31 in 31: The American Scream

image

“You don’t see shit like this every day.”

Story: Have friends across the pond that don’t get the American obsession with Halloween? Show em this documentary about three families in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, who really, REALLY love the holiday.

Scares: It’s a documentary, so even with walk through’s of the haunted decorations? More awesome than eerie. But be warned; there are clowns. CLOWNS. *shudder*

Splat factor: Fun FX, and tons of how it’s made. But nothing that will freak you out, because you’re seeing it from construction/creation to finish.

Closing scene “shocker”: Nup. Again with the documentary.

Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul)?: Original.

Trick or Treat?: Happy Halloween y’all! This year I decided to go with the penultimate Halloween thang, the decorations that we love to drag out. And here, those decorations are cranked up to levels that make my fairy lights and window clings look puny.

I often say that Halloween is The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, and I mean that. But with these families and their love and dedication? Wow, I feel like a poseur. I so have to step up my game! I bow to these people, for they are the masters. And they’re cool, normal folks, not weird obsessives (see: Room 237.) Bonus! Director Michael Stephenson doesn’t shy away from showing all sides of these families, including what they give up. With a little girl saying that her dad forgets about what she’d like, it broke my heart a little. It’s like he’s so focused on the kids in the neighborhood that he forgot his own.

Did you know there are Haunt Conventions, like HauntCon?  Sweet, right? That’s just one of the many things you learn watching this film. Note to self, try to get there next year, and cover it for y’all. Because I care.

The only thing I hate about The American Scream? The fact that I was in Boston – north of Fairhaven – last week and didn’t know these places existed. I could have visited! Dammit!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Score: 5 out of 5 pumpkins.

31 in 31: The Lords of Salem

image

Story: Heidi has a perfect slack-tastic life. Nighttime DJ, cute dog, nice landlady. Then she gets a creepy record sent to her. Then creepy gets all over her life. Is hell breaking loose, or is she using again?

Scares: More surreal than scary.

Splat factor: Tons of death and ooky stuff – this is a Rob Zombie joint after all – but it feels removed, distant.

Closing scene “shocker”: Not really, unless you count seeing a weird, flailing parsnip baby as shocking. Then again I’d mentally tuned out long before then. There’s end credits stuff to be had though.

Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul): An original Zombie story.

Trick or Treat?: Um. The Lords of Salem has great ideas, and mucho atmospheric mayhem. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come together very well. Not that Zombie doesn’t try. This film glows with genre star power; Dee” The Howling” Wallace, Bruce “X Men” Davidson, Sid Haig,

Here’s the good stuff. DJs dancing to Give It To Me Baby. Great getting to know you scene, with believable banter between the DJs. Zombie has a way with characters, almost as if they’re unfolding in their own time. Sherri Moon Zombie is the only white chick that can not only rock the dreads, but look good doing it.

Kind of a Rosemary’s Baby Meets The Wicker Man (the original, not the Cage version, ick) vibe, with Heidi the unknowing innocent. But I couldn’t get into it wholeheartedly. The moments of acid tripping craziness ripped me right out of the story, and before I knew it, I was checking Candy Crush. Damn that game is crack.

I know this movie could have been a modern classic. But it’s a beautiful mess that is sure to please Rob Zombie fans, but few others. I’ve heard that the companion novelization of this film explains a lot, but for me, if you need to explain your story of you’ve hiccuped somewhere down the line.

Score: 2 out of 5 pumpkins.

31 in 31: V/H/S/2

image

Story: More found-footage hijinks from the folks that gave you the original creepfest! I do not think “watch these tapes” means what they think it means….

Scares: A’plenty. And the great thing? With anthology films, the stories have to be quick & dirty. Tons of Oh Shit moments, along with the usual Don’t Do THAT bits.

Splat factor: Entrails, barfing blood, dead folks walking around. It’s not a gorefest, but it’s close.

Closing scene “shocker”: This is a horror anthology. You really think there won’t be a last minute bit of oogie-boogie?

Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul): A sequel to V/H/S.

Trick or Treat?: Yay horror anthology films! This one is a nasty little surprise that jumps out at you from the get go and doesn’t let up. Here you’ll find a guy that sees things after his corneal implant surgery, a guy that shouldn’t have taken that morning bicycle ride, aliens, and lots of bloody mayhem.

The best of the bunch is the creepy, bloody Safe Haven, directed by Gareth Evans (The Raid). A film crew interviews a cult leader at his compound. His turf? That’s a good idea. Especially when the time they’ve been waiting for has finally arrived.

The down side? Final tale, Alien Abduction, starts off promising, but ends with a whimper. That’s literal, y’all. But it’s also the only story that had me checking the time. Thankfully the other stories make up for that lapse.

Score: 4 out of 5 pumpkins.

31 in 31: It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

image

Story: The Peanuts gang is getting ready for Halloween. Everyone’s Trick or Treating (though with various levels of success). Everyone, that is, except for Linus, who is sure that the Great Pumpkin will visit his pumpkin patch, because it’s the most sincere. Sally follows Linus; will they get a look at the GP? Oh and is that the World War I flying ace up in the sky?

Scares: Zero, except for the possibility that Sally might beat the crap out of Linus when she realized she missed Trick or Treating for nothing….

Splat factor: Kiddie fare made for TV back in the 60s? Not a chance.

Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul): This goes hand in hand with A Charlie Brown Christmas & It’s Thanksgiving Charlie Brown.

Trick or Treat?: Chuck is the only one getting a rock in this fun, nostalgic look at exactly how pumped we all used to get about Halloween. Sure, now that we’re grow up (well, kinda), we love it. But there was a certain magic about Halloween that fades after you stop knocking on doors and start throwing parties.

And am I the only one who always thought that the Great Pumpkin was gonna ride in like the headless horseman? Now that’d be a story to spook the kiddies….

P. S. : The Washington Post did a “7 things you didn’t know” piece about this beloved show. Give it a peek – and then feel better that poor Chuck did get more than just rocks after all.

Score: 5 out of 5 (Great) pumpkins.

What was I thinking: The Walking Dead – Isolation

image

Photo: AMC

Stupid non-DVR cable. No pauses, no rewind, no nothing? Pah. Next time? AMC.com all the way. Because I could have watched most every scene in this ep about 9 times. Onward!

1: Just gardening. Planting the dead.

2: Fuck yeah Tyrese. I agree 100%. But you’re hurting the folks that will help…. Aaaaaaand see what you did there? Boom goes the Rick.

4: Am I the only one thinking a glorch run would be a good idea? (Definition of glorch: hand sanitizer. Because that’s the sound it makes when you squeeze/pump the bottle.)

9: Ahh, the great debate; ass whuppin vs saving lives.

* “but you know I might need to.” And I really, really want to, dad.

18: NOOOOO! *breathes* NOOOOO! DAMMIT!

21: I like men that work on cars. And use a crossbow. Just saying.

“Little Asskicker”!

24: Carl. Warden. Hershel. Badass.

25: DON’T YOU FUCKING DARE KILL CAROL. That is all. What? I’m already on thin mental ice with Glenn coughing. Don’t mess with me, Kirkman.

28: Carl’s Hat is back onscreen y’all! It’s time to get real up in here!

29: That bear trap has gotta hurt…. Oh wait. Zombie. Okay, carry on. You’re gonna drag that leg anyway.

33: This is the Tyrese Gets Hosed episode. Poor thing.

34: I do have to give props for the prison gang’s use of visitors rooms during quarantine. Smart move.

36: Carol? Aw man. I have a feeling that she’s worried about more than…. No. Nah. Nup. Amirite, people?

37: See Hershel, Maggie gets it from you.

38: Elderberries! Insert Monty Python joke here.

39: I really want to hug Hershel right now. Inspirational speech, FTW!

45: Dragged out alive? DAMMIT.

46: “Shit.” Truer words, Carol!

“Piece of cake.” Aw hell.

48: “Is that a voice?” DAMMIT! OH HOLY DAMMIT!

50: Aaaaaaand welcome to the Badass Olympics y’all. Wait. Where’s Tyrese?

51: Phew. Straight out of the comic, and just as batshit crazy.

56: TYRESE FOR THE GOLD!

57: Oh Doc. Oh Glenn. And WTF THE Hershel? Keep that kerchief…too late.

58: “You can believe somehow.” *niff*

59: Ooooh boy. I hope not, but….

Oh. Damn. Fuuuuu….

And this happens to be the episode that I played with AMC story sync. Fun!

31 in 31: Survival of the Dead

image

Story: Hey, this zombie outbreak sucks. Let’s bail on our robbing survivors blind National Guard protection detail and find ourselves an island and wait this crazy shit out! Speaking of crazy, what’s with these two families? They’re feuding like there’s tons of humans still left on the planet. Can’t they just get along? Oops, guess not.

Scares: A few, but mostly this film is a played out rehash of Romero’s better work.

Splat factor: It’s a Romero zombie flick. What do you think? Yes, that’s correct. Hello, intestines!

Closing scene “shocker”: No. But there’s a poignant, message-heavy final scene. Because, George.

Remake, Sequel or OG (Original Ghoul): Survival is the 6th – and currently last – film in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead series. Also, the feud back story is a rehash of the good ol’ Hatfield & McCoy feud.

Trick or Treat?: I love George Romero. I love how he ties a message in with each zombie movie he makes. But Survival of the Dead is a stretch, even for the horror genre. “We’ve got to come together before it’s too late”? A’yup. And kumbaya y’all. Hands across America.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the final installment, as this film loses steam less than halfway through. It’s as if the film itself is tired of trying to figure out how to twist zombies into a modern parable. Sad, as the movies before SurvivalLand of the Dead and Diary of the Dead – are good stuff. Where’s Big Daddy when you need him?

Hey, the poster is pretty damn cool though.

Score: 3 out of 5 pumpkins.

31 in 31: Dracula – The Blood is the Life

image

Story: Hey, it’s a party! Hosted by a guy nobody knows! Wait – here he is, and he’s got groovy Tesla-meets-Edison technology! Why is he staring at Mina like that? Oh well, I’m sure that’s nothing. Wonder if he wants some wine?

Scares: Hey, what do you expect from a TV series? Though the scariest part Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ American accent (easily explained by the fact that Drac’d put on a hyper version of the State’s blandness to keep his nouveau riche facade believable to the Brits), there are a few gotcha moments.

Splat factor: Some blood, but nothing too too. Let’s just say NBC ain’t gonna try to blow The Walking Dead out of the water. Still, blood does indeed run.

Sequel, Remake or OG (Original Ghoul): One of the many, many, MANY remakes of Bram Stoker’s original masterpiece. And as with all the others, it’s not a faithful adaptation.

Trick or Treat?: What the hell? Why a TV show? I know. But I’ve been curious about this show ever since I’d heard about it. I figured I wasn’t the only one. And I’m surprised that I like the strange twists this show puts on the usual Dracula mythology. Alan Grayson (aka Big D) has come to England to destroy the group that killed his beloved wife years ago. What’s new? Grayson has magnetic energy at his disposal, and this time it’s literal as well as figurative. His idea is to bankrupt the Order of the Dragon by usurping their monopoly on energy. Nicely done.

Plus, Renfield is less the crazy, slavish toady and more a voice of reason. And you’ll never guess what Van Helsing is up to….

Is this quality television? Um, Ima say no, at least at this point. But damn if it’s not a fun ride. Any Dracula reboot that keeps me invested for more than ten minutes is a win in my book. And this Dracula is winning. I’ll be queuing up my Hulu for this bad, bad boy.

Score: 4 out of 5 pumpkins.
