Elsewhere Info: Location Managers Guild Awards

(Originally posted on Geek for e: clicky here for that piece!)

Awards! Bet you didn’t know there were so many given out during Awards Season, did’cha? Well, I’m here to help.

Today’s the final day for submissions to the Location Managers Guild Awards. What are those, you ask?  Well, all movies need a place to film right?  I mean, you don’t want to see every single scene shot in a soundstage.  Location Managers are the people that scope out places to shoot scenes, make sure there’s adequate security (fire, police, and ambulance coverage too, if necessary), get the permits and basically do all the non-glamorous stuff so that directors, actors and the other artsy folks can do their jobs.  They’re also the folks locals interact with, so when Film & TV people shoot here in B’more?  Chances are you’ll run across a Location Manager doing his or her thang, and they’re the folks you’d talk to with any questions or concerns.

Yeah, I kinda think they’re awesome too.

Anyway, their guild is doing an awards presentation March 20th.  Gotta admit these awards were a mystery to me, but now that I know the exist?  I’m dying to find out who will win, and why.

Missed Gravity? No problem, it’s back!

image

For your consideration, a film that’s awards bait and actually riveting. Didn’t see Gravity, so you don’t know what I’m talking about? Well now, Warner Brothers thought so. So they’re bringing it back to the multiplex!

It’s gonna happen this Friday, January 17th, and it’ll probably be for a limited time. (Though if it snags any Oscars, I’m betting it will linger longer.)

Fair warning though; you may want to skip trying to smuggle in astronaut ice cream. You’ll be only too happy with having your feet on the ground during this flick. I suggest popcorn and M&Ms instead. Mmmm, popcorn.

Elsewhere Review: The Legend of Hercules

My eyes are still bleeding from the pain of having to sit through this one.

As always, feel free to clicky on the hyperlinked title for the original piece!

The Legend of Hercules: mythologically bad.

Twitview: Avoid. The stills from this film are better than the film itself. 1 out of 5

Renny Harlin harkens back to his Cutthroat Island days with The Legend of Hercules, a film so derivative and dull that I’m shocked it took me 45 minutes to want to check Candy Crush Saga.Hercules is a mish-mosh of 300, The Matrix, and Braveheart (let’s take back our kingdom y’all!), a testosterone fest too dull for even the biggest fan of bloodsport. Think Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome meets Clash of the Titans, but with no bits of humor to make it enjoyable, nor convincing storyline to make anyone care about who lives or dies.

I had high hopes for this film. A bunch of beautiful men in skirts. Not too shabby, right? Add Psychotic king and his bereaved wife, who decides to opt for a little Olympic hanky-panky. Meanwhile the heir to the throne — and Hercules’ half-brother — is a petulant wimp that couldn’t find his…purpose in life…with two hands and a road map. All of that makes for a promising hero-bent-on-revenge flick.  Ahh, empty promises.

Dick Smith to receive Lifetime Achievement Award. Because he’s awesome.

Dick Smith. (PRNewsFoto/Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild)

Dick Smith.  THE man. (PRNewsFoto/Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild)

In an alternate life I was a makeup/FX artist.  But as I have absolutely no talent in that area whatsoever, I simply fawn over those that do.  Who better than “The Godfather of Makeup”, Dick Smith?  Seriously, I have a tattered, pancake-makeup-encrusted copy of his Dick Smith’s Do-It-Yourself Monster Make-up Handbook on my bookshelf, right next to Tom Savini’s Grande Illusions.

So when I heard that Smith was getting a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, my only question was what took ’em so long?  But since the Academy Awards didn’t start honoring these artists ’til 1981 (otherwise Smith surely would have won for his work on The Exorcist, Little Big Man and The Godfather), I guess I can cut the Guild some slack.  Some.  Smith did receive an honorary Oscar in 2012, and at the Fangirl Residence there was a standing ovation from all in attendance.

FX geeks will be doubly excited about this award, as his protege Rick Baker will be the presenter.  Y’know, the 7-time Oscar winner that did that amazing transformation scene in An American Werewolf In London?  They guy that has been teasing us with Maleficent poster eeriness?  Yeah, him.

The ceremony will be held February 15th.  And I’d kill to be there.  Or at least I’d spill a ton of Karyo syrup, red food coloring and peanut butter.

Passes to the Baltimore area screening of The Legend of Hercules. By the beard of Zeus, we’ve got ’em!

hercules

Couldn’t resist that Anchorman 2 bit in the title.  Because who doesn’t love mythology?  And shirtless dudes?  Well, you do, or you wouldn’t be reading this, amirite?  So on with the show!  First off, a synopsis from our Greek Chorus of PR:

In the epic origin story THE LEGEND OF HERCULES, Kellan Lutz stars as the mythical Greek hero – the son of Zeus, a half-god, half-man blessed with extraordinary strength.  Betrayed by his stepfather, the King, and exiled and sold into slavery because of a forbidden love, Hercules must use his formidable powers to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom.  Through harrowing battles and gladiator-arena death matches, Hercules embarks on a legendary odyssey to overthrow the King and restore peace to the land.

Directed by RENNY HARLIN

Written by SEAN HOOD and DANIEL GIAT

Sounds good, right?  Kellan Lutz (that tree-climbing “monkey man” vamp from Twilight) directed by Renny Harlin (the man that put the chomp on Sam Jackson in Deep Blue Sea) should be a slam-bang good time.  So, you want passes or what?  Read on, magnificent one, read on….

Want Her passes? Er, passes to the Baltimore screening of Her? Come get some!

HER art small

Welcome, welcome, one and all, to the Awards Season awesomeness!  And to get you really into the spirit, how about passes to a film that’s sure to be nominated come Oscar time (in fact, it’s already grabbed a slew of noms & awards).  Don’t know what it’s about except for Joaquin’s amazing pornstache?  Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in Los Angeles, in the near future, “Her” follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive and unique entity in its own right. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice (Scarlett Johansson) who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. From the singular perspective of Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes “Her,” an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world.

Personally, I’m dying to see what Scarlett Johansson has done with her character — a disembodied voice from a computer — and how Spike Jonze addresses love in the modern age.  Whetted your appetite?  Read on for the how-to’s!

Elsewhere Reviews: Mandela & The Wolf of Wall Street

mandelawolf

Yaaaay — awards season!  Woot!

I.  So.  Tired.

But hey, #firstworldproblems and all that, right?  Because I’m pooped from all the films I’ve been screening.  Not to bad y’all.  But before I crack open this bottle of vino (only the best Three Buck Chuck here people), here are a couple of reviews I’ve posted on Geek for e.  As always, clicky the hyperlinked headings for the original, full, review!

Movie Review — Mandela: The Long Walk To Freedom

“You alone are small.  Your people are mighty.”

There’s no doubt that Nelson Mandela’s life was large enough to put up on the big screen.  But Mandela: The Long Walk To Freedom (based on Mandela’s memoir of the same name) feels more like a Greatest Hits album instead of a solid hit song.  There’s a whole lot to love in this film, with many top-notch performances.  But the story shoots by at light speed, stopping on nothing long enough to truly get an in-depth look at the man.  That said, it gets bonus points for not skipping over the parts of his life that were less than heroic, like his womanizing.  Mandela: The Long Walk To Freedom may not give viewers deeper insight into the man that delivered South Africa from Apartheid, but it is an extensive and fascinating look at his life, and the events that swirled around him.

For those that only know Apartheid as a word in the dictionary, Mandela is an eye-opener.  Director Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl, Bleak House) takes the ugly bits of South Africa’s past and puts them up on screen.  There’s some bright, happy times too; black areas of Johannesburg are shown filled with good people, good music and at first the idea of separation seems like nothing more than an inconvenience for Mandela and the rest of black South Africa.  Then the reality kicks in, as a man is mercilessly beaten to death in the street.  His crime?  Being black and a little bit tipsy.  Not bellierent, not loud, not even unkempt.  Just a man that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  (Which was the way it was for any black person in South Africa at that time.)  The scene is shocking and jolts you out of the pleasant earlier scenes, where Mandela the ladykiller tries — and succeeds — in wooing a woman on the dance floor.  Idris Elba (Luther, Thor) is able to shift from charming cad to heartbroken, angry friend, all the while taking you with him in every twist and turn of the world he had to navigate.

Movie Review: The Wolf of Wall Street

Coke!  Ludes!  Booze!  No, it’s not the yearly Geek for e holiday party.  It’s a slice of the 90s stockbroker lifestyle highlighted in The Wolf of Wall Street, and it’s it’s tacky, glorious excess carries on for almost three hours of hyperactive money-binging and awe-inspiring overindulgence.  The Wolf of Wall Street, with it’s beautiful views and addictive storyline will make you sad that you missed the party, and truly happy that you did.  Because really, unless Martin Scorsese is directing your life as brilliantly as he does this film — and you’ve got a guy editing the crap parts out — anyone who really lived like that back then?  Has great stories no doubt, but probably no longer has the use of all his/her faculties.  Hey, you give some you get some I guess.  But it’s a better idea to simply watch this stunner of a film and leave the real excess to folks that don’t mind the body busting (and jail time.)

The one thing you’ll need to know before, during and after this film?  That this story is true.  The details?  Maybe a little fudged, a bit blown up for Hollywood.  But Jordan Belfort , his partnerDanny Porush and their “firm” Stratton Oakmont are all the real deal.  Remember the 1987 filmWall Street?  This real-life story makes Gordon Gekko and his cronies look like altar boys.  No wonder Leonardo “King of the World” DiCaprio wanted to play Belfort.  It’s a role any actor wanting to go a little crazy would kill to play.

Movie Review — American Hustle

americanhustle

Best.  Combover.  Ever.  Really, if there’s something you need to see in the movie American Hustle, it’s Christian Bale gluing a Chia Pet to his head, and then combing the sparse, overlong wisps of hair still on his head into a coif that would have Donald Trump bowing down in awe.  But that’s the opening scene, so you definitely won’t miss it.  What about the rest of the film?  American Hustle is getting a ton of award-season buzz for good reason; it’s one of the best films this year, combining drama, thriller and old-fashion crime-caper shenanigans with laugh-out-loud moments that let off steam at just the right moments.  Yeah, like an all-star cast and the guy that directed Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter would give you anything less.

How do I love thee, American Hustle?  Lemme count the ways.  First off, there’s the crazy-cool opening credits sequence that looks like a cross between 70s Movie-of-the-week and old-school porno.  Lots of “neon” design, mustard and brown.  Groovy baby.  Then, there’s the opening scenes with cinematography that harkens back to the good old days of Hollywood storytelling (kudos to cinematographer Linus Sandgren, whose work should be tapped for Oscar consideration if there’s any justice in this world.)  A title card that simply says “Some of this actually happened”, which lets viewers know that this’ll be a ride that’ll inform and make you laugh.  The story itself, about Abscam, a moment in history that is vaguely remembered for busting politicians and giving the American people the sneaking suspicion that things going on behind-the-scenes may not be white-hat worthy.

For Hustle, director David O. Russell gathers his darlings from Silver Linings Playbook — Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence — along with The Fighter stars Christian Bale and Amy Adams.  Bale plays conman Irving Rosenfeld, who together with his mistress Sydney Prosser, happily scam people out of their hard-earned. Y’know, until they get busted by FBI agent Ritchie DiMaso (Cooper, rockin’ his best Justin Timberlake post-Mousketeer ‘do), all pin-curls and ambition.  DiMaso forces Rosenfeld and Prosser to work a sting operation for him, and so the group pulls in local politician Carmine Polito (The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner), the Mayor of Atlantic City who just wants to see his town succeed.  Throw in legalized gambling, politicians on the take, mob bosses (keep an eye out for Robert De Niro in an uncredited role as – surprise! – mob boss Victor Tellegio) and con-men who don’t like being shackled, and there’s a bunch of thrills and laughs.  Yes, laughs.  Which reminds me, a standout performance to take note of is Louis C.K. as a tired, paper-pushing FBI supervisor.  His weary, beaten-down character is given C.K.’s light touch and deadpan humor.  The result is a low-key, almost absurdist look at Government machinations and the people who live to grind it out.

Hustle’s humor relies on the initial con becoming more and more grand as DiMaso tries to bite of much more than he’s able to chew.  You can see the commendations dancing in his head as each meeting with his busted cons bring more (unintentional on their part) opportunities for busts to the table.  Bale and Adams have great chemistry, and their characters love, fight and try to weather the storm together with a fervor that makes you care for and understand these broken characters.  Lawrence has the unforgiving role of Rosenfeld’s needy shrew of a wife Rosalyn, whose voice grates and whose inability to grasp things reminds me of the SNL skit “Wake Up With Kimye”.  However, Lawrence’s Rosalyn understands who she is, strengths and weaknesses.  It’s a self-knowledge that centers the character, and as with her other roles, Lawrence delivers a fantastic performance while making it look easy.  Jeremy Renner, as a good-hearted Mayor that would do black-hearted things to help his constituents rocks a Saturday Night Fever bouffant and an earnestness that makes Polito’s trajectory absolutely heartbreaking.  You root for this man, knowing all the while that he’s going to fall.

Gotta love the retro soundtrack too.  “Horse With No Name”, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”, “Dirty Work”, “I Saw The Light”, “I Feel Love”, “Rocket Man”, “Poppa Was A Rolling Stone”…so many great songs of the era, and all used to great effect.  And let’s not forget Amy Adams’ wardrobe, with so much Halston plunging cleavage that her side-boob should be given a SAG card.  Costume designer Michael Wilkinson and lead hair stylist Katherine Gordon nail the era and it’s gritty, sparkly excess.  They even have a shout-out to “Frost & Tip”, for cryin’ out loud.  (Well, the film does deal with Jersey.)

There’s so much attention to detail in this film that Art Director Jesse Rosenthal — another Russell alum — not only brings the period to life, he reminds those of us that lived through it of things we’d forgotten.  There’s old Burger King commercials playing on the radio (“Have it yoooour way….”), velvet flocked wallpaper (shudder of recognition), ornately ugly sofas.  Oh man, it’s perfect in it’s shlock.

The climax plays true even to this day, which could be part of Hustle’s resonance; Good Guys will always go after the “little fish” because catching them is easy.  Abscam may or may not have played out like American Hustle, but in watching this film we all see a little bit of truth in this celluloid fable.
