Not too shabby. Plus, I’m dying to see Benedict Cumberbatch go full Boston Irish. Goodness knows he’s ginger enough for the part.  (That’s a compliment, btw.)

So, ready to get some passes?  Here goes… Continue reading

The Visit: some scares but ultimately unsatisfying

the visit onesheet

Nutshell: great twist, not-so-great movie.  Grade: C

Visiting gramma and grampy.  Who doesn’t love that?  Cookies, hot chocolate, tons of love and affection…and locking yourself in your room ’til sunup.  Not what you recall growing up?  Well, that’s The Visit, and while there are tons to really like here, the whole doesn’t equal the sum of it’s few scary parts.

“People are scared of old people for no reason.”  There’s a great line, and a killer theme, with M. Night’s use of scary things like the fear of loss of control as people get older.  He even pulls out Sundown Syndrome, a real thing that definitely can be written sinister with the right touch.

However, The Visit just doesn’t seem to connect with the creepy most of the time.  There are plenty of “gotcha!” moments, and some serious scary here and there, but these are tidbits in an otherwise bland buffet. Perhaps that’s because I saw several excellent plot ideas that either drifted off, or were simply dropped.  There’s a good reason why a few are left hanging, but all-in-all the sense of cloistered dread just isn’t there.  If it was, I wouldn’t have cared about the other storylines…but as it is, they feel unfinished, rather than a moment that adds up to a satisfying whole.
