TrailerWatch – “Ouija: Origin of Evil” second trailer means more creepy kids!

unnamedOuija was a pretty but vacant bit of spooky that hinted at the start of a series.  So, naturally, a sequel is coming to town.  Or in the case of Ouija: Origin of Evil, a prequel.  How’d things get to be so scary for that piece of particleboard?  Synopsis!

It was never just a game. Inviting audiences again into the lore of the spirit board, Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a terrifying new tale as the follow-up to 2014’s sleeper hit that opened at number one. In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

Just like the original, the FX look amazing. Let’s hope  director Mike Flanagan, along with co-writer Jeff Howard (both from 2013’s Occulus) and a cast that includes Twilight‘s Elizabeth Reaser, The Strain‘s Doug Jones, and E.T.‘s Henry Thomas (all grown up now; go watch him as John Adams in Sons of Liberty) cranks things up  Ouija: Origin of Evil slips into multiplexes this Halloween.  BOO!

Awards News: 2016 Harvey Award Winners – full list!

harvey winnerIt’s that time of year kiddies; time to see who nabbed Harvey Awards! The nominee slate was pretty amazing, so it’s no surprise that the winners are top-notch.

Saga led the night with four wins, and March: Book Two grabbed two.  For me, it was lovely to see some of my personal favorites nab Harveys: Bloom County (for it’s fantastic, and oh-so-welcome comback), Battlepug (a lovely sendoff to the series, though Mike Norton said they’ll be back, and I hope so), Usagi Yojimbo, Lumberjanes, and of course, March: Book Two, and Saga.

Not a bad Saturday night at Baltimore Comic-Con.  Read on for the full list of winners.  Congratulations to all!

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” got the Flux Machine treatment, and it’s glorious.

Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children onesheetMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is the start of a very cool series of YA books, and a film adaptation is headed our way very soon.  As it’s officially September, I wanted to share some spooky goodness.  What?  It’s Fall.  Almost.  Kinda.  I’ll just be over here drinking my iced pumpkin spice latte…

Flux Machine, Tumblr artist extraordinare, has made some amazing GIFs of the upcoming film adaptation.  They’re really gorgeous, and get that sepia-toned otherness down pat.  Here’s just a taste.  Gorgeous, right?

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Kicks!

kicks onesheetOoh ooh ooh – you guys!  This one sounds pretty groovy.  “This one” meaning Kicks, and I’ve got passes.  But don’t take my enthusiasm. Peep the trailer and…synopsis!

In director Justin Tipping’s feature debut Kicks, nothing is as simple as it seems. 15-year-old Brandon longs for a pair of the freshest sneakers that money can buy; assuming that merely having them on his feet will help him escape the reality of being poor, neglected by the opposite sex and picked on by everyone — even his best friends. Working hard to get them, he soon finds that the titular shoes have instead made him a target after they are promptly snatched by local hood, Flaco. Seemingly the embodiment of menace, Flaco harbors complexities of his own that will be revealed when Brandon goes on a mission to retrieve his stolen sneakers with his two best friends in tow. Boasting a strong ensemble cast, and featuring a memorable lead performance by newcomer Jahking Guillory, the film transcends a deceptively traditional hero’s journey to deliver an entertaining and sobering look at the realities of inner-city life, the concept of manhood and the fetishization of sneaker culture. Visually and thematically rich, with an amazing soundtrack of both hip-hop classics and Bay Area favorites, Kicks creates an authentic and original portrait of a young man drowning in the expectations of machismo.

Ensemble casts, coming-of-age film, a killer soundtrack, and a cinematography win at Tribeca Film Fest.  With me?

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Sully!

sully onesheetTom Hanks acting!  Clint Eastwood directing! Topical biopic happening!  Heck yeah it’s time for Awards Season Onslaught.  And I’ve got passes for Sully, so you can check out all the Hanks goodness for yourself.  Synopsis!

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger (Hanks) glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard.  However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

I remember hearing about this, and thinking this Sully guy was a total badass.  Then feeling bad that he was getting pilloried.  So it’ll be interesting to see how they deal with all that in the film.  You in?

7 Pieces of: “The Light Between Oceans”

140672CM01B_Trp_Email_LR.pdf“So what do you wish for, then?”

Story: WWI veteran Tom (Michael Fassbender) tries to leave behind the horrors of war by becoming a lighthouse keeper.  Meeting and falling in love with the beautiful, spirited Isabel (Alicia Vikander) starts to turn his life around. Until one miscarriage after another plague the couple. A baby that washes ashore seems like the answer to their prayers. But baby Lucy’s real mum is out there, somewhere…

Genre I’d put it in: Kleenex grabber

Remake, Sequel, Based-On, or Orignal: based on M.L. Stedman’s 2012 novel of the same name.

Gotta say: Fassbender rocks the 1918 haircut-n-mustache look. Nails it, in fact.  And if I had a moment in Vikander’s gorgeous turn-of-the-20th-Century lace & embroidery?  I still wouldn’t be able to fit in ’em, but a gal can dream.

Oh, the movie?  It’s just as lovely as Isabel’s outfits.  Wide shots of the lighthouse at sea are so picture-perfect I dream of having them as my desktop image.  Cinematographer Adam Arkapaw won the American Society of Cinematographer’s Spotlight Award for his work on 2015’s Macbeth, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he got recognition for his work here too.  Director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) uses his skill at the slow-build to paint a picture of a perfect marriage slowly coming unraveled by a horrible secret one is forced to keep for the love of the other.  Fassbender’s Tom is a good guy who’s SOP is doing the right thing.  But when Isabel slowly breaks down after her miscarriages (OMG it was probably Rh factor incompatibility…but nobody knew back then) he’s torn between doing the right thing, and doing the right thing by her. His paladin definitely feels the sting of guilt, and it consumes him.

And these two actors are absolutely breathtaking in their roles. From their meet cute to their adorable, beautifully shot honeymoon phase, to their literally storm tossed dark night of their souls, Vikander and Fassbender are marvelous.  And while Fassbender’s makes Tom’s inner war seem easy to convey (and with those layers, it’s definitely master-level acting), it’s Vikander’s devastated Isabel that does much of the emotional heavy lifting here.  It’s amazing to know that in real life she’s never had a child; her scenes where Isabel miscarries could pull blood from a stone.

And I’d be amiss if I didn’t mention the other mother in the room; as Lucy’s biological mother Hannah, Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardner) had me torn.  As much as I loved Tom and Isabel, Weisz’s Hannah is a woman trying to stay strong, but failing.  It’s a performance that could have been simply pitiful, but there’s a backbone in it that lifts it above the usual maudlin weeper. Sure, there are times in this film that feel a bit too tailor-made for tissues.  But the stellar cast and beautiful scenery lets those scenes flow nicely with the rest.

This film is one of those that is a perfect jumping point for heavy conversation after the film.  What’s right?  Whose version of right should be the correct one?  What does it take to let go, or to hang on?  And of course the ideas of PTSD after World War I.  I want more movies about/set around WWI.  I want more movies as delicately lovely as this one.  Hopefully Oceans will see the start of a trend in both these areas.

#Protip: Vikander joined the cast because she’d always been a fan of Fassbender’s work.  After meeting during this film, they became fans of each other; they’ve been dating since 2014. #adorable

ash 4 prez“Do I save her ’cause I should? Or ’cause she’s hot?”

Oh yeah baby. Ash is coming back, and he’s…well, the same Ash we’ve always known.  In this first look at Season 2 of Ash vs. Evil Dead, we get to see that Ash is loving live in Jacksonville.  But we all know that can’t last, because he’s Ash for cryin’ out loud.  And the gang’s back, including Lucy Lawless as the mysterious (and totally badass) Ruby. We also get to meet Ash’s pops, played by none-other than The Six Million Dollar Man‘s Lee Majors.  Groovy, baby!

Ash vs. Evil Dead slices through deadites and bullshit on October 2nd, 2016.  Groovy, baby.

PS: check out Ash 4 President.  Because Ash is a man we should all get behind.  Mostly because if you stand in front of him, you’ll probably get yourself killed by accident.
