The Greatest Showman: Sizzle and spectacle

Nutshell: Bring forth the bread and circus! Jackman shines as the great P.T. Barnum, and Michael Gracey shows his first-time director skills by laying out a lavish, lush spectacle that needs to be seen on the largest screen possible for full magnificent effect. I probably should grade this lower due to it’s emphasis on sparkle and lack of substance…but I’ve been hoodwinked. And I’m fine with that. Grade: B

“It’s everything you ever want,
And it’s here right in front of you…”

Story: Young Phineas Barnum seems straight out of a Charles Dickens story; poor, orphaned, and longing for “the good life”. So when he gets an idea on how to achieve that life, he goes all-in, creating The Greatest Show On Earth. Y’know, after all the bumps in the road, of course.

TrailerWatch: “Oceans 8” gets the gals together

“This is Mommy’s very special work trip.”

Ready for a peek into how the ladies are gonna get their Ocean on? Well, Sandra Bullock and company are ready to let you have a look. Synopsis!

The tide has turned and it’s a whole new “Ocean’s” when a group of 8 plan and execute a heist in New York. The film stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina. #OCEANS8 is in theaters June 8th, 2018.

I’m really loving the vibe between all these ladies. The camaraderie feels natural, and the jokes like barbs between friends. And dig Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walking”!  I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

“The Shape of Water” – sparkes but doesn’t fully set sail

Nutshell: While Shape is a fascinating story with absolutely incredible performances by Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon and Octavia Spencer, it has neither the sense of wonder of Pan’s Labyrinth, nor the suspense of The Devil’s Backbone. But I can’t say I hated it. No, I wasn’t fully transported, but I was certainly fascinated. Grade: B

“She said ‘Thank You’.”

Story: A mute woman has a job cleaning a top-secret government research facility.  One day, she finds out that said research is being conducted on a humanoid from the sea who can’t connect with his vicious captors.  Hmm.  Perhaps she’s not alone in the world after all?

Genre I’d put it in: Creature Romance Feature Continue reading

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: “Downsizing”!

Mmm, giant Oreo cookies….what?  I’ve got  passes for the Baltimore area screening of Downsizing, and all I can think of is gigantic food.  #priorities  Synopsis!

Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.

Ready to get small?  C’mon!

Tracee Ellis Ross reads “The Handsy Man” to set things straight

Tracee Ellis Ross is a goddamn national treasure. And while this is a Jimmy Kimmel Live bit, I’d like to order a few copies of that book. Y’know, just in case.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: “Wonder Wheel”!

Get ready for a star-studded cast, Woody Allen at the helm, and a film that has Awards Season Onslaught written all over it (that’s a good thing, y’all.) I’ve got passes for Wonder Wheel, and I’m ready to share.  Synopsis!

WONDER WHEEL tells the story of four characters whose lives intertwine amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s: Ginny (Kate Winslet), an emotionally volatile former actress now working as a waitress in a clam house; Humpty (Jim Belushi), Ginny’s rough-hewn carousel operator husband; Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a handsome young lifeguard who dreams of becoming a playwright; and Carolina (Juno Temple), Humpty’s long-estranged daughter, who is now hiding out from gangsters at her father’s apartment. Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro captures a tale of passion, violence, and betrayal that plays out against the picturesque tableau of 1950s Coney Island.

I can’t wait to see that cinematography; Coney Island is such a fantastic place.  Also, who doesn’t love Winslet and Timberlake?  Let’s go!
