Worldwide horror in li’l ol’ Oregon? Well, you know the venue, horror-hounds; it’s the Overlook Hotel. Yeah, that hotel.*** With me now? Yeah you are.
The Overlook Film Festival sounds absolutely amazing. And not just because location, location, location. They’ve got a killer (HEH) list of films they’ll be showing! A few I’m particularly looking forward to streaming later:
- The Dwarves Must Be Crazy by Bhin Banloerit: Thai mythology “full of intestines and flatulence humor”. It’s like they know my favorite things!
- Lake Bodom by Taneli Mustonen: This Finnish story of “every camper’s worst nightmare” had me at camper. Can’t wait to see the spin Mustonen has on the much beloved Campers Gone Die story!
- Mayhem by Joe Lynch: Who didn’t love Knights of Badassdom? So I’d be front-n-center to Lynch’s next thing. Especially since the keyword to this story is “virus”. WOOOHOO!
- Capture by Georgia Lee: When someone says “in the tradition of William Castle”, you get my attention. Blending things-that-go-bump with the live-action/found-footage subgenre and a “real-time interactivity”? Whoa.
- The Bad Batch from Ana Lily Amirpour! She rocked the vampire genre with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, so I can’t wait to see what she does with cannibals, the apocalypse and a girl trying to get by…
As well as the World Premiere of Blood Drive from SyFy. Director James Roland has an interesting spin on Death Race and Mad Max; cars that run on human blood. Vroom vroom, meatsacks! With SyFy’s The Expanse and Wynona Earp grabbing my attention of late, I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store with Blood Drive. (THEY HAD ME AT GRINDHOUSE Y’ALL.)
Then there’s the short films…and the immersive gaming experiences…and the performances…. Oh who am I kidding? I want to see and do all the things. ALL THE THINGS. This list sounds absolutely incredible; Fest-goers will need all the dark chocolate to stay awake and not miss a moment. (What? You do caffeine your way. I’ma do it mine.)
I wish I could make it this year, but I’ll definitely be traipsing down those horrible hallways next time. Read on for the full, freaky, details for this years lineup of awesome!
***Yes, the story is inspired by The Stanley Hotel in Colorado. And the mini-series was shot at Colorado’s The Stanley. But those creepy-awesome exterior shots at the beginning of Kubrick’s classic film adaptation? This place.
