New MINIONS poster and trailer!

minions posters Yaaaay — Minions!  Gotta love ’em.  I have no idea what they’re saying, but I’m dying to know more about the little yellow cuteballs.  So when a new trailer hit?  Hello there.

Synopsis?  Got you one better; press notes! Here:

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. Rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today, Minions is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the 3D-CG comedy adventure, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer of the film. http://www.minionnation.net

I can’t wait to see the li’l fellas interact with Napoleon.  That should be a hoot… Minions hits theaters July 10, 2015.  Banana!

Off the Shelf: DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology 2015

DC Essential GN(I’m gonna skip the usual outline of OtS reviews, as this book isn’t a series, but a guide.  Bon Appetit!)

“Where do I start reading?”  Heck honey, if I knew that, I’d be famous.  Because everyone has their own ideas of where the best place to begin actually begins.  And there are so freakin’ many titles to choose from, how could any one person know it all?

Well, stop breathing into a paper bag.  DC Comics has done all the hard work for you.  Up to this year, at least.  From absolutely FOB (Fresh Onto Books) newbie to die-hard fan looking for his or her next big favorite, if it’s DCU, it’s here.  From your Constantine obsession (just me?) to the comix that are kid-approved for the youngsters in your midst, if you’re looking for what to read, and in what order, you’ve hit paydirt. Though this book isn’t geared to fans of Gotham, Arrow or The Flash, it’s definitely got tons of stuff for anyone who love the shows and wants to understand all the Easter Eggs that the shows throw into every episode.  There’s even a section called “From Page to Screen”, for TV/movie/gaming fans that haven’t made the leap to comics yet. (Note: check out iZombie.  You’re welcome.)

Seventh Son images and press release

seventh son onesheet“Seventh son of a seventh son…” Yeah, I’ve heard that one. I’ve also heard a whole lot of other Iron Maiden.  (I also happen to love Sheena Easton’s “You Could Have Been With Me”, another reference to this mythicall bit of overbreeding.  I’m a mystery wrapped in an enigma.)

But the film Seventh Son will take that idea out of vinyl and onto celluloid.  Swords and sorcery commence!  Here’s the synopsis:

In a time of enchantments when legends and magic collide, the sole remaining warrior of a mystical order (Oscar® winner Jeff Bridges) travels to find a prophesized hero born with incredible powers, the last Seventh Son (Ben Barnes). Torn from his quiet life as a farmhand, the unlikely young hero embarks on a daring adventure with his battle-hardened mentor to vanquish a dark queen (Julianne Moore) and the army of supernatural assassins she has dispatched against their kingdom.

Dragons?  Could Kit Harrington be there too?  Of course! Read on for the full details, and check out these pics…

The Ghastly Awards: 2014 Best of Horror Comics nominees announced!

ghastly awards 2014 noms partialWhat’s award season without awards? Nothing, I tell ya.  So want to know what was top-shelf in horror comics last year?  Take a gander at the list of Ghastly Award nominees.  Afterlife with Archie, Crossed: Badlands, Nailbiter, Rachel Rising, The Strain…yeah, you know those would be around.  Just like the nods to Joe Hill, Terry Moore, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Ben Templesmith and Francesco Francavilla.

But that’s just the start.  From issues at the stores to chapters on the Web, from writers to colorists to letterers, the Ghastlies have collected a very good group of top-notch talent.  Personally, I was surprised at how much I liked the Grimm Tales of Terror (great Urban Legend stories), as well as God Is Dead: Book of Acts (like American Gods?  You’ll dig this.)

Here’s where you come in.  Wanna help pick a winner?  Fan votes determine who gets the Ghastly for Best Horror Comic Cover! Winners will be announced March 1st, 2015.  Fans and creators can vote straight from the Ghastlies website: www.ghastlyawards.com.

Congratulations to all the nominees!

[Note: I’m a Ghastly Award judge, but needed to share the noms anyway.  Because if you like horror, you’ll want to read these.  Trust me.]

Amy Poehler receives Hasty Pudding’s Woman of the Year award

Love the Hasty Pudding Awards. They seem like a hoot, and all the recipients are so up for the game.

What’s the Hasty Pudding Awards? They’re two awards — Woman of the Year and Man of the Year — presented by the Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals. They go way back. Like, 1795 way back. The awards only go back as far as 1951, but in 1961 Jane Fonda came out to accept hers…which was not expected. And actors receiving the awards have been coming to Pudding to join in the fun ever since.

A big congratulations to Amy Poehler! Check out the pics, and read on for the full press release!

Off the shelf — Mind the Gap Vol. 1: Intimate Strangers

mind the gap cover

Nutshell:  Mind the Gap is the kind of damn-near perfect comic series that makes you want to stop random people on the street and shout “read this!  READ THIS!” But orange jumpsuits and straight jackets aren’t my kind of fashion choices.  Writer Jim McCann and artists Esquejo and Oback come together and really deliver the goods.  Have I said read this yet?  Because really; read this. Grade: A+

Story: Ellis Peterssen is out of her mind.  I mean literally.  She was in an accident and is now in a coma.  But in-between life and death she’s able to see what’s going on around her body, and she can move around to try to figure out what happened and why.  But she’s not the only one in-between.

Thoughts: Everyone has a series or graphic novel that they keep meaning to read, but never get around to; Mind The Gap was mine.  No longer.  Intimate Strangers hooked me from the get-go, with its combination of suspense, mysteries (can’t say it’s just one) and characterization.  MTG is a rare bird; the kind of story that anyone can get into and enjoy.  Plus, there are cliffhangers and WTF moments that must have driven issue-by-issue readers absolutely batshit while they waited for the next piece of the puzzle.  I almost feel guilty enjoying the ride in one chunk.  Almost.  But then I got to page 158, and here I am right with everyone else.  NOOOOO!  Don’t leave me like this!  [Note: not to worry, as Volumes 2 and 3 are also available.  Sweet.] Continue reading

Off the Shelf — Battlestar Galactica Volume 2: The Adama Gambit

BSG

Nutshell: It’s great to see the classic gang together again! But I wish the way the characters think would also be brought to the 21st century. Athena is still “the little woman”, and that should be embarrassing to modern writers. But apparently not around here.  BSG: TAG left me wishing that Dynamite had let it’s writers dig past the TV show basics and into real character depth.  Grade: C+

Story:  Athena has the con, but it’s a long way from a boring night shift.  Adama and the gang think they’ve finally found earth.  But not if the Cylons can help it.  Boxey finds there’s really no place to just be a kid, until Adama helps him out.  And Baltar sees things a bit differently than the rest of the folks in the Colonies.  But you’d guess that, wouldn’t you?

Thoughts: In BSG: TAG, the issues, whether a one shot or arc, feel like the old series. This reboot is obviously created by folks who loved the series. Gotta say it’s good to see the ol’ gang. The triangle helmets, felderkarb, and man-whore Starbuck. It’s all back. Even Muffit! Always wanted a mutant looking robotic space dog.

The art is well done, but nothing spectacular.  Pretty but not awe-inspiring.  (Let’s face it; sci-fi art has had the bar set with Saga, Trillium, Prophet, et al.) Plus, with the lettering?  The bright turquoise letters signifying computer-speak is tough to see on my Kindle. A shade or two darker would have been perfect. Kudos for the idea though. Differentiating between who’s where and how characters are hearing others by tweaking dialogue bubbles? Always a thumbs-up.

Then there are the stories.  Yes, they have that great TV show vibe.  But they could have done so much more with this reboot.  Seriously, Adama considers stepping down AND DOESN’T EVEN THINK ABOUT ATHENA AS AN OPTION? Oh wait – is this 1978? Are these re-prints of issues printed during the show’s run?  Nope.  It’s just that sexist.  What could have been handled by a single panel — or even bubble of dialogue — is tossed aside.  Le sigh.

Love the cover gallery!  Especially since they’ve included stuff like the #6 cover by Chris Eliopoulos. Li’l Starbuck & Li’l Cylon playing Atari. Adorable! In fact, all of his “Calvin and Hobbes” covers are fantastic. (Ditto Ken Haeser’s kid covers. Dying for a print of his #12 “toaster love” variant.)

Subscribe or Shelve:  If you’re a fan of Old School BSG, this will bring back memories.  But unless you’re a young’un that isn’t up for much more than the threat of violence or big “boom” panels?  There’s more riveting stuff out there.

Publication 411: Collects (Classic) Battlestar Galactica #6-12, and Battlestar Galactica Annual 2014. Hit shelves January 20th, 2015.

[NOTE: I received a copy of this title pre-publication via Netgalley.  I received no compensation for my review. Feldercarb!]
