Baltimore Screening Pass-Palooza: Self/Less — who’d you rather be?

selfless teaser

UPDATE: Passes have been distributed. Thanks to everyone who entered, and congratulations to the winners!

I’m loving the Self/Less trailer.  Very Philip K. Dick.  Here’s the synopsis:

Billionaire industrialist Damian Hale (Ben Kingsley) is master of his universe, until he encounters a foe that he can’t defeat: cancer. His only hope is a radical medical procedure called “shedding,” in which his consciousness is transferred to a healthy body. After the procedure, Damian, now called Edward (Ryan Reynolds), starts a new life in New Orleans, but is plagued by disturbing images. When he delves into Edward’s mysterious origin, he learns that some will kill to keep it secret.

Oooh…  So, passes?  I’ve got ’em, but this time they’re PDF.  How to win one?  Read on…

Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension — first trailer goes live. Ish.

paranormal activity ghost dimension headerHorror series time, kiddies! Paranormal Activity was a slam-bang hit.  PA2 was pretty cool too.  Heck, I even sat still for PA3 and PA4.  Never did hit The Marked Ones, mostly because the spin-off vibe had me worried, and PA4 didn’t bring it like I’d hoped it would.  (Though I’ll most likely cover 5 as part of this year’s 31-in-31…)

Back to the installment at hand.  After seeing this trailer I’m torn; on the one hand, I love the Hannibal-stag appearance of the shadow entities. On the other, I’m a huge fan of showing as little as possible when it comes to ghosts. It’s often scarier if you don’t know what’s coming, or who/what’s doing it. Guess we’ll all see when the film hits. But one thing’s for sure; that wall portal/hallway is pretty cool.

Good or ill, Ghost Dimension is supposedly the final installment of the Paranormal Activity series.  So here’s hoping that they’ve saved some serious boogie-boogie for last.  Check out the trailer and see for yourself. Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension opens October 23rd, 2015.

The gang’s all here for the “Independence Day: Resurgence” Global Press event

IDR_1920_BG_rgbI love Independence Day.  Yes, even though the aliens are IBM compatible.  As crazy-cool CGI popcorn wonderland, it works for me. So I’m excited and not a little bit nervous about the upcoming sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence. But the studio managed to gather together a slew of the original cast, which makes me happy.  I even see Brent Spiner, whom I’d assumed met a grisly end at the…hands?…of the aliens in ID4Perhaps he’s coming back as Data? Ooooh!

The cast and crew held a “global press event” yesterday, and you can catch all the pertinents on the livestream.  The money shot from this event is the “Moon Tug”, a craft cobbled together from alien tech. It looks like the love child of Ripley’s work-loader and an AT-AT.  I can’t wait to see it throw down…

Here’s the basic movie 411:

We always knew they were coming back.  After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale.  Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.  But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force.  Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women  can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Director: Roland Emmerich
Cast: Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Angelababy

Off the Shelf — Gotham Academy Volume 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy

Gotham Academy 1 coverNutshell: Gorgeous art and a fresh YA spin give Welcome to Gotham Academy a new take on a well-worn mythology. Though a little too dependent on manga tropes to be truly original, with tie-ins to other series in the Batman universe and characters who haven’t yet decided if they’re good or evil, this looks like the start of a fun ride. Grade: A-

Story: Olive Silverlock’s second year at Gotham Academy is starting off with a bang.  Or rather with a rattle of ghostly chains, which she’s determined to get to the bottom of.  Then there’s Batman, who scares her witless…what did happen last summer, anyway?

Best Lines:
“Every stone has a story…but not every story has a happy ending.”
“That wasn’t me at all. I’ve changed…and I don’t like the person I’m becoming.”
“It’s jut the Bat-Signal.  Same old thing as every other night.”

Goodies: Variant cover gallery.

Thoughts: Gotham Academy is the newest entry into the Gotham mythos; a look at YA characters in a YA setting doing YA things.  Oh, and having to deal with everything that happens as a consequence of living in a city where Batman deals with supervillains.  If you’ve got a younger sibling/cousin/friend/neighbor who’s looking to dive into the DC universe now that things are hot, this is a great place for that kid to start.  Older YA fans, and Batman aficionados will also want to take a peek, as Welcome to Gotham Academy (which I’ll call Gotham Academy for the rest of this review, as I’m lazy) teases connections to the larger mythos, and the crossover possibilities are endless.

Tons of Easter Eggs and shout-outs to other series, like the Draculords and Black Canary’s band Ashes on Sunday from Batgirl of Burnside. And of course Olive’s mother Sybil, who Arkham Manor folks will recognize.  And psst; the last page of Volume 1 promises plenty of shakeups.  I’ll just leave that for you to ponder.

Gotham Academy is VERY manga in it’s look, feel and  characterizations. There’s also comparisons to be made to Harry Potter, Detective Comics and even old Scooby-Doo and Batman: The Animated Series eps.  (BTW, Gotham Academy has the best school lunch program. Ever.)

Speaking of Scooby-Doo, the bad guys are definitely cartoonish.  Possibly to keep things light?  In fact, monstrous Killer Croc is actually kinda adorable, and that ties in nicely to the change he’s going through in Batman’s New 52 titles.  Can we expect the same kind of characterization in the Suicide Squad film?  I kinda hope so, as I’m liking the “misunderstood guy that’s done wrong and now just wants to be left alone” vibe.

Anyway, lightness isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I’m used to the dark, angular baddies from other Bat properties.  It’ll just take me a bit of getting used to.  And the main characters have names that make me giggle a bit: Olive’s frenemy Pomeline Fritch.  Pom Fritch?  *giggles* And the mysterious student Tristan Grey.  Seriously?  We’re doing 50 Shades knockoffs? Though his character does sorta bring Christian Grey back to his roots, as Tristan has this weird virus…

The editing here is a bit iffy at times; abrupt page cuts make going from scene to scene jarring at times.  But I kept getting sucked back in thanks to Karl Kerschl’s gorgeous art.  And the story by Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher is fun, but has an undercurrent of menace that keeps it firmly in Gotham territory. There’s tons of Gotham history, and we get to dig into the pasts of the Cobblepot family, so I’m betting future arcs will have a look at other notorious folks.  Can’t wait.

Series like this one and the New 52 Batgirl are perfect for younger readers who “don’t like” or aren’t ready for the darker stuff.  A perfect gateway drug, if you will.  Before you know it, they’ll be all over Harley Quinn, Batman, Inc. and then hello Divergence!

Gotham Academy is a perfect beach read for folks who want a bit of fun in the summer sun.  Get back to the darkness in a post-Endgame Gotham after the sun sets.  The bats are out at night, anyway.

Publication 411:  Collects Gotham Academy #1-6. Hits shelves June 23, 2015.

Subscribe or Shelve: If you’re into a YA spin with your Gotham, give this a go.  Dark Knight seekers may decide to give this a pass though, beautiful art and all.  But they’ll be missing a look into the innerworkings of Gotham, and that’d be a shame.

Movie Review: Inside Out

inside_out_ver3

Nutshell: quite possibly Pixar’s first existential children’s film.  Inside Out may have all the bright-n-shiny for the little ones, but make no mistake; adults will be the ones that really dive into this film.  Tons of stuff to love, though a few scary/sad moments for the very wee ones.  Grade: A-

Okay first things first; this is not a new idea.  Herman’s Head did it in the 90s, and there have been tons of other media that have dabbled with the whole “personification of emotions” thing.  HOWEVER.  Inside Out is flat-out adorable.  Disney-Pixar does what it does best; making things as kawaii as humanly possible.  And this time they knock it out of the park.

Riley is 11.  She knows who she is; she’s got a great family, a cool BFF, a killer slapshot and just the right amount of goofball.  But when her family moves to San Fransisco, things start to shift.  Things get worse when the emotions that guide her — Anger, Disgust, Fear, Joy and Sadness — get separated.  Without Joy and Sadness, can Anger, Disgust and Fear rule the day?  Perhaps if she was a crotchety old man yelling at kids to get off her lawn.  But that’s not the case… Continue reading

Krampus: official synopsis and release date. Better enjoy summer, kiddies!

krampus-face-card-2014-teasercardOh how I love mythology.  Especially when it screws with the status quo.  Like Krampus.  You know Krampus; I know you watch Supernatural y’all.

Mr. K is getting his own movie, and not the Grade Z flicks he’s been in before.  Nossir.  Feast your eyes on the first 411 on this film!  They had me at Adam Scott, people.  I’m a huge Parks & Rec fan.  Plus, it’s written by Michael “Trick ‘r Treat” Dougherty!  And the creatures are gonna be courtesy of WETA Workshop!  Okay, I’m pumped.

Ready for December, kiddies?  Krampus hits theaters December 4th.  You better watch out…

KRAMPUS

December 4, 2015
Genre: Horror-Comedy
Cast: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner,
Directed by: Michael Dougherty
Written by: Michael Dougherty & Zach Shields & Todd Casey
Produced by: Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Alex Garcia, Michael Dougherty
Executive Producer: Daniel Stillman

Legendary Pictures’ Krampus, a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday.  The horror-comedy tells the story of young Max (Emjay Anthony), who turns his back on Christmas as his dysfunctional family comes together and comically clashes over the holidays.

When they accidentally unleash the wrath of Krampus—an ancient entity from European folklore—all hell breaks loose and beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own.  Now, the fractured family is forced to unite if they hope to survive.

Krampus and his mischievous underlings are being created by the combined efforts of Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, both renowned for their epic work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and King Kong, among many others.

Written and directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ’r Treat), Krampus is co-written by Zach Shields and Todd Casey and produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, Alex Garcia and Dougherty.  The film will be released by Universal Pictures.

Halloween ComicFest: first look at this year’s crop o’ free comics!

First: Free Comic Book Day every May.  Then: Halloween ComicFest every October.  Too early to think about Halloween?  No way y’all!

The “Miss Popularity” issue has gotta be the B&W Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1 ComicFest reprint, which is a perfect complement to the ComicFest special edition of Afterlife With Archie from last year.

And even though it seems like she’s broken her spine in several places, I need the Vampblade.  Why?  Three words: Featuring Zombie Tramp.  Yeah darlin’.

But my favorite of the bunch has gotta be the special EC homage variant reprint Grimm Tales of Terror: Web of Deceit. It’s a reprint of GTOT #2, but hello gorgeous!

And I haven’t even touched on the mini-comics, let alone the super-secret hush-hush DC releases that haven’t been announced yet. Check out the press release, and be sure to hit up their website to see if there are any favorites of yours that I’ve missed!

[REBLOG] Food for Binge(watch)-ing: make an epic rice cooker pancake!

I’ve always had a rice cooker in my house. Grew up with one. My mom was the lady who made a pot of rice with everything, including spaghetti. Any wonder I love carbs?

So this? EPIC. Now I can binge on Orange is the New Black and never once worry that there’s nothing yummy to eat. Because this puppy will feed me through the entire binge. (Maybe.)

Thank you, rice cooker gods!
