“Sisters” — images and 411. Because you need more Pohler and Fey in your life.

Sisters_movie_posterTreat yo’ self, people.  You know Sisters is going to be a hoot.  Okay, I’m hoping it’ll be a hoot.  But anytime I see Amy Pohler and Tina Fey together, it’s a good time.  So yeah, Sisters should be awesome.  Synopsis!

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reunite for Sisters, a new film from Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore about two disconnected sisters summoned home to clean out their childhood bedroom before their parents sell the family house. Looking to recapture their glory days, they throw one final high-school-style party for their classmates, which turns into the cathartic rager that a bunch of ground-down adults really need.

Fey produces the comedy alongside Jay Roach (Meet the Parents series) and John Lyons (Austin Powers in Goldmember), and Poehler executive produces alongside Jeff Richmond and Brian Bell from a script by Paula Pell (TV’s Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock).

So peep these images.  Sisters opens December 18th.

Oh noes, here goes.

You have no idea who I am but Denise has given me the keys to the kingdom to vent my spleen (her actual words) on whatever nerdery I like. So prepare yourself, I guess. Maybe I’ll take you down the rabbit hole that is the BBW Billionaire Menage genre of romance novels? Because it’s out there!

Definitely, I will be talking about Mariah Carey’s directing debut, because I am the Mariah Carey of Mariah Carey directing debuts. Take that as you will.

A little about me…my name is Kristina irl, I work in academia, basically, if you’ve read Snowcrash, I’m Hiro. Like, literally, a mixed-race army brat who lives on the internet. It’s freaky.

If I had to classify my fangirling into Jeopardy categories, they are as follows: authors whose first names are Neal/Neil, movies with the word Star in them, historical crime bosses (Boss Tweed, Pablo Escobar, Julius Caesar, etc.), cartoons with underage nonviolent protagonists (e.g. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Steven Universe), superhero movies and tv shows, aaaaaaaaaaaaaand um. I’m doing pretty well on Plants v. Zombies right now? I can’t think of a 6th thing. Food? Food is pretty great.

Anyway. What with the news that Lin-Manuel Miranda NOT ONLY is writing the music for the new Disney movie Moana, but ALSO for freaking Star Wars because everyone’s gotta get our generation’s Mozart’s fingers in their pie, I give you this: #Force4Ham and #HamiltonStarWars

How lucky we are, to be alive right now, you guys.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: In the Heart of the Sea

In the Heart of the Sea onesheetIt’s Giving Tuesday, so I feel like giving.  Want some passes for the Baltimore area screening of In the Heart of the Sea?  Of course you do; it’s got a cool “based on” story, on top of that, the true story is what Moby Dick is based on, and it’s got Chris Hemsworth‘s abs.  Did I mention this screening is in 3D!  *cue woooooo sounds* Sounds like a win-win-win to me.  Synopsis!

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance.  The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.  But that told only half the story.  “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive.  Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

The trailer looks amazing, and shows one of my favorite “why isn’t he famouser?” actors, Cillian Murphy.  And I’m hoping the 3D will really bring out the cinematography. Y’all know I’m a production deets nerd.  So waddaya waiting for?  Oh, the details?  Well then, right this way…

New #Krampus featurette shows you why you should be good for goodness sake

Krampus onesheet newHo ho oh no!  ‘Tis the season for jolly ol’ elves, dreidel spinning, airing of grievances, the seven principles, and the ever-lovin’ yule log.  But did you know that there’s a darker side?  Unseen by most an underworld that is just as real, but not as brightly lit… a dark side?* Yep.  The dark side of Christmas is Krampus, and he doesn’t even carry a lightsaber, or have Jar-Jar Binks in his backstory (probably a good thing.)

The movie Krampus just released a featurette that lets you in on a little of the myth behind the monster.  And it’s not just a shill for their film; there’s some seriously cool stuff in here.  Including lots of pop culture reverences, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural, and tidbits on how some folks across the pond are keeping the legend alive by donning their ghoulish apparel during the holidays.  So?  Gonna try for coal this year?  Probably not the best idea.  Y’know, just in case…

Krampus hits theaters this Friday, December 4th, 2015.  Better watch out, indeed…

*Sorry Tales from the Darkside, couldn’t resist…

alvin road chip onesheetHello, holiday season!  You’ve seen Santa sled past Macy’s, maybe you’re even catching the Dog Show (you should — Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir are covering it, so that’s bound to be freakin’ awesome) while digesting that pumpkin pie you snuck before The Big Meal.

TrailerWatch: “The Secret Life of Pets” has a holiday message for you

The Secret Life of Pets onesheet_…and it’s “don’t Pet and Santa”.  Oh sure, there are those pet humans who manage to deliver amazing shots of their pets for their holiday cards.  But most of us have pets that aren’t down with that.  Seriously; unless I want to have a “Merry Christmas From Our Litterbox To Yours!” card, I’m SOL.

But The Secret Life of Pets feels the pain those of us who struggle to find that one shot — heck, any shot — that we can share with our near and dear.  Enjoy, and happy Thanksgiving/Holidays/Pet Posing Season!

Awesome Con has a Black Friday treat: a free t-shirt with weekend pass purchases!

awesome con black friday 2015

Yeah, you’re high on L-Tryptophan.  You never want to see pumpkin pie again (or at least ’til December.)  You can barely lift the remote, let alone thumb through the comics you bought to tide you over for the weekend.  But amp up, little fanperson — there’s one thing you should know.  If you haven’t picked up your Awesome Con 2016 pass yet, they’ve got a cool (awesome?) deal from Thursday to Saturday: get a free t-shirt if you pick up a 3-day pass this weekend!  Yep.  They’ll mail you a t-shirt.  In time for the holidays.  For you to wear before the ‘con.

VIP folks, that means you get two — TWO — t-shirts!  One that’ll be mailed to you, and the other VIP shirt that you’ll pick up at Awesome Con.  Same goes for any other VIP pass.  Sweet, right?

What can I say?  I’m a sucker for t-shirts.  And Black Friday stuff.  So when the two meet?  I’m all over it.

Awesome Con will be June 3-5, 2016, at the DC Convention Center.  It was a blast last year, so if you’ve been wondering about a pass, this is a great time to grab one.  I share because I care.  See you in June!

“Captain America: Civil War” trailer: Bucky! Black Widow! BLACK PANTHER!!!

civil war whose side are you onIt’s getting close y’all.  Six months ’til Captain America: Civil War hits theaters.  And to help gear folks up, Marvel released a new trailer during Jimmy Kimmel last night.  It does not disappoint.

I’m liking the slow burn on the Superhero Registration Act, and how Bucky and Cap are back as a team.  I’m guessing there’ll be no hints of Avengers Disassembled here, as the MCU hasn’t touched on any of the comic book backstories (yet….)  Still, it’s awesome to finally see Black Panther, even if it’s just for a few seconds.  (Remember; his stand-alone film doesn’t hit ’til 2018.  Gads – the waiting y’all!)

Enjoy!

Victor Frankenstein: what’s scarier, monsters or a man obsessed?

victor frankenstein
Nutshell:  A fascinating look at the friendship/partnership between Victor Frankenstein and his right-hand-man Igor.  But this film also shines a light on obsession and its various forms, including a stellar performance by Sherlock‘s Andrew Scott as a driven police officer determined to bring the pair down.  Grade: B

So.  You thought you’d seen the last of the spooky for the year?  Well, no.  Frankenstein, his monster, and Victor’s dogsbody Igor are comin’ at’cha, and it’s a film that’s well worth a look even for folks who don’t “do” horror.  Why?  Because Victor Frankenstein manages to keep the rip-roaring “It’s alive! ALIVE!” action of James Whale’s 1931 classic and add in a look at how obsession of any type can ultimately bring about your downfall.  Continue reading
