Book Review: Francesca Haig, The Fire Sermon

Fire Sermon novel

Nutshell: Like The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, or Red Rising?  The Fire Sermon is right up there with the rest of those top-notch YA series.  It should get a ton of love when it hits shelves; if it doesn’t, that’s just criminal.  A fully realized mythology and characters that are mysterious and yet still compelling.  Francesca Haig shows incredible promise as a novelist, and The Fire Sermon makes me want to grab up her poetry to see if it too has that urgent, mysterious feel.  It’ll also help me pass the time ‘til book two hits.  Grade: A

Imagine if you had a twin.  No, not talking about regular twinning, you crazy-cool multiples.  I mean imagine if you had a twin that appeared to be the opposite of you: blemished, flawed, “different”…or perfect, loved, accepted.  Now think about what would happen if the “perfect” Alpahs decided to subjugate their “lesser” Omegas.  And if the Alphas continued to oppress their twins to the point of near starvation and complete poverty.  Even though the death of one twin would mean the immediate death of the other.  Sound crazy?  Or does it sound like something the human race could easily do?  The Fire Sermon makes readers think uncomfortable thoughts about what it is to be human, to be a member of society, and most importantly, what you would do if you were placed in one of those castes.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: The Lazarus Effect!

lazarus effect onesheetHi everyone.  How’s your weekend going?  Wish it were better?  Well, I’ve got passes for the Baltimore area screening of The Lazarus Effect.  That could help, right?  Free stuff is always a good thing.

Seen the first images?  Well here’s the synopsis:

A team of graduate students are conducting experiments on reviving the dead. When they successfully bring back a dog, they know this breakthrough will change the world. But when the dean learns of their unsanctioned tests, she shuts them down, confiscating their materials, including the video that proves their technique works. Desperate to save their data and years of work, they break into their own lab to reproduce their results. But in the race to get what they need before they get caught, a member of the team is electrocuted and killed, leaving the group devastated…until they realize they have their first human test subject. What they don’t realize is when you bring someone back from the dead, they don’t come back the same. And what they bring with them is pure evil.

Kinda digging the retro vibe of the poster design.  White borders, groovy!  Ready to get your scaredy-cat on?  Well, read on for how to score yourself tickets…

Elsewhere Review — The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water

As always, clicky for the original piece!

Movie Review — The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of WaterSpongebob

Twitview: fun for kids & grownup fans of the original series.  Sometimes too silly, but it’s all in good fun. Will probably spawn a hipster drinking game. Grade: B

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?  And how does that pineapple never suffer from decomposition?  Oh who cares — it’s SpongeBob y’all!  And he’s got all of his buddies (Patrick, Gary, Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs) and even his rival Sheldon Plankton (as well as Plankton’s computer wife, Karen) here.  It’s the usual Krabby Patty eating good times, with Plankton trying to steal the secret recipe for the Krabby Patty…until a pirate named Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas, totally game for the goofy) enters the scene and makes off with the secret recipe!  Whatever will Bikini Bottom do without Krabby Patties?  And how will our hero get the recipe back and save the day?

Well, first off: Bikini Bottom devolves into a hilarious Mad Max wasteland in the span of 5 seconds without their beloved patties.  Seeing Mr. Krabs in leather is worth the price of admission for any fan of the show.  Second: that’s cheating y’all.  But suffice it to say that the trailer gives you more than a hint.  And when things go from animated to live-action, Banderas gets to pull out all the stops, which is exactly what’s needed when he’s playing against a group of juvenile animated invertebrates.  And Sandy.  (Spoiler alert: Sandy’s transformation to live-action is kinda awesome.)

New MINIONS poster and trailer!

minions posters Yaaaay — Minions!  Gotta love ’em.  I have no idea what they’re saying, but I’m dying to know more about the little yellow cuteballs.  So when a new trailer hit?  Hello there.

Synopsis?  Got you one better; press notes! Here:

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. Rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today, Minions is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the 3D-CG comedy adventure, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer of the film. http://www.minionnation.net

I can’t wait to see the li’l fellas interact with Napoleon.  That should be a hoot… Minions hits theaters July 10, 2015.  Banana!

Off the Shelf: DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology 2015

DC Essential GN(I’m gonna skip the usual outline of OtS reviews, as this book isn’t a series, but a guide.  Bon Appetit!)

“Where do I start reading?”  Heck honey, if I knew that, I’d be famous.  Because everyone has their own ideas of where the best place to begin actually begins.  And there are so freakin’ many titles to choose from, how could any one person know it all?

Well, stop breathing into a paper bag.  DC Comics has done all the hard work for you.  Up to this year, at least.  From absolutely FOB (Fresh Onto Books) newbie to die-hard fan looking for his or her next big favorite, if it’s DCU, it’s here.  From your Constantine obsession (just me?) to the comix that are kid-approved for the youngsters in your midst, if you’re looking for what to read, and in what order, you’ve hit paydirt. Though this book isn’t geared to fans of Gotham, Arrow or The Flash, it’s definitely got tons of stuff for anyone who love the shows and wants to understand all the Easter Eggs that the shows throw into every episode.  There’s even a section called “From Page to Screen”, for TV/movie/gaming fans that haven’t made the leap to comics yet. (Note: check out iZombie.  You’re welcome.)

Seventh Son images and press release

seventh son onesheet“Seventh son of a seventh son…” Yeah, I’ve heard that one. I’ve also heard a whole lot of other Iron Maiden.  (I also happen to love Sheena Easton’s “You Could Have Been With Me”, another reference to this mythicall bit of overbreeding.  I’m a mystery wrapped in an enigma.)

But the film Seventh Son will take that idea out of vinyl and onto celluloid.  Swords and sorcery commence!  Here’s the synopsis:

In a time of enchantments when legends and magic collide, the sole remaining warrior of a mystical order (Oscar® winner Jeff Bridges) travels to find a prophesized hero born with incredible powers, the last Seventh Son (Ben Barnes). Torn from his quiet life as a farmhand, the unlikely young hero embarks on a daring adventure with his battle-hardened mentor to vanquish a dark queen (Julianne Moore) and the army of supernatural assassins she has dispatched against their kingdom.

Dragons?  Could Kit Harrington be there too?  Of course! Read on for the full details, and check out these pics…

The Ghastly Awards: 2014 Best of Horror Comics nominees announced!

ghastly awards 2014 noms partialWhat’s award season without awards? Nothing, I tell ya.  So want to know what was top-shelf in horror comics last year?  Take a gander at the list of Ghastly Award nominees.  Afterlife with Archie, Crossed: Badlands, Nailbiter, Rachel Rising, The Strain…yeah, you know those would be around.  Just like the nods to Joe Hill, Terry Moore, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Ben Templesmith and Francesco Francavilla.

But that’s just the start.  From issues at the stores to chapters on the Web, from writers to colorists to letterers, the Ghastlies have collected a very good group of top-notch talent.  Personally, I was surprised at how much I liked the Grimm Tales of Terror (great Urban Legend stories), as well as God Is Dead: Book of Acts (like American Gods?  You’ll dig this.)

Here’s where you come in.  Wanna help pick a winner?  Fan votes determine who gets the Ghastly for Best Horror Comic Cover! Winners will be announced March 1st, 2015.  Fans and creators can vote straight from the Ghastlies website: www.ghastlyawards.com.

Congratulations to all the nominees!

[Note: I’m a Ghastly Award judge, but needed to share the noms anyway.  Because if you like horror, you’ll want to read these.  Trust me.]
