Pull! My latest comic book reads

Yeah, it’s been a couple of months since my last comics roundup.  But I have been reading, I’ve just been too lazy to post.  There have been some seriously good things crossing these eyeballs though.  Onward!

Batman: The Long Halloween

It has Halloween in the title. It has Batman in the title. It’s also a touchstone for many fans of the Bat. Solomon Grundy! The Scarecrow! The Mad Hatter!  Naturally, I had to pick this up.  This is a great noir piece, which is a different tack than the usual Batman-ness.  But it works perfectly.  The added benefit of a holiday-themed psycho killer is a cool bit of fun that ends up being the perfect way to segue from one holiday/chapter to the next.  Brilliant exposition throughout that informs without affecting the flow of the story keeps even newbies hep to what’s going on and why you should care.

The artwork is amazing, and unsettling. Which is probably exactly what artist Tim Sale was going for.  And I love Selina Kyle looking like Death‘s Upper East Side sister.  And I’ve found another great Batman graphic novel.  Woot!

Y The Last Man: Unmanned

Alas, poor Yorick. Yeah, I love me some Scottish Play as much as the next gal, but in Y, he’s the only human survivor of a plague/Act of God/what the fuck that viciously killed any and everyone with a Y chromosome. He’s a typical slacker, but with the end of the male species, it’s all fun and nekkid happy times.

Hah — gotcha! Anyone who thinks that a world of women would be all kumbaya & crochet doesn’t know any women. Factions form, Democrats and Republicans are still at each other’s throats, and all Yorick wants to do is find his sister Hero (apparently Dad had a thing for lit), then track down his girlfriend/fiancée. Oh, did I mention that said fiancée is in Australia? And that she may not have accepted Yorick’s proposal?  Phone lines can be a bitch during the end of civilization….

The bad news is that as a series, Y, The Last Man is already wrapped. That’s also the good news, since once you start, you’re gonna want to see how it all turns out, pronto. Looking for a new fix? Grab this.

The Sandman: The Doll’s House

Easily read as a stand-alone, since this volume deals with a girl who has powers she cannot seem to control. Readers of the first volume will understand what’s going on a bit better than raw newbie, but either way it’s an interesting, layered tale.

This volume gets into the thick of the Sandman mythology, and we get to see more of The Endless and how they interact.  There’s also plenty of cleverly added exposition to keep readers in-the-know & invested. Lovely art, and the different styles add to the otherworld vibe.  And as always, Gaiman’s words wash over you like a sea of comfort, even when his words are anything but comfortable. A brilliant second volume that makes me want to jump up and grab the next one. On to volume 3….

Today’s images sneak-peek number 2: Silent House

Silent House.  A horror movie for the smarties in the room?  Quite possibly; they’ve got an indie group starring and a showing at Cannes means it’s going for the high ground.  But will it be scary?  The trailer makes me think yes, though it could be a stress-fest for those of us you that are used to slasher films telegraphing every move.

The official Web site is available in two languages — hey, this is the English-language remake of an original filmed in Uruguay — so I’ve linked to the English version for ease of access.  (Clicky here to choose the language you read for yourself.)

Feast your eyes, gloat your soul…on these pics!

Today’s images sneak-peek number 1: Detatchment

Detatchment.  Heard of it?  Me neither.  But after reading the info the studios have released, I’m kinda dying to see it:

Detachment(Tribeca Film)Release: 03/16/2012
Director Tony Kaye’s (AMERICAN HISTORY X) long-awaited film DETACHMENT stars Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody as Henry Barthes, a substitute teacher who conveniently avoids any emotional connections by never staying anywhere long enough to form a bond with either his students or colleagues. A lost soul grappling with a troubled past, Henry finds himself at a public school where an apathetic student body has created a frustrated, burned-out administration. Inadvertently becoming a role model to his students, while also bonding with a runaway teen who is just as lost as he is, Henry finds that he’s not alone in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world. Kaye has molded a contemporary vision of people who become increasingly distant from others while still feeling the need to connect. DETACHMENT features a stellar ensemble cast, including Academy Award® winner Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks, William Petersen, Bryan Cranston, Tim Blake Nelson, Lucy Liu, Blythe Danner, James Caan, and newcomers Sami Gayle and Betty Kaye.

Sounds like an “Up the Down Staircase” for a new century.  Peep the pics and enjoy!

Review-a-palooza!

Movie Review: Chronicle

Superheroes!  Zap!  Biff!  Pow!  They seem so put-together when they’re covered in spandex, but as we all know from Smallville, it takes a while to get from having powers to being super.  Chronicle is the latest “Found Footage” film to hit the theaters, and it shows three boys trying to become super-men after they get their powers on.  It’s a film with tons of trippy, amazing scenes of superhero derring-do, but all the special effects in the world can’t cover for a weak storyline.  As a wannabe comic book nerd, I’m bummed that a movie that came up with such a great premise failed to deliver a movie I cared about past the closing credits.

Remember high school?  You either hated it, or it was the Best Time Ever and now you’re pumping gas or ghostwriting YA novels.  Andrew, the male version of Carrie White of his local high school, has just bought a camera and has decided to film his day-to-day life.  Cool burnout cousin Matt thinks that’s a lame way to hide from the world (and hey, it kinda is) but since Matt has no real interest in spending time with his cuz beyond the token morning ride to school, it’s a non-issue.  That is until senior class uberdude Steve finds something in the woods during a party Matt dragged Andrew and Andrew’s camera to.  When these three guys head down the rabbit hole — literally — they find something way cooler than Peter Parker’s radioactive spider.  The next day, they’ve got powers.  Powers that seem to get stronger and stronger every day.  But the guys react to these powers differently; wanna guess what happens when they stop getting along?

Movie Review: The Grey

How do you review a movie that wasn’t great, but didn’t suck? A movie that pulled you in, but not far enough in that you were absorbed? A film that wasn’t bad, but didn’t feel like it was made for you? Such were the questions I asked myself before I sat down to review The Grey, a movie about a group of men trying to survive in the cold harsh winter (of their discontent) of Alaska, wolves circling around them ready for dinner. It’s an interesting character study, with the group of tough guys slowly breaking down one by one. But gorgeous views of Alaska and the well-done animatronic wolves weren’t enough. For me, I wanted more.

The Grey is a man vs. nature film, and you need to be a dude (or in a dude frame of mind) to really get into this film.  Or perhaps it just that this film suffers from a lack of dramatic structure.  You can easily pick out the movies director/screenwriter Joe Carnahan (The A Team, Smokin’ Aces) loves as this movie unspools.  Go ahead; you won’t miss much if your mind wanders. The Thing (scary!cold), Alive (dudes survive a plane crash!), Ghost and the Darkness (scary!animals), Wolfen (wolves!  eek!), Solaris (dead wife visions!) Cliffhanger (daring feats of ice bravery!) But I like to think of The Grey as Deliverance. With wolves. Cue the banjo music…oh wait, wolves don’t have opposable thumbs. No wonder they’re pissed.

Superbowl Teaser Trailers: what ruled, what sucked.

God I love the Superbowl.  All that food, the party, the commercials…and yeah, sometimes I even watch the game.  Did you see that last touchdown by the Giants?  DID YOU SEE IT?  Even a geek like me has to bow to that greatness.

Movie trailers are my number one love during the Superbowl, even beyond dieting dogs and fuzzy Chinese Crested beer-getters.  (Though you had to cheer for little Weego & the rescue website.  Or you’re dead inside.)  So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the spots for the Groovy Movies of 2012:

Why I’m psyched for the Oscars: Billy. Crystal.

Oh yeah.  He’s gonna be a hoot.  Most folks thought last year’s hosting job by James Franco & Anne Hathaway sucked (I thought she was awesome…he looked wasted), but just about everyone knows that Billy Crystal will be entertaining.  So you’ll probably have to sit through a musical montage at the start?  Who cares?  And now, isn’t it kinda expected?

I’ve seen a lot of ads for the Academy Award ™, but I hadn’t seen this one when I went over to my fine, fabulous press kit site.  So, I share.  Oh, and nice ‘stache, Duhamel.

Hooray — it’s Oscartime! In a few weeks, but still. I’ll have my picks from Geek for e up here soon….

New images sneak peeks: Mirror Mirror, Act of Valor and Haywire

I have a love/hate relationship with teaser trailers.  On the one hand, I don’t want to see ’em because I don’t want to get spoiled.  On the other hand, I can’t help myself because I have no willpower whatsoever.

That’s where images come in.  Just a peek, just a glimpse.  No context, no dropping lines that could be the next catchphrase (or could be the only thing worth seeing in the film).  All of the delicious, delicious set, costume and art design.  Mmmmm.

So here’s a few shots, courtesy of image.net by Getty Images, to wet our whistles without giving us all too much.  Just a peek, just a glimpse.  Enjoy!

Wayback Machine — Swamp Thing: The Series

Every now and then I get very lazy.  So, why not link to old reviews I’ve written?  Plus, it shines a light on two of my very favorite sites, so there’s that.  Today?  A review I wrote for Green Man Review in February, 2009 and re-published March 2011 when we spun off into Sleeping Hedgehog.  If you want to read the whole thing (or better still, take a gander at the reviews from the other reviewers, for they are the awesome), clicky!

By Denise Kitashima Dutton, on March 22nd, 2011

This review was first published, quite naturally, on Green Man Review.

What it ought to be is dumped down the toilet, is where it ought to be….Good or bad, evil or successes, never throw anything away. – Dr. Anton Arcane, episode #5, “Blood Wind”

That seems to have been the thought process behind the folks at Shout Factory when they put out this boxed set.  It’s probably what drove the folks who made this series in the first place.  Sure, Swamp Thing wasn’t the most well-known superhero in the D.C. Comics stable, but Wes Craven’s campy but cool movie adaptation and its so-so sequel shone the light on this character, paving the way for other opportunities.  Now, with Swamp Thing: The Series, the first 22 episodes (seasons 1 and 2) get a box set treatment.  It’s a completist’s treasure, but a well thought out “Best Of” set with the lesser episodes removed would have been a better crafted, more enjoyable collection.

Screen Actors Guild Awards 2012: and ther winners are….

Well, it’s not as drunked up as the Golden Globes.  It doesn’t have quite the cachet of the Acacemy Awards (yet).  But for actors, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are a way of patting the best of the year on the back.  Plus, you get to take a naked man home.  Score!

I’m loving that Jessica Lange won for her role as Constance, the schizo neighbor from hell.  And to everyone who thinks that The Help shouldn’t get the press that it does?  Suck it.  (ZOMG, a film about racism in the 60s has…wait for it…racist characters!  And African-American characters that were scared of doing the right thing!  That was life back then, and this film shows it, warts & all.)  BRAVO to the entire cast, and especially winners Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer!  I’m also glad to see Jean Dujardin score a win for his brilliant work in The Artist.

Here’s the winners from last night, read more after the jump (hey, it’s a long list y’all.  Just keeping things tidy.)

My latest Hunger Games obsession: Capitol Couture

Image

Do as I say, not as I do.  That’s my fashion style.  I love to leaf through fashion mags (what-what, In Style and Lucky), window-shop, web-surf (holla at Man Repeller, for she is awesome)  But I dress like a schizophrenic 5-year old with a Forever 21 accessories fetish.  I’m also addicted to TeeFury, and my collection of geek (think Game of Thrones, The Stand, Firefly and Harry Potter) t-shirts is…well.  I know, I”m amazing.

So, when I saw a tweet about the new Hunger Games site, Capitol Couture, I jumped on that bad boy.  Mostly because I am really psyched for the HG-themed nail polish and figured I’d get a heads-up on any special goodness.  However, Capitol Couture isn’t a PR site, it’s more of a Panem mythology spin-off, with interviews with Effie, “sightings” of Tributes, tons of Panem gossip, and “Stylists Wanted” ads (which I’m sure will be interactive soon, which should be a lot of fun).

There are some tips of the hat to the real world, with a nod to photographer Craig McDean, and fashions by Alexander McQueen and Mugler.  There’s also a bit about my current nail polish obsessions (sorry, Disco Biscuit; you’ll always have my heart.)

This site is linked to the larger The Capitol site, which makes it look like the Hunger Games is gonna roll out some more pretty cool stuff before the film opens.

May the odds be ever in your favor!
