I’ve had the Winchester House on my bucket list for a while now. No, not because I’m a Supernatural fan (though I am – PIE), but because the history of this house sounds fascinating. As a DC gal born and raised, I think of the Winchester House as sort of an O Street Mansion writ large. Really, really large. So when the movie Winchester started production, I couldn’t wait to see what’d they’d do with the myth. First the trailer, and now the poster. Pretty sweet, right? Synopsis!
Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. After being contacted by a mysterious stranger, Michael is forced to uncover the identity of a hidden passenger on his train before the last stop. Nutshell: Bring forth the bread and circus! Jackman shines as the great P.T. Barnum, and Michael Gracey shows his first-time director skills by laying out a lavish, lush spectacle that needs to be seen on the largest screen possible for full magnificent effect. I probably should grade this lower due to it’s emphasis on sparkle and lack of substance…but I’ve been hoodwinked. And I’m fine with that. Grade: B

I’m really loving the vibe between all these ladies. The camaraderie feels natural, and the jokes like barbs between friends. And dig Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walking”! I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

Nutshell: While Shape is a fascinating story with absolutely incredible performances by Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon and Octavia Spencer, it has neither the sense of wonder of Pan’s Labyrinth, nor the suspense of The Devil’s Backbone. But I can’t say I hated it. No, I wasn’t fully transported, but I was certainly fascinated. Grade: B
