#31in31 2017 – The Cell

“I came to help you.”

Story: Child psychologist Catharine Deane is able to enter the minds of comatose patients, thanks to a high-tech “Neurological Cartography and Synaptic Transfer System”. But when serial killer Carl Stargher falls into a coma-like state, the FBI asks Deane to enter the mind of the killer and find Stargher’s latest victim…before it’s too late.

Scares: Chilling imagery, especially of Stargher’s victims. Disturbing and unsettling, and quite a bit creepy.

Splat factor: Middling. Though the horror here is mostly psychological, there’s definitely some red stuff in the mindscape scenes.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Goodbye Christopher Robin!

I adore Piglet.  He’s just such a cutie.  In fact, the whole gang is adorable…but I do have a certain soft spot for that quiet, soft-spoken little guy.  And while I know that the whole Winnie The Pooh series was based on the toys A.A. Milne’s son loved, I’ve always wanted to know more.  And in Goodbye Christopher Robin we get it.  Synopsis!

GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN gives a rare glimpse into the relationship between beloved children’s author A. A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston), whose toys inspired the magical world of Winnie-the-Pooh.  Along with his mother Daphne (Margot Robbie), and his nanny Olive (Kelly Macdonald), Christopher Robin and his family are swept up in the international success of the books; the enchanting tales bringing hope and comfort to England after the First World War.   But with the eyes of the world on Christopher Robin, what will the cost be to the family?

Ready to bring your favorite well-loved stuffed animal to the theater?  Let’s go! Continue reading

#31in31 2017 – “The Void”

“You’d be surprised at the things you find, when you go looking.”

Story: Lazy, ineffectual Sheriff in Podunk, USA, is waiting out his shift when he sees a guy stumble out of the woods. So Sheriff decides to take the guy to a nearby hospital to get him looked at.  But there are a few problems; 1) the hospital is moving to a new location, so staff and resources are at a minimum, 2) Sheriff’s estranged wife works there, and 3) weird bee-suits-from-space clad people wielding huge knives start surrounding the hospital.  I’m sure everything will be just fine though!

#31in31 2017 – “Raw”/”Grave”

“Little lady’s hungry. Don’t they feed you down there?”

Story: Sweet virginal (literally) Justine is about to start Vet school! Hooray for her! But the first week hazing rituals are a bit too much for her sensibilities, especially when she’s asked to eat raw rabbit kidney. But before long she’s eating raw chicken right out of the package…wanna bet that chicken won’t sate her for long?

Scares: Lots of creepy, and a few “what next?” kinda chills.  This is a low-n-slow horror that unfolds as more of a twisted coming-of-age tale than a full-speed horrorfest. Continue reading

Scares: So many heart-in-throat moments, you may want to get your doctor’s okay before digging in.

Splat factor: Lots of blood, infection-type icky stuff, and medium-range biting/wounds. No gore per se, but tons of the ol’ ultraviolence.
