“Tommy’s Honour” – a golf film that swings for your heart

Nutshell: A bit too light of a touch with Tommy’s backstory starts the film off with a slight handicap, and a lack of character development (as well as golf basics for non-players) often lands the plot in the weeds.  But with a strong finish in the short game, Honour makes par.  A must-view for any golf lover, and a definite go-to for fans of indie biopics. Grade: B

“Your station in life was set before you were born, young Morris.”

Story: A brash youngster breaks onto the golf scene, innovating the entire sport.  No, I’m not talking about Tiger Woods.  I’m talking about Tommy “Young Tom” Morris, widely considered to be the best golfer of the 19th Century.  As headstrong Tommy begins to carve a name out for himself in professional golf – a brand-new specialty at the time – he and his forelock-tugging father “Old Tom” begin to re-invent golf, turning it into the sport duffers know and love.  (Spoiler: as Tommy tragically died at age 24, keep Kleenex on hand.) TrailerWatch: “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” teases us with whips, explosions…and COLIN FIRTH

“I hope you’re ready…for what comes next.”

They had me with Colin Firth’s voiceover… The Kingsman sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, has finally dropped its first trailer.  WOOT!  Synopsis!

“Kingsman: The Secret Service” introduced the world to Kingsman – an independent, international intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion, whose ultimate goal is to keep the world safe. In “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” our heroes face a new challenge. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents’ strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that’s becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy…

You just know Channing Tatum is 100% in for being a yee-haw AMURICAN, and I can’t wait to see how that plays out in the Kingsman universe. And OMGCOLINFIRTH! Good to see Harry back in fine form. Ahem.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle hits theaters everywhere on September 22, 2017.

Happy Monday everyone!  Why happy?  Because I’ve got copies of A Dog’s Purose on Blu-ray for you!  This was a sweet story, and I thought it was sweetly sentimental when it hit theaters.  So it’s nice to be able to share a few copies with my readers. Synopsis!

Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film told from the dog’s perspective also stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, John Ortiz, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Peggy Lipton, Pooch Hall and Dennis Quaid.

“Their Finest” – a touching historical piece that’s a damn fine movie about making movies

Nutshell: With hints of the charming, hopeful UK propaganda films of WWII, Their Finest can be labeled a comedy, but doesn’t shy away from showing the agonies of wartime Britain.  A powerful, sweet, and sometimes heartbreaking comedy. In this instance, yes that makes perfect sense. Grade: A

“Don’t confuse facts with truth, and for God’s sake don’t let either get in the way of a story.”

Story: It’s 1940. Catrin Cole and her husband are in London during the Blitz.  To stay in London, Catrin takes a job at the Ministry of Film, not realizing that her job is actually to help write the films they make. When Catrin finds out a true story about the Dunkirk Evacuation is less than the myth, she decides to embellish. Cue the war behind the camera…aaaaaand? ACTION! Continue reading

Fest News: The Overlook Film Festival announces their 2017 lineup!

Worldwide horror in li’l ol’ Oregon? Well, you know the venue, horror-hounds; it’s the Overlook Hotel. Yeah, that hotel.*** With me now? Yeah you are.

The Overlook Film Festival sounds absolutely amazing. And not just because location, location, location. They’ve got a killer (HEH) list of films they’ll be showing!  A few I’m particularly looking forward to streaming later:

  • The Dwarves Must Be Crazy by Bhin Banloerit: Thai mythology “full of intestines and flatulence humor”. It’s like they know my favorite things!
  • Lake Bodom by Taneli Mustonen: This Finnish story of “every camper’s worst nightmare” had me at camper. Can’t wait to see the spin Mustonen has on the much beloved Campers Gone Die story!
  • Mayhem by Joe Lynch: Who didn’t love Knights of Badassdom? So I’d be front-n-center to Lynch’s next thing. Especially since the keyword to this story is “virus”. WOOOHOO!
  • Capture by Georgia Lee: When someone says “in the tradition of William Castle”, you get my attention. Blending things-that-go-bump with the live-action/found-footage subgenre and a “real-time interactivity”?  Whoa.
  • The Bad Batch from Ana Lily Amirpour! She rocked the vampire genre with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, so I can’t wait to see what she does with cannibals, the apocalypse and a girl trying to get by…

As well as the World Premiere of Blood Drive from SyFy. Director James Roland has an interesting spin on Death Race and Mad Max; cars that run on human blood. Vroom vroom, meatsacks! With SyFy’s The Expanse and Wynona Earp grabbing my attention of late, I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store with Blood Drive. (THEY HAD ME AT GRINDHOUSE Y’ALL.)

Then there’s the short films…and the immersive gaming experiences…and the performances…. Oh who am I kidding? I want to see and do all the things. ALL THE THINGS. This list sounds absolutely incredible; Fest-goers will need all the dark chocolate to stay awake and not miss a moment. (What? You do caffeine your way. I’ma do it mine.)

I wish I could make it this year, but I’ll definitely be traipsing down those horrible hallways next time. Read on for the full, freaky, details for this years lineup of awesome!

***Yes, the story is inspired by The Stanley Hotel in Colorado.  And the mini-series was shot at Colorado’s The Stanley. But those creepy-awesome exterior shots at the beginning of Kubrick’s classic film adaptation?  This place.
