GOJIRA! New poster shows one colossal kaiju

Posters for the summer/pre-summer blockbusters are coming at us at light speed. Some are meh, but others are awesome. Like this one for Godzilla, which debuted on Yahoo! Movies.

If you think he’s looking particularly huge, you’re not wrong. In fact, there’s a chart that shows everything is bigger in Texas as the years roll on for our favorite fire breathing radioactive lizard.

So waddaya think? Are you ready to plunk down your hard-earned? I’m a sucker for kaiju – yes, I’ll admit I’ve watched Ferris Bueller’s Godzilla the 1998 remake without having to lose a bet first.

Oceana Announces $3 Million Grant from Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation

LeoFoundation_Oceana

Two of my nerd obsessions have merged; movie fannishness and marine biology.  Hello!  The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has given a $3 million dollar grant to Oceana, a non-profit advocacy organization that, well, helps protect our oceans.  (To put it exactly, they are “the largest international organization devoted solely to ocean conservation”.) Nice, right?

So ladies that are crushing on Leo, you’ve been given one more reason. Crush away.

Read on for the full press release!

The first Guardians of the Galaxy poster ooga-chakas into our hearts.

image

Clicky for it’s full-res glory!

Because really, once you heard Hooked on a Feeling (Ooga-chaka Mix) in the trailer, how can you not hear it every time you see Rocket? I know it’s not just me. (Check the trailer below if you haven’t seen it yet. Don’t worry if you re-watch it about 20 times. I did.)

I’m really loving the spin they’re putting on this series. Too much Dire Serious Stuff can become overwhelming. So I can’t wait to see dire serious stuff and tongue-in-cheek. With James Gunn at the helm, I’m sure it’ll be a blast. Get it; Rocket, blast….

But anyway, here’s the first GotG poster! You’re welcome.

Why you need to go to Katsucon

This past weekend was Katsucon, the yearly anime convention in the DC area. I missed the past few years, but I headed back this time, and not just because Katsucon Gazebo owns my soul. (Though that’s definitely a part of it. /ConJoke)

There’s tons of reasons why spending a ton of money for your badge and parking/hotel rooms is a good thing. Mostly? You get to spend Valentine’s Day weekend surrounded by other fannish folks. Dancing, chatting, even arguing; it’s a heckuva lot more fun when you’re with Your People.

Then there’s the Cosplay. AKA “dressing in costume”, it becomes more than that at an anime convention. Yes, Comic-Con does too, but while that’s fun and I’ve done it…anime cosplay is not only a chance to show your mad creative skillz, but a way to bond with others. It’s…well, it’s awesome, and you’ve gotta see it (or do it yourself) to understand. Here’s a few of my favorites from this year’s con….

In Queue Review: Grabbers

image

The Story: Jeffrey from Coupling and George from Being Human are in a town where aliens have landed. These aliens don’t care for people with a high blood alcohol level. So naturally, they land off the coast of Ireland. What, Russia too cold?

Best Line: “We need more akke-hooo!”

In a nutshell: Fun, funny and exciting without being exhausting, Grabbers hits the spot if you’re searching for a funky mashup of horror, love story and comedy. It’d be a perfect ending to a late night monster movie session.

Elsewhere Review: Endless Love

Here’s Part 2 of today’s Valentine’s Day movie review-ness. Thing. Gotta say I was never a fan of the original, 1981 Endless Love.  But this film — though it’s not great by any means — is one I’d watch again, if it was on cable and someone else wanted to check it out.

As always, clicky on the hyperlink for the original piece!

Movie Review: Endless Love

There are books so amazing that people want to make them into movies.  There are movies so horrible that the books they’re based on are forever tainted by the jeers and catcalls of cinemagoers and at home bad-movie marathons.  But when an author loses the rights to any future remakes, guess what?  You get another Endless Love.  Definitely not a story about one young man’s borderline psychotic obsession with a girl and her family, this new film is all about l’amour, and how two young people fight hard to keep it.  And while it’s leaps and bounds better than the horrible train wreck that was Zefferelli’s version back in 1981, the main thing this Endless Love has going for it is that it doesn’t totally suck.

You say you’ve seen teen romance flicks before? Yeah you have.  And if you’re wondering if there’s anything different about this film, there isn’t.  It’s got the usual Harlequin storyline: boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, there is An Obstacle, there is Another Obstacle, then cue the possibility of a Happy Ending.  This Endless Love throws in the basics from the film before it (and Scott Spencer’s novel on which they’re both based), and throws out everything else.  If you’re looking for a film that’ll put you through the wringer and then give you hearts and flowers as an end-scene apology, this is just the ticket.  But as with other films based on beloved novels that have come onto the scene lately, anyone wanting to see the original story brought to life is best served by re-reading the source material.

Elsewhere Review: Winter’s Tale

Welcome to Valentine’s Day y’all!  First up, a heart-tugger that may not be the most coherent story in the world, but is definitely cranked up to 11 in the luuuuuurve department.  Guys who are being dragged to see this considering this for today, y’all have been warned.

As always, clicky the hyperlink for the original piece!

Movie Review: Winter’s Tale

The book on which this film is based is 748 pages long.  So having a film that’s over two hours isn’t that bad a thing when you’re dealing with that much source material.  Or at least it shouldn’t be.  Winter’s Tale is a fascinating fairy tale love story (heavy emphasis on the fairy tale), with a healthy dose of Good vs. Evil thrown in.  But in it’s attempt to cover that much ground, Winter’s Tale gets viewers both bogged down in minutiae and whisked ahead at a pace so breakneck that it’s difficult to keep up with what the film is trying to convey.

And there’s a lot to convey in Winter’s Tale.  That it’s a love story between streetwise thief Peter (Colin Farrell) and dying Beverly (Jessica Brown Findlay, Downton Abbey’s Lady Sybil) is only the tip of the iceberg.  There’s the neverending battle between Good and Evil (or is that Order and Chaos?), miracles, time travel, adorable kids, and a horse that is much more than just a horse.  Got all that?  Well, that’s probably because you’ve read the book.  I hadn’t, and decided to go in with a blank slate.  And I can tell you that if you’re wondering if this story will make sense to folks who haven’t read the book…well, it doesn’t.  If you’re wondering if that matters?  Well, it doesn’t.  At least not  if you’re looking for nothing more than a sweet tale in a beautiful setting.  Folks searching for cohesion or an easy-to-follow narrative are best left to search elsewhere.

Here’s the synopsis & ratings info:

Set in 79 A.D., POMPEII tells the epic story of Milo (Kit Harington), a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save his true love Cassia (Emily Browning), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant who has been unwillingly betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts in a torrent of blazing lava, Milo must fight his way out of the arena in order to save his beloved as the once magnificent Pompeii crumbles around him.
