#31in31 – “Paul Dood’s Deadly Lunch Break”

“What did they teach you about revenge in your course…?”

Story: Paul Dood wants nothing more than to be famous. So when there’s a television talent competition audition nearby, he drops everything to attend. And everything happens to get in the way of his big chance. So? Payback’s a bitch…and so are astoundingly stupid coincidences.

Scares: Absolutely zero.
Splat Factor: Some, but with this sloppy-ass story? Who cares.

Subgenre: I don’t think it knows what it is. So I won’t presume.
Year Released: 2023 (Shudder US) 2021 (UK)
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Original.

Trick or Treat?: First things first; I watched Break on Shudder, so I expected a bloody good time. Instead, this film is a mashup of black comedy, revenge flicks, and absurdity that doesn’t seem to know what it’s actually going for. Did I enjoy it? Not bloody likely.

#31in31 – “Friday the 13th part 2”

“And I promise, I’ll never, ever be late again for the rest of my life. Deal?”

Story: It’s five years after the slaughter at Camp Crystal Lake, aka Camp Blood. There’s a new camp counselor training site near the old camp…what could go wrong? Hey, who’s out there?

Scares: Lots of tension, and jump scares. Plus all the murdering stuff.
Splat Factor: FX maestro Stan Winston helms this joint. So yeah. Yeah one thousand.

Subgenre: Superior Slasher Sequels
Year Released: 1981
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Part two of the ever growing F13 franchise.

Trick or Treat?: Happy Friday the 13th! Welcome to my #31in31 for the film that had me second-guessing a convertible VW Bug as my dream car, and the film that introduced Jason to the horror slasher pantheon. I can’t believe I’ve only done the first film, Jason X, and a documentary. So let’s remedy that by checking out the film that boasts one of my favorite lesser-known scream queens (what up Amy Steel) and my favorite slasher character crush, former football player/current counselor, Mark (RIP, Tom McBride.)

#31in31 – Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

“Oh my God, I’m too stoned for this.”

Story: In 1973, a group of twenty somethings are on the way to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert, when they picked up a suicidal hitchhiker. Things go from bad to really, really bad when they try to call the Sheriff. Was that a chainsaw I heard just now?

Scares: Well crafted and plentiful.
Splat Factor: This remake definitely makes up for the lack of onscreen stuff in the original. Not for the faint of heart.

Subgenre: Shockingly Good Horror Remakes
Year Released: 2003
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Remake of Tobe Hooper’s OG film of the same name.

Trick or Treat?: I have to admit that I skipped this film when it hit theaters. I figured it would be a trash fire. But as this is the 20th anniversary of this film? I decided to give it a chance, and I’m glad I did. This is a damn good film on its own, and an even better remake of a classic. The story is the same as the OG film, but the scares are amplified. Instead of the weirdness of the original, there’s a realism that makes the story more visceral, and definitely more terrifying.

#31in31 – “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines”

“Timmy’s not taking any visitors. He needs time to…adjust.”

Story: It’s 1969 y’all – Summer of Love! But in Ludlow, Maine, an old darkness rises when Bill Bateman’s son Timmy comes back in a box. But thanks to that old pet cemetery, Timmy won’t be in a box for much longer. Groovy?

Scares: Lots of creepy creepiness.
Splat Factor: Resurrected dead, soon to be and recently dead, and ripped up animals that fit into the above three categories.

Subgenre: Sometimes Dead Is Better Stories
Year Released: 2023
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: This is the prologue installment of the Pet Sematary franchise.

Trick or Treat?: Bloodlines isn’t bad, and even has a few moments that really work. The under 90 minutes runtime keeps things paced well, with no draggy moments. Plus, it’s got Pam Grier as a badass mailcarrier. What’s not to love? Well, my cold heart found a couple things that I’ll get to in a tic, but all in all? This is a fun one to watch when the lights are low, with a little nip in the air and a wind that seems to whisper from outside your warm, snug home.

#31in31 – “Ganja and Hess”/”Blood Couple”

“He’s an addict. He’s not a criminal, he’s a victim. He’s addicted to blood.”

Story: Dr. Hess Green is an anthropologist studying the ancient Myrthian tribe of Africa. But when he’s stabbed with a ceremonial dagger by his unhinged assistant? Let’s just say Hess gets a firsthand look at the tribes blood drinking practices. And right now, he’s thirsty.

Scares: Not many. This is more of an art piece than spooky-time.
Splat Factor: Red paint-esqe blood. What’s up, 1970s?

Subgenre: Blaxsploitation As Classic Horror
Year Released: 1973
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: OG. Though Spike Lee’s remake, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, may be more familiar to some.

Trick or Treat?: The whole “vampirism as addiction” cinematic trope isn’t a metaphor in Hess, it’s stated outright, and might be the first full length film to do so. This fever dream is a fascinating look at vampire life through the eyes of recently turned vamps, and a time capsule of black cinema at the height of “Blaxsploitation”.

#31in31 – “V/H/S/85”

“I’m filming everything. Do you… wanna try?”

Story: A VHS tape seems to have been a documentary filmed off TV… But five stories have been recorded over it. Oh c’mon, give it a watch. What’s the worst that can happen?

Scares: Jumps, creepy situations, shootouts, and such.
Splat Factor: YES. It’s no Dead Alive, but it’s goopy.

Subgenre: Found VHS Anthologies
Year Released: 2023
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Part of the V/H/S franchise.

Trick or Treat?: The VHS franchise can be hit or miss. (For the rest of this review, I am not using the back-slashes. For I am lazy. We know dis.) There’s the OG VHS, VHS2, and the horrifically terrible VHS Viral. I haven’t gotten to VHS99 yet. Let’s just say I wanted to watch them in their world’s chronological order, rather than me just forgetting that existed? Cool. So when 85 hit Shudder, I figured why not? I’m a sucker for horror anthologies, and this film is shiny and new. Y’know what? I think I might get to 99 now, because 85 was a blast.

#31in31 – “Riding the Bullet”

“Hey Alan! Need to a ride?”

Story: It’s 1969, the Summer Of Love, and art major Alan Parker is obsessed with death. But when his mom is hospitalized and Alan decides to hitchhike to see her? Let’s just say he’ll get an awful lot closer to the real deal…or will he?

Scares and/or Splat Factor: suggested creepiness and the main character’s freak outs. Some blood, but quickly shown and taken away.

Subgenre: Acid Trip Nostalgia Meditations
Year Released: 2004
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Based on the 2000 novella by Stephen King. Not to be confused with King’s Silver Bullet, which was a book-to-film joint as well.

Trick or Treat?: King’s meditation on life, death, good and evil, ends up a muddled mess, probably because writer/director Mick Garris paid too much homage to the novella, without allowing himself the ability to change things for the medium at hand. It’s difficult to distinguish between reality in the story, hallucinations, visions, and memories. Remember kids; there’s a difference between the art form of the novel, and of film. Bending a narrative to the will of the celluloid gods ain’t necessarily a bad thing.

The story and plot are hallucinatory, to the point of confusion. Alan has a sarcastic voice that pops up as a snarky vision of himself, whispering comments only he can hear. King plays this out well on the printed page, but it loses something in this visual media. The acid trippy Jacob’s Ladder does this much better, perhaps due to the firm delimitation between the real world and the mind trips. Which is a shame, because Garris is typically on point with King adaptations; his The Stand is a particular favorite adaptation of mine.

Still, I’m a sucker for Uncle Stevie, and add Greg Nicotero’s wonderful FX? I don’t think I’d watch this one again on my own, but as Bullet is set in October? It makes an acceptable addition to a theme night for the season. I’d sit myself down if someone else wanted to watch with me. What can I say – I’m cool like that.

Score: 2 out of 5 pumpkins.

#31in31 – “Viking Wolf” (Vikingulven)

“Holy shit – what happened to your shoulder? Do you have rabies or what?”

Story: Teenager Thale has just moved to a new town with her mom, sis, and step-dad. Things are starting to get good, with Thale being invited to her first beach party… But when that party turns into a strange, vicious attack on Thale and two other teens, leaving one girl dead? Things are gonna get weird. *howl*

Scares: Creepy hallucinations, horrific attacks.
Splat Factor: Lots of attacks equal lots of blood, people-shredding, and wrecked bodies.

Subgenre: Norse Teen Wolf Mythology
Year Released: 2022
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Original, but with Norwegian lore you may recognize.

Trick or Treat?: A blend of An American Werewolf in London and Ginger Snaps, this Norwegian howler hits all the same notes as others in the genre. But the sorrowful vibe and Norse mythology bits make it worth a watch.

#31in31 – “Bodies Bodies Bodies”

“To hurricanes! To hurricane parties!”

Story: A bunch of twenty-something friends – and a couple of newbie romantic partners – gather at their friend David’s house (fine, his dad’s pad) to wait out a hurricane together. But when an innocent party game goes from bitchy to deadly? Time to suss out who’s playing for keeps.

Scares: lots of lights-out and old dark house suspense.
Splat Factor: the bodies (bodies bodies) are effectively goopy, but the red is…tasteful? Not in-your-face but easily seen nonetheless? Yeah. That.

Subgenre: Those Krazy Kidz Dark House Horror
Year Released: 2023
Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Based on the party game game “Body Body”.

Trick or Treat?: This had been on my radar for quite some time now. But when it was in theaters earlier in the year? I forgot. I do that sometimes. So, now that it’s streaming, I went for a month of Paramount+ and dug in. And Bodies is an interesting blend of horror, thriller, satire, and critique. It can poke fun at Gen-Z while still making fun of the insults that are often thrown their way in various forms of media. Me? My old tuchas is Gen-X, so this slacker ain’t calling any younger generation anything but beautifully amazing. The Z’ers in Bodies are decent representatives of their generation; they show amazing depth even when they’re doing really, really stupid shit. Sound familiar? Yeah, that’d be all the rest of us doing the same kinda thing. What up, newbies? Grab your own personal shame beanie and join the circle.
