Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: “Booksmart”!

I’ve got passes for Olivia Wilde’s first directorial joint, and it’s looking pretty hilarious. Synopsis!

Told from a wildly original, fresh and modern perspective, BOOKSMART is an unfiltered comedy about high school best friends and the bonds we create that last a lifetime. Capturing the spirit of our times, the film is a coming of age story for a new generation.

Elsewhere Revies: TITANS’ 6.5” ‘Twice Upon A Time’ 13th Doctor Kawaii

Orignally published over at The Green Man Review!

The 13th Doctor was just made for all sorts of merch. She’s the first female Doctor, she’s got outfits easily achievable for cosplay, and her regeneration is delivers a whole lot of quotable lines – “The universe will surprise you. Constantly.” “I could show you everything if you stop being afraid of what you don’t understand.”These legs definitely used to be longer!” So I’m not surprised in the least that there’s a new figurine I hadn’t seen yet. And this one’s a beaut.

Review-In-A-Flash: “Tolkien”!

Sometimes I’m too drugged up on cold meds to tap out a full piece. Sometimes everything I’ve got to say about a film can be summarized in a few sentences, or stream of consciousness. So herewith, a quick-n-dirty on…Tolkien!

“Lock all this in your heart. Lock it tight, and it will be there forever. I promise.”

Before: Who doesn’t love J.R.R.? People I don’t want anything to do with, TBH. I don’t know much about him, but I do know that he developed his Middle Earth mythos while at school, and that he saw immeasurable horrors during WWI. Can’t wait. Continue reading

Blu-Ray Review: “Ghosts of Mars”

“So this is Shining Canyon? What a dump.”

Jason Stratham! With hair! Ice Cube! Natasha Henstridge! Greg Nicotero and KNB FX! This should have been an incredible genre film, so what happened? Well, it became a cult classic for many genre fans, and even though it’s messy and misses the mark at almost every turn, I can’t help but enjoy the hell out of the crazy fever-dream of a film.

With it’s blend of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Hills Have Eyes by way of Mad Max and David Cronenburg, and Carpenter’s own The Thing Carpenter completists need to check this one out. Mars is a cool little B-Movie with plenty of mayhem and action to enjoy even if the plot feels unformed and unfocused. Continue reading

TrailerWatch: “Crawl” looks 50s horror-tastic!

Gotta love those “crazy animalz help me pleeez” horror movies. From Night of the Lepus to  Day of the Animals, Lake Placid, Piranha, and let’s not forget the mack daddy, Jaws. They all have a certain 1950s monster movie vibe that’s always a good time. But Crawl looks to belly up to the bar, and gotta say I’m here for it. Synopsis!

When a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haley (Kaya Scodelario) ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father (Barry Pepper). Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears. From director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) and producers Craig Flores (300), Sam Raimi (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) and Alexandre Aja, Crawl is a nail-biting horror thriller in theatres July 12, 2019.
