Story: Seen Kimba the White Lion? That.
Genre I’d put it in: Live Action Unnecessary But Gorgeous Disney Remakes

Shut up you’re crying. Oh man am I gonna be a blubbery mess when I catch this in theaters. I’m already verklempt after this trailer. Start filling out your Oscar ballots y’all. Synopsis!
Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of love seem undimmed as she embarks on a whirlwind romance with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer.
Judy hits town in September.
This first teaser trailer for the live action Mulan ain’t bad y’all. Yes I’m still tetchy about the possibility of swapping dragon Mushu with a phoenix, and Disney booting all the singing (OH COME ON)…
But I’m definitely here for the gorgeous wide shots of training warriors. And, of course, Gong Li as Mulan’s mother, because Li is perfection.
Give it a look – I’m still grumpy over the proposed changes, but I have to admit I’m impressed as hell with this teaser. Mulan hits theaters next year.
411: Ready for Shark Week? Yeah baby, it’s hitting town July 28th through August 4th. These so-bad-they’re-great movies may not get you into the water this summer (BECAUSE SHARKS), but they will have you enjoying the hell out of yourself. Get ready for implausible stories, new romances kindled by disaster, and creative as hell deaths with hilariously awful FX.
These originally on SyFy movies are just what the doctor ordered, if you’re in the mood for some Sharknado-type fun. And each of these films delivers a slightly different spin on the “shark’s gonna getcha” story, so things don’t get dull. The Blu-ray transfer on these films is great – probably because each film has already spent time on the small screen via cable – so the hilariously cheesy FX are crystal clear.
Ready for a day off (and some seriously yummy chilled watermelon and grilled corn (YUUUUUM)? Well, one last thing before we get this 4th of July party started; screening passes to Stuber! Synopsis!
When a mild-mannered Uber driver named Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) picks up a passenger (Dave Bautista) who turns out to be a cop hot on the trail of a brutal killer, he’s thrust into a harrowing ordeal where he desperately tries to hold onto his wits, his life and his five-star rating. Directed by Michael Dowse, this action-comedy from 20th Century Fox also stars Iko Uwais, Natalie Morales, Betty Gilpin, Jimmy Tatro, Mira Sorvino and Karen Gillan.
Ready? Let’s go! Continue reading
Story: Home ties up the MCU Phase Three storylines and paves the way for more adventures for your friendly neighborhood web-slinger. Want more? Too bad. Oh okay; Peter Parker and his schoolmates head to Europe for an educational summer trip. It’ll be educational all right.
Genre I’d put it in: Teen Comedy-meets-Action Thriller
Remake, Sequel, Based-On, or Original: Film #3 in the newest Spider-Man film series. Part of the MCU, and the final film of Marvel’s Phase Three. Continue reading
I wasn’t sure what Sony Pictures could do to make their re-booted Jumanji a series that’d be compelling. But damn if they didn’t do it. How? By even more body-swap shenanigans!
The “in-game” cast looks as game as ever, and it’ll be fun watching Johnson and Black play grandpas trying to figure out what’s happening. Jumanji: The Next Level comes to town Christmas 2019.
Alright I’ll admit it; though I enjoy Kristin Stewart (don’t @ me, she’s doing cool work post-sparkle), I wasn’t sure if this new reboot would be fun. But by the looks of it, it will be. Cribbing from the Kingsman and Men in Black franchises for their screct underground vibe, this could be a hit. I’m looking forward to seeing more.
Charlie’s Angels hits theaters (and a whole lot of bad guys) this November.
Mot-hu-rah-YA! Mot-hu-rah! Where my kaiju fans at? Oh, I know you have the Mothra song in your heads now, and I’m sure you’re fine with that. But do you have the new SteelBook edition of this kaiju classic? No? Well that’s okay – it won’t be released ’til July 9th. But you’ll want one.
Why? Because it’s beautiful. The color transfer here is Technicolor-licious, with the color saturation cranked to 11. The night shots aren’t as visible, most likely because the transfer couldn’t deal with brightness and sharpness without throwing things into eyeball overkill. Continue reading
