Elsewhere Review – Specially Selected Blue Cheese Stuffed Olives

Originally posted over at The Green Man Review!

Olives. Mmm, olives. There isn’t an olive I don’t love. From tangy Moroccan lemon-cured to tiny French dry-cured, I love them, pits and all. Nowadays I can’t get to my favorite Greek grocery for a fun mix of flavor, but Aldi stepped up their olive game by coming out with olives stuffed with blue cheese. Once again, I’m in love.

These green drops of heaven came out at the same time Aldi debuted their jalapeno and garlic stuffed olives…but if you’re ever lucky enough to stumble upon these flavors, notice something? Yeah. The blue cheese ones are typically gone, or low in supply. That’s because folks like me who are in the know have already snagged ‘em. #sorrynotsorry Not that I dislike the other two flavors, but I do have a type. And that type is cheesy.

The photo is a bit misleading, however. Any time I’ve picked up a jar, there’s a cloudy tinge to the liquid, thanks to the cheese getting a bit too friendly with the brine, causing a slight breakdown. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of cheese in each olive. But there’s also cheese in the liquid. Like a dirty martini? Try adding some of this cloudy magic to your vodka or gin. You are most welcome.

As for the olives themselves, they’re surprisingly less salty than I’d expected. Brine and cheese would typically make for a pucker-inducing tang, but these are mellow. There’s a smooth umami taste to these bites, which makes it hard to stop at just one or two. These olives are made in Greece, and obviously the folks packing them know what they’re doing. The blend of salt, cheese, and olive are perfect.

As I’ve mentioned, these help make a fantastic martini; don’t forget to save that precious liquid, even after the olives have gone.  But these yummy treats also go great with cheese sandwiches, or a charcuterie board if you’re still at the “I’m making lockdown fancy!” phase of quarantine. (Me? I’ve stopped wearing pants. But do you.) Bon appétit!

Elsewhere Reviews – Huang Fei Hong Spicy Crispy Peanut

I’ve been inordinately lazy of late. But I have been writing stuff. Er, eating under the guise of reviewing. Boom – originally published over at The Green Man Review!

Peanuts are my jam. Okay, my butter. My soup. My sauce. My everything. *cues up Barry White*  Any way I can get ‘em, I get ‘em. I especially love a touch of spice to my peanuts, so hello Huang Fei Hong! These babies are choc-a-block with deliciously crunchy Szechuan peppercorns, and sliglighty chewy dried chilis, making this the perfect bar nibble.

Folks with a low tolerance for spice may find these a bit too much, but for folks like me who love a bit of zing? They’re perfect. More spiced than spicy at first, but they get to a slow burn that warmed my tongue and had me reaching into the packet again and again. I’m actually still digging in as I write this. Give me that sting, sweet baby. Yeah, that’s it.

Szechuan spicy peanuts (aka Mala Fried Peanuts) are a lovely snack, but can be used as a topping for peanut noodles, lo mein, pad thai, or any other noodle dish that you’d like to give a nutty kick to. If there’s any left in my packet after I finish writing this – highly unlikely but let’s pretend – they’d make a delicious topping for rice, perhaps with a bit of nori and the shredded veg of your choice. I’m thinking cucumber and pickled carrot myself. Or set a bowl next to a cheese, fruit, or meat plate, and let yourself go nuts.*cues badum-tish*

Vegan by ingredients, this is a treat you can whip out when friends start to come back around after The Virus Troubles. Or you could buy some and send packets to your friends for a virtual happy hour, taking screenshots as proof of who’s got the spicy and who needs that milk to wash it all down. I’m not judging, but if you’re able to enjoy a spicy tingle that is in no way sexual (quit it, Internet Rule 34)? Dig in. But buy twice as much as you think you’ll want. Pro-tip from me to you.

TrailerWatch – “TRAIN TO BUSAN PRESENTS: PENINSULA”

It’s been four years since the excellent Train to Busan, and if you think those zombies have taken a break…you’re in for a bloody surprise. And a bloody good time, if this trailer is any indication. If Busan was Snowpiercer with zombies, this new film is Escape From New York with, well…you dig. Synopsis!

Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances.

Peninsula carries Busan‘s story of the zombie outbreak in South Korea and introduces a new cast of characters in a new location. Director Yeon Sang-ho revisits the world of Busan and the animated Seoul Station in this action packed horror joint, and I can’t wait.

Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula is scheduled to invade theaters in America August 12th, 2020. Get ready.

Streaming News – IndieWire looks at how the problematic film “The Help” is trending, offers other films to stream

If you’re interested in watching films that are made by/star people of color, there are great films out there…and ones that may have great stars but aren’t great messages. Indiewire has interviewed critics and creators, gathering together a bunch of great films to choose from. So try a few you haven’t seen yet! Perhaps a few from the Criterion Collection, while they’re free to stream?

I’d like to add Shudder’s Horror Noire to this list; it’s a fantastic look at films that need more love, as well as the history of black horror cinema. Definitely check it out if you can. (I believe they have a 30 day free trial. Just a thought.)

From the article:

‘Perez worried that a surge in popularity for “The Help” would extend to other “racial reconciliation” films like the Sandra Bullock-starring “The Blind Side.” The writer added, “Do not watch the fucking ‘Help’ right now…literally anything but ‘The Help,’” and offered better Netflix streaming options for the current moment including three Ava DuVernay projects: The Oscar nominated documentary “13TH,” Best Picture nominee “Selma,” and Emmy winner “When They See Us.”’

Con News: Small Press Expo shutters this year, will hold virtual Ignatz Awards

With so much to learn about COVID-19, I can’t say that I’m truly shocked that SPX has decided to cancel this year’s Expo…but I am sad. It’s such an incredible weekend filled with all sorts of indie, underground, and other forms of independent comic books, so losing the chance to connect with so many incredibly talented creators (and throw my money around like glitter) is definitely a bummer.

But wait – they’re going forward with their yearly Ignatz Awards!  Yep, they’re gonna hold ’em virtually, and I can’t wait for more information on how to watch the ceremony. These awards shine a light on comics and creators that many otherwise wouldn’t hear about, so I’m so happy they’ll be sharing the ceremony with everyone.

Read on for the entire message – including resources for creators during this trying time – after the jump. And see y’all next year at SPX!!!
