Baltimore musicians Mobtown Moon do Pink Floyd

thumb_mobtown-moon_logoblue

As a huge fan of the Floyd, I was excited to see this in my press in-box.  Local musicians and Pink Floyd music?  Sounds groovy.  Given the thriving music scene here in Balmer, I’m thinking this will be worth a listen.  I may even get up off it and head up to Goucher to see ’em live.  Shop local, listen local; it’s all good.

And I’m also hoping for a Mobtown Moon performance at Mobtown Ballroom.  Seems like a good fit.

BALTIMORE, Dec. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Baltimore musicians are reimagining classic Pink Floyd with a huge arts project entitled Mobtown Moon. The uniquely Baltimore-led musical collaboration and Floyd tribute enlists dozens of musicians from different musical genres to celebrate the upcoming 40th anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon with concerts and a recording.

Unlike the many note-for-note cover projects of Floyd in existence, Mobtown Moon features a compelling new arrangement of instruments, rhythms, and sounds expected to please longtime Floyd fans and raise a new audience for the classic rock recording. This iteration highlights the sheer beauty and depth of the album’s songs, taking them out of their stadium-rock context and focusing on their well-crafted lyrics and intense emotional content.

Mobtown Moon is the brainchild of pianist/vocalist and former Baltimore City Paper columnist Sandy Asirvatham and award-winning singer-songwriter ellen cherry. “Smalltimore,” as the city is sometimes called, is large enough to support many styles of music, but small enough to spark cross-collaboration. Their memorable duet on “Breathe” illustrates the eclectic, genre-defying approach guiding the project.

The two introduced Mobtown Moon with heavily attended events in early 2012. In a town known for Poe and Mencken, but better known for Blue crabs, The Wire and “Honfest,” it was downright fashionable to hold an early fundraiser in a rowhouse setting. A six-week crowdfunding campaign at IndieGoGo raised nearly $6,000 before a foundation grant and other contributions took the pool of funds up several notches.

The album Mobtown Moon will be released digitally in March. Physical copies go on sale in April. In 2013, the artists will offer satellite shows in surrounding cities, and on September 28, the full ensemble performs at Kraushaar Auditiorium at Goucher College in Baltimore County, Maryland.

The cast of about 70 participating artists demonstrates the breadth and depth of the Baltimore music scene. The project enticed Baltimore Choral Arts Society, led by venerated conductor Tom Hall, and Poulenc Trio bassoonist Bryan Young. Rock guitarist/vocalist Cris Jacobs of jam-band The Bridge is featured along with rap and jazz artists. The final track, “Eclipse,” combines the powerful harmonizing of folk rock trio We’re About 9 and a children’s choir from OrchKids. (Several of these children sang with Roger Waters at Washington, D.C.’s Verizon Center in a 2012 performance of The Wall.)

Non-artists are also involved. Dozens of people contributed recordings of random urban sounds that are layered into the album tracks.

Mobtown Moon is an artistic, educational and community outreach endeavor under the wing of the 501(c)(3) arts organization Fractured Atlas. For details visit www.mobtownmoon.com and click on “Support Local Baltimore Music.”

Hobbit music? The Fellowship has you covered.

OGLIO RECORDS IN ELVEN LANDS

Okay, color me geeky but I had to share this press release.  Music inspired by Hobbits?  INTRIGUED.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 27 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Oglio Records (http://oglio.com/the-fellowship-in-elven-lands-second-edition) is proud to announce the release of music inspired by the feature film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, IN ELVEN LANDS – The Fellowship (www.inelvenlands.com).

IN ELVEN LANDS – The Fellowship is truly an authentic musical reconstruction, inspired by the Myths and Poetry of Professor J.R.R. Tolkien and performed by THE FELLOWSHIP.

The Fellowship performs on an all-acoustic array of ancient and modern instruments, singing songs in Sindarin, Quenya, Anglo-Saxon and Modern English. The result of their labor is IN ELVEN LANDS — the fully realized music of an ancient, lost civilization. This digitally re-mastered Second Edition features previously unreleased material and entirely new performances, including a song by J.R.R. Tolkien, plus an entirely new song with lyrics by one of the foremost Tolkien linguists, and a 50-Page digital booklet that gives you a glimpse into the ancient text of the Tir Im Psalter.

First conceived in 1992, IN ELVEN LANDS-The Fellowship applies the techniques of forensic musicology to discover what the music of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Middle-earth” may have sounded like. After years of research, a group of musicians began recording on Boxing Day of 1998, a journey that would take them more than seven years. After two years of recording, the band began referring to itself as “The Fellowship.” The name stuck.

Oglio Records Founder and CEO Carl Caprioglio noted, “Oglio Records has enjoyed a long history with the creative team of Carvin Knowles and Adam Pike. We have produced many projects together but this one is special as it really comes from a true love, affection and respect for J.R.R. Tolkien’s work. I am proud and excited to be involved with their latest collaboration.”

If you’re interested, you can buy it on iTunes.

Aaaand the track listing:

1. Tir Im; 2. The Longbottom Leaf; 3. The Silver Bowl; 4. The Man in the Moon; 5. A Verse to Elbereth Gilthoniel; 6. Elo Elleth; 7. Beware the Wolf; 8. Orome: Lord of the Hunt; 9. Creation Hymn; 10. GIVEAWAY: two tickets to Codebreaker at AMC Georgetown!

Layout 1 (Page 1)

Free movies.  Who doesn’t love that?  Well, movie haters.  But who cares about them?  I’ve been asked to give away a pair of tickets (courtesy of the groovy & generous folks at Harrington Park Press) to a very limited engagement of Codebreaker, a docu-drama about the man who turned the tide of WWII…only to be persecuted for his homosexuality by his country.  Here’s the synopsis:

Hero. Genius. Outcast. Alan Turing was a brilliant mathematician whose codebreaking skills helped Great Britain decipher the naval enigma code and turn the tide of World War II. For his pioneering work in developing the first algorithms and early computing functions, he is widely regarded as the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. But instead of being honored by his country, he was persecuted for his honesty, and prosecuted for being gay. This is the heartfelt and inspiring story of Turing’s life and his legacy.  http://www.turingfilm.com/

When I say limited engagement, I mean one night only y’all.  Tickets are on sale through Fandango.com, but how about a free pair?  Thought so.

How?  Just send me an e-mail at denise@atomicfangirl.com with the subject title CODEBREAKER.  I’ll pick an e-mail at random (which means I’ll grab my dusty D&D dice and pick whatever number rolls up.)

Here’s the when & where:

Washington, DC – One Night Only

Thursday, December 6, 7:30 PM

AMC Loews Georgetown 14

3111 K St NW, Washington, DC 20007

Oh, one final thing; if you nab the pair of tickets, you’ve got a guaranteed in.  But seating once inside the theater is first-come/first-served, so make sure to get there early enough to grab a decent seat for you and your Significant Movie Other.

So gimme an e-mail, and good luck!

TONS of new Les Miz images!

I usually tend to shy away from too much publicity for a film I’m dying to see.  But with Les Misérables, I can’t help myself.  I know the musical so well — it’s my favorite Broadway/West End show ever-ever — so I love seeing how the filmmakers are bringing these scenes to the big screen.

From the Universal Pictures info:

Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe that is still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 28th year.

Set against the backdrop of 19th -century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the endurance
of the human spirit.

And the basics from IMDb, for those who are still relatively new to the story:

In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever.

So without any further ado, here are a ton of new images from Les Misérables; look for it in theaters on Christmas Day.

Wanna meet Bruce Campbell? Hell yeah you do!

EvilDead2013Poster

Okay, so maybe I haven’t been the biggest Evil Dead remake fan in the world.  Alright I’ll say it; I’ve been scared they’ll frak it up.  But they’ve got a contest that has me doing the happy all over the house.  Which is a good thing, aside from all the mess.

IGN.com is holding a “Meet Bruce Campbell” contest!  Yeah, you read that right.  Just head to their Facebook page (oh, and don’t forget to “Like” it, y’all) & tell them why you’re the biggest Bruce fan out there…and you just may get lucky.

Everybody wins though; they’ve got a teaser trailer up for everyone who likes their FB page (it’s on @EvilDead too, btw.)  The winner of the contest will be the first one to see the official Red Band trailer, but honestly?  After seeing the teaser trailer, I’M ALL IN Y’ALL.  The FX looks butt-kickin’, there’s some seriously creepy cinematography, and there’s the gang of (idiots) young’uns ready to stupidly read from the Book of the Dead.  Ahh, short-lived youth.

So pack your bags, time to head to the woods y’all.  April 12, 2013.  Don’t worry about packing sunscreen; you won’t be alive long enough.

Lettermen Mike and Sully in Monsters University

The poster for Disney-Pixar’s Monsters University is out — and it’s adorable. Love the used books, and how the lettermen’s jacket fits Mike right around his eyeball.

See?

Get ready to head back to (monster) school June 21, 2013.  Lettermen’s jacket optional but highly encouraged.

Review-a-palooza: Life of Pi & Rise of the Guardians

My most recent reviews from Geek for e.  As always, clicky on the hyperlinked title for the full review!

Movie Review: Life of Pi

Many have said that the bestseller Life of Pi would be impossible to film.  In addition to the story itself, it deals with the three things directors loathe to work with; children, animals and water.  But Ang Lee pick up the gauntlet and the result is a movie of awe-inspiring beauty that may not touch on everything the book has to say, but is instead a beautifully shot tale of one boy’s struggle to survive and keep his sanity and personal faith intact.

Pi Patel is a man from India that moved to Canada as a youth.  But getting to Canada was an ordeal, and when a writer (Rafe Spall, Prometheus) comes to hear Pi’s story in the hope of religious awakening, Pi tells a story of shipwreck, savagery and survival.  And a tiger that shares the lifeboat with him.  Yeah, a tiger.

What’s really breathtaking is that the bulk of Life of Pi rests on the shoulders of Suraj Sharma, a young man who makes his acting debut in this movie.  As most of the film is a two-man show — with one man being a very large Bengal tiger — that’s a ballsy move on Lee’s part, but Sharma carries the day, delivering a performance that is heartbreaking, uplifting and completely believable.

Movie Review: Rise of the Guardians

“The boogeyman is gonna getcha if you don’t watch out!” Well, he may also win the day if you don’t believe in the warm happy mythologies of childhood, so you’d better get with the happy Easter, Christmas, dreamtime and tooth-under-pillowness of it all Right Now.

Rise of the Guardians isn’t exactly a fits-all kind of film; there’s no Hanukkah Harry , no Kwanzaa Pimp or any other religious stuff that doesn’t deal with the Big J-Dog.  Then again, with Santa large and in charge on the posters, there’s no doubt what you’ll be getting in the theater, so just roll with it.  And who doesn’t love a badass Santa that sports tats and a thumb ring?

There are three other Guardians who “bring wonder, hope and dreams” to the kids of the world; the Easter Bunny, the Sandman and the Tooth Fairy.  They too get their own unique spin; EB is a boomerang-toting badass who just happens to paint eggs, the Tooth Fairy is a beautiful half-human/half-hummingbird with an ability to multitask, and Sandman is a rolly-polly ball of adorable that could be the most powerful of them all.  But when Pitch — otherwise known as The Boogeyman — threatens the world with his own brand of darkness, another Guardian is tapped to rise up and lend a hand.  And so it comes to be that the new Guardian is…Jack Frost?  He’s just as baffled as the other Guardians as to why he was chosen.  Don’t worry though, all will be revealed in good time.  And it’s definitely a good time.

Getting warm & fuzzy over Warm Bodies

I saw a teaser trailer for this film last week at the Breaking Dawn Part 2 screening, and have been in a fangirl squee mode ever since. Zombies?  Zombies becoming self-aware?  That’s also a comedy?  With John Malkovich and Rob Corddry (Childrens Hospital) along for the ride? Yes, please.

Warm Bodies is based on the book of the same name by Isaac Marion.  It’s definitely got a zombified Romeo & Juliet vibe to it, and the IMDb description only serves to cement my notion:

After a zombie becomes involved with the girlfriend of one of his victims, their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.

Now there are some images up, and I must share.  Well, as the images are all the same character (that’d be the main zombie, R — played by Beast from X-Men First Class, aka Nicholas Hoult) I’m posting one.  Tada!

Warm Bodies is scheduled to open February 1st, 2013.  Just in time for Valentine’s Day y’all.  Awww.
