Off the Shelf — Trees, Volume 1: In Shadow

Trees cover

Nutshell:  The creator of Transmetropolitan, Global Frequency, and so many other instant-classics has dropped another on our doorstep.  There’s love, human sexuality, nature, evolution, on a world stage.  And unseen aliens that don’t give a crap about us and our petty lives.  Hop on board this train, so you can be one of the cool kids that can say you started reading way before everyone else. A

Story:  Ten years ago aliens — in the form of giant monolithic “Trees” — landed on Earth.  Now, things have settled back into a strange new version of normalcy.  From Italy to China, NYC to Norway, Somalia to Paris; humans are doing their thing.  But the trees don’t care.  Or are we missing something?

Thoughts: I always feared I wasn’t cool enough for Ellis.  Like I was reading his stuff on the sly, and once found out, I’d never make the cut again.  Luckily, I’m ready to give up on that bit of mental self-flagellation.  Basically, Trees Vol 1 is the beginning of an epic.  The storylines criss-cross in and out of each other, some connecting and others not.  Together they show what life would be like if Earth was occupied by silent alien life.  And that’s exactly how you’d expect; we’d freak out a little, and then things would shuffle around a bit and then resume their course to normalcy, incorporating/ignoring the new bits as necessary.

Wayback Review: Tea with Jane Austen

Lazy?  Yes.  But maybe today’s chill will make you want to curl up with a cuppa too.  From Sleeping Hedghog in ’11, the original was in Green Man Review in ’06.  As always, clicky on the title for the full piece!

Tea with Jane AustenKim Wilson: Tea with Jane Austen

Books are a lot like meals; sometimes you want something long, drawn-out and filling, other times you want something light and easy, but with enough substance to make it worthwhile. I have to admit that my current diet of epic-length tomes left me wanting something I could sink my teeth into without sinking into the couch for an inordinate amount of time. So when this book came to my attention, I thought, tea-time it is!

With sections on tea in the morning and evening, shopping for tea, and tea while traveling, Ms. Wilson gives a peek into the world of tea in English society at all levels. There is also a section on tea and health that gives a disturbing look at how far smugglers would go to sell “tea” to their customers (the image of modern day drug peddlers cutting their wares with rat poison springs to mind), but also shows that even in that period, tea was taken for medicinal purposes. I’d take a cup of tea rather than a bowl of leeches any day!

Information is presented in a variety of ways, from general discussion to historical example and descriptions of famous places like Twinings and Sydney Gardens. Quotes from Jane Austen’s own personal letters, as well as her famous novels, illustrate most of what is discussed. The author blends all of these different voices together seamlessly. The sections are easy to read and can be broken down into their smaller parts and enjoyed a little at a time, great while taking a quick break with a cup of tea, which I wouldn’t doubt was completely intentional.

Awards Season: Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards 2015

Makeup Hair Guild logo 2015This year’s Distinguished Artisan Award will go to Pan’s Labyrinth & Pacific Rim‘s Guillermo Del Toro, an amazing choice!  (Johnny Depp took this honor last year.) And this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to one of my heroes, Rick Baker!  (Last year’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to Dick Smith, so it’s obvious this Guild knows what it’s doing.)

The list of presenters are pretty cool too.  Can this be broadcast live, please?

spectre onesheetWhat’s he doing? And, more importantly, who’s he doing it to?  I know, I wanna know too!  And I kinda want his sunglass/goggles.  They look perfect for the current round of snow days on the East Coast.

Answers to these questions — except for maybe where to get those goggles — will be revealed when Spectre hits theaters November 6th, 2015.

Way Back Review — Charmed: The Complete First Season

From Green Man Review, back in 2006.  As always, clicky the headline for the full piece!

Charmed: The Complete First Season

Penned for Green Man Review.

charmedWhen Charmed first aired, it was dismissed by many as a poor-Wiccan’s Buffy knock-off. Which, considering Buffy the Vampire Slayer was only in its first season, wasn’t intended to be kind. But viewers took to the three Halliwell sisters, and even embraced such story-altering changes as the death of a sister and the discovery of a new one. In the eight seasons Charmed was on the air, love came and went, children entered the picture, and powers were lost and regained too many times to count. But in the end, good always triumphed over evil.

And now, with the final season wrapped up tightly (or rather loosely; there’s still a push from the fans to have a spin-off series created for the next generation of Halliwells), it’s as good a time as any to take a look back at when this series was brand new. Or, in a different vein, When Prue Walked The Earth. For those who are unfamiliar with the series, the original three sisters were: Alyssa Milano as the youngest daughter, Phoebe, Holly Marie Combs as middle child Piper, and Shannen Doherty, sometimes considered the enfant terrible of Aaron Spelling’s stable of actors, as eldest daughter Prudence (or Prue, for short). Shannen left the show at the end of season three amid rumors of clashes with the other actors, which her prior departure from the soapy teen drama Beverly Hills 90210 only seemed to corroborate. Rose McGowan stepped in as heretofore unknown half-sister Paige, a role the actress continued until the series finale at the end of season eight. Fans of the series can be found at either end of the spectrum; there are rabid Prue fans, and there are those who bid her good riddance and welcomed Paige with open arms.

So after all the drama on stage and off, how does the first season hold up? Constance M. Burge, the creator of the show, had her hands firmly in the making of this first season, and it shows with the episodes strong themes of sisterhood and family. Things would start to get soapy a few seasons later, when Ms. Burge left the show, but the first season episodes can be enjoyed in without worrying too much about losing where you last left off. There are a few recurring stories (the men in the sister’s lives is the most obvious one), but each episode has enough exposition to answer any questions a casual viewer may have.
