“Nomadland”

“I’m not homeless, I’m houseless… Don’t worry about me, okay?”

Story: Fern is 61 years old, and picks up seasonal work at the local Amazon warehouse. She lives out of her van, because the company tract house she used to live in closed down…along with the gypsum plant in her all but empty town of Empire, Nevada. So she decides to head to an RTR (Rubber Tramp Rendezvous) to check out the nomadic lifestyle, and meet some of the people who call their vehicles home.

Genre I’d put it in: Dramas That Feel Like Documentaries

Remake, Sequel, Based-On, or Original: Based on the nonfiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder

Gotta say: I wanted to both sit with the after-effects of this film for a while, and immediately tell everyone that they needed to see it. So here I am, in my jim-jams, tapping out a review that I hope will tempt you into spending two hours on the road with these characters and people.

But first, a bit about the nomads of this film. These folks aren’t of the “hashtag VanLife” persuasion. No social media influencers here. These are individuals that for one reason or another – underemployment, loan debts, disgust with big business, or one bad day during a horrible recession – took to the roads to live as Grapes of Wrath-esque migrants. They move from job to job, going where their longing takes them, and where they can find work. When the stars align, both meet. Their lives are hauntingly beautiful, breathtakingly minimalist, and while they can be filled with happiness, it’s not an easy life one would pick on a whim. This is a whole world that I figured was probably out there – I’ve always heard about folks traveling the country and their RVs and such – but it’s still so new to me. It’s a mix of hope, and heartbreak. It touched my soul. With me? Cool.

TrailerWatch – WTH is Disney’s “Cruella” doing?

I love Emma Stone. She’s fantastic. I’ve been a fan ever since Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. But guuuurl, WHUT.

As beautifully shot and staged as this trailer is? I can’t get past the fact that this is one of the worst, most despicable villains in the Disney canon. Cruella KILLED DOGS AND WORE THEIR SKINS. She wanted to murder puppies for yet another coat. How in the world is this going to be a story we empathize with?

I’m guessing they’re going with a Joker-esque vibe. But I doubt children – the main target for 101 Dalmatians, and so most likely the vast majority of viewers – will get this film’s high aspirations. I’m guessing this film will either water the legend allllll the way down, or become nightmare fuel.

Cruella hits theaters (and probably Disney+ as a premium release) May 28th, 2021. *shrugs*

Elsewhere Review: Moser Roth Privat Chocolatiers’ Dark Chili Chocolate Bar

Originally published on A Green Man Review!

Looking for something a bit different for this year’s Winter Chocolate Binge this month? How about something a bit…spicy? No, not that kind of spicy, I’m gonna keep it clean in this review y’all. This chocolate brand, made “exclusively for” Aldi, this bar is actually five smaller bars, each wrapped individually. It’s nice portion control, though this chocolate is tasty enough that stopping at one mini-bar will be a test of your willpower.

Screening/Virtual Pass-palooza: “Judas and the Black Messiah”!

UPDATE: apparently you can’t customize your experience through these passes. From the studio rep – “They CAN customize their experience – the movie is available all three ways – but the Fandango codes are only valid for in-theater regular shows (just like using Fandango to buy a ticket regularly). Sorry if that was confusing. Fandango only operates one of those ways, but people who aren’t comfortable going to a regular showing can choose to see the film another way (on their own).” So sorry. 😦

NOTE: Before hitting the multiplex, please consider the health risks involved with participating in group gatherings. Take very good care of yourselves – I wanna see you on the other side.

Let’s get 2021 started y’all! Because I’ve got passes for a film that looks really cool. You can even customize your viewing experience: in-theater, streaming on HBO Max, or book a private screening with any of the major theater chains open near you! But first, synopsis!

FBI informant William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield) infiltrates the Illinois Black Panther Party and is tasked with keeping tabs on their charismatic leader, Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). A career thief, O’Neal revels in the danger of manipulating both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons). Hampton’s political prowess grows just as he’s falling in love with fellow revolutionary Deborah Johnson (Dominique Fishback). Meanwhile, a battle wages for O’Neal’s soul. Will he align with the forces of good? Or subdue Hampton and The Panthers by any means, as FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen) commands?

Ready? Let’s go! (Or stay in!)

Awards Season: Golden Globes nominees announced!

It’s that time of year y’all! Time to check out the nominees for the Golden Globes! And while 2020 was definitely not a regular year in terms of hitting the multiplex? There are a slew of excellent films, performances, and creators worth celebrating.

Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Hamilton, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Sound of Metal… All incredible, and I’m so glad to see these films – and several of their artists – receive attention. Though I would have liked to have seen more love for Lovecraft Country, and some recognition go to The Boys, I May Destroy You, Mrs. America…

But enough blathering. Scroll through the GG’s pages of nominees and see for yourself. There are a few films and shows that I really want to get my eyes on but haven’t yet (Looking at you, The United States vs. Billie Holiday and Mank), so feel free to use these nominees as a jumping off point for your own viewing pleasure!

The 78th annual Golden Globes will be broadcast on February 28th, 2021.

In Queue Review – “A Century of Black Cinema”

Genre: Documentary
Release Date: 2003
Where I Watched: Amazon Prime

This documentary popped up in my Prime queue, and I jumped on it. Like the incredible Horror Noire, Century takes a look at the sadly neglected history of black cinema, as well as the creators, performers, and back stories. From short silent films of the early 1900s to the films of Spike Lee, it’s a tribute to the talent and creativity of these artists.
