Story: Austrian Franz Jägerstätter is happy in his village. He farms, he loves his family, and he gathers with his fellows at the local beer garden. But this is WWII, and every able bodied Austrian man must do his service for the Reich. Understandably, Jägerstätter isn’t keen and demurs, even with shunning and even death looming before him.

TrailerWatch – “Top Gun: Maverick” shows an older, wiser, but still cocky pilot

Ready for the danger zone? Synopsis!

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

This trailer hits all the notes we remember from the original film, keeping its own story top secret. I’m looking forward to seeing more. Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters June 26th, 2020.

“Jumanji: The Next Level” levels up the franchise nicely

Columbia Screening Pass-palooza – “Little Women”!

Yeah it’s another adaptation of the classic novel. But look at the cast y’all! Synopsis!

Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms — is both timeless and timely.

Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

TrailerWatch “THE GRUDGE” releases a red band trailer…and a whole lot of quality creep

You know it’s one helluva thriller when I barely register that John Cho is shirtless in one scene… Synopsis!

Producer Sam Raimi brings us a twisted new take of the horror classic. Directed by Nicolas Pesce, THE GRUDGE stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin with Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver. With a screenplay by Nicolas Pesce and a story by Nicolas Pesce and Jeff Buhler, THE GRUDGE is based on the film “Ju-On: The Grudge” written and directed by Takashi Shimizu.

Streaming News – “Locke and Key” debuts on Netflix February 7th

Locke and Key is a fantastic comic book series, and I got stoked when writer Joe Hill announced the Netflix adaptation. Now that the series is actually on the streaming services’ schedule? GAAAAAAH! Synopsis!

After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death. As the Locke children explore the different keys and their unique powers, a mysterious demon awakens — and will stop at nothing to steal them. From Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House), the series is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family.
