Movie Review: Black Sea

black sea

Nutshell: Black Sea tries to be Das Boot or Crimson Tide, but doesn’t quite hit the mark in terms of thrills.  Jude Law’s performance is excellent, true. But I still can’t help but want more.  Black Sea feels like an 80s thriller dragged into the 21st Century, and it suffers for the trip. Grade: C

It’s tough in the 21st Century, coming up with bad guys that aren’t zombies or too-easily-reached-for terrorist threats.  Black Sea decides on two ol’ favorites; Big Business and Fear Of Russia.  Well, that second one is sorta iffy, but hear me out.

Robinson (Jude Law) gets the boot from the salvage company he’s work for for years.  Seems they don’t want to deal with submarine salvage anymore, and as that’s Robinson’s gig?  Asta.  But as he realizes the incredibly tenuous grasp he has on the roof over his head, Robinson’s friend/former co-worker gives him info on a possible huge score.  Seems a German U-boat (read: sub) sank in the waters of Russia back in the WWII day.  Said boat was loaded with gold, from the Russians to the Nazis.  But the boat sank, and as water rights drifted back and forth (heh), this boat became a legend, that faded away in memory.  If they had a sub — and a crew to steer ‘er by — they could find the gold and make a mint, as long as they stay off the radar of Russian ships in the area.  Too good to be true? Of course it is.  The half Brit, half Russian crew start to mistrust each other, and then their own sub begins to have trouble.  Big trouble.  If they find the gold, will they live to spend it?

Director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play), likes a slow burn in his thrillers, and that’s definitely here in Black Sea.  If you fear tight spaces — or being sunk out at sea — you’ll definitely get chills.  Art direction and set design is incredible, considering only a part of the film was shot on an actual sub.  Law delivers a first-class performance, with his paranoia and desperation showing on his face rather than “Heeeere’s Johnny” theatrics.

Scoot McNairy (no, not making this up) is wonderfully self-serving as the guy who comes along to safeguard their backer’s investment.  And the overall chemistry between the ensemble cast is believable, and at times even fun to watch.  Thrillers that inject a touch of levity?  Win.

So why didn’t I absolutely love it?  Five words: I kept checking my watch.

Thrillers should keep you on the edge of your seat, or at least glued to the screen.  But less than an hour in, I took a peek to see where we were on time.  I rarely do that.  So it’s a death knell.  The second toll of that bell?  I figured it was at least an hour and a half in.  It’s bad enough I checked, worse that it was less than an hour in.  Everything should have kept me glued.  But there was something about the pacing that just didn’t add up.  Plus, there were a few times where Cliche Horror Movie Decisions reared their ugly head. Not great in horror, but really bad ideas outside of the genre that birthed ’em.  My two least favorite:

*Hey, we need a certain amount of people here, or we’ll all die.  Why don’t I get someone to kill someone else?

* We’re really, really close to a cliff.  We need to get away or someone may fall.  Let’s keep going and see what happens!

And that kills a film for me.  Black Sea is a mashup of thriller and serious thought piece.  Pity the two don’t mesh the way Macdonald had hoped.

Off the Shelf: Dark Engine Volume 1

Dark Engine vol 1

Nutshell: Dark Engine is a mind-trip.  You’re either down for not knowing what the frak is going on, or you’re not.  I’m not.  Get a coherent storyline together, and I’ll try again.  Grade: D

Story: Who the hell knows?  A woman named Sym has been sent back in time to kill a big dinosaur queen that has caused the destruction of their planet.  Then there’s Egyptians, Vikings and a Chinese palace.  Much blood — and a Terminator-esque “twist” — ensues.  Cue the Cthulhu-lite, navel-gazing dialogue!

Thoughts:  I could simply jot down the notes I wrote while I was reading this, but typing “WTF IS GOING ON IS THIS OVER YET” twelve times gets repetitive.  Image Comics, I know that you’re all about cutting edge, and John Bivens’ art in this series is that in spades. I’m definitely getting a “Swamp Thing Meets  H.R. Geiger” thing, and I’m liking it.  (Best Panel: exploding hippo.  ‘Nuff said.)  But writer Ryan Burton is all over the place with his story.  Dark Engine suffers from creators being so into their own heads about what’s going on that they forget to clue in the readers.  “Close-up” panels during major action scenes help cement the feeling that more’s going on in the gutters than in the panels.

Subscribe or Shelve: While the art is fetching, the storyline (such as it is) is not.  Come back to me when you’re more coherent.  Or at least slip a few tabs of acid onto the page, so I can share in the trip you’re so obviously on.  Bogarting ain’t friendly, y’all.

Publication 411: Hit shelves January 6th, 2015.  Collects Dark Engine #1-4.

[NOTE: I received a copy of this title pre-publication via Netgalley.  I received no compensation for my review.]

ALLEGIANCE premiere info!

allegiance onesheetLike The Americans?  Well, Allegiance has that same Soviet Spy thriller vibe, but it’s in modern day.  So no USSR, but the Russians are still here, and they’re sleeping.  Er, sleepers.  (I was never very good at the spy thing.  Too mouthy.)

Check out sneak-peek pics at the Allegiance Web site, and read on for the full 411 from the PR people!

Allegiance hits NBC on February 5th, right after The Blacklist.  Sounds like a good pairing. Continue reading

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 has a Superb-Owl spot. Wanna see?

HTTM2 onesheetNobody has even accused Hot Tub Time Machine of being subtle.  That’s why I loved the first one (also, 80s shout-out humor.)  So now Hot Tub Time Machine 2 has a Super Bowl ad that puts it all out there.  Um, kinda literally.  But for this year’s game?  Totes relevant.

Here’s the synopsis of the film, in case you haven’t seen the trailer yet:

When Lou (Corddry) finds himself in trouble, Nick (Robinson) and Jacob (Duke) fire up the hot tub time machine in an attempt to get back to the past. But they inadvertently land in the future. Now they have to alter the future in order to save the past… which is really the present, in the sequel from the same team that brought you the original cult hit.

Sounds like paradoxes abound here, but all in good fun (and good spoof).  HTTM2 hits theaters February 20th.  So program that into your own hot tub.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza — Kingsman: The Secret Service

Kingsman onesheetCOLIN FIRTH Y’ALL.  Fine.  The Secret Service is a great comic, and the trailer looks like they’re doing the story justice.  What story?  This:

Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. http://www.becomeakingsman.com/

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Jupiter Ascending

Jupiter Ascending onesheetWhat is it with my favorite 90s/00s stars hitting theaters this month?  Kingsman‘s Colin Firth, and now Jupiter Ascending with Sean “Winter Is Coming” Bean (aka Richard Sharpe).  I’m sure you’ve seen the trailer for Jupiter Ascending, with a ton of crazy/cool FX.  Here’s the synopsis, in case you missed the storyline marveling at all the Blade Runner-esque visuals:

Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things.  Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks.  Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

By the power of Zuul: meet your new Ghostbusters!

(Photo Credit: Brian To / FayesVision / WENN.com)

Y’all.  When I heard about an all-female Ghostbusters?  I thought marketing ploy.  But now I see who they cast and I’m SO DOWN FOR THIS.  Coming Soon had the deets, and I bounced in my seat.

Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Saturday Night Live‘s Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.  Bravo, casting people. I absolutely love McKinnon — her Bieber spoofs on SNL are spot on, and she was freakin’ hilarious on The Big Gay Sketch Show  — and getting a cast full of highly skilled improvisational comics should hopefully mean lots of fun ad-libbing that makes it onto the finished reels.

What do you think; are you in?
