Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Zootopia!

ZOOTOPIA one sheetDogs and cats!  And sloths!  And elephants!  Living together!  Mass hysteria?  Nope; it’s just Disney’s new film, Zootopia.  Synopsis!

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.

With names like Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Shakira, Tommy Chong, J.K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, and (OH HELLO) Idris Elba, this sound like a hoot.  Want in?  Of course you do — you’re smart and you dig movies.  So read on…

After spending most of their time focusing on their troubling teenage daughter, Toula and Ian are facing marital problems while also having to deal with yet another Greek wedding – this time, even bigger and fatter.

The trailer looks adorable — and hilarious — so I’m game.  Are you?  Well then, right this way…

Elsewhere Review: “Race” shows the man and the times behind the legend

As always, clicky on the title below for the original piece!

“Race” shows the man and the times behind the legend

race onesheetWe all know Jesse Owens; he’s the runner we all hear about in sophomore year high school American history class.  The guy that went to the Berlin Olympics in 1936 and showed Hitler that the idea of an Übermensch needed to be retooled a little.  A lot.  But filmgoers get a bigger picture of Owens in Race, a film that takes Jesse Owens and his considerable talent, and puts him into his time, complete with bigotry, politics and the spectacle of the Olympic Games.

Director Stephen Hopkins (House of Lies, and one of my favorite Tales From the Crypt episodes, “Abra Cadaver”*) balances all of this beautifully.  What could have been a by-the-numbers history lesson or a pedestal-buffing hosana to a legendary athlete, instead is a compelling story of one man’s struggle to find himself amid the slings and arrows of his times.

Frank Castle’s Punisher unleashes the pain in Daredevil Season 2 trailer

daredevil season 2 onesheet“You know you’re one bad day away from being me.”

And isn’t that why Frank Castle resonates with readers? Because we’ve all been in a situation where if we’d had the right training/firepower/skills, we fear we might go just as postal. Or maybe we’d even long for that kind of release. But if the Punisher teaches us anything, it’s that Castle’s pain never lessens, and his work never ends.  And that’s no way I wanna walk through life.  Better to read the issues, and watch episodes on TV!

New Daredevil cast member Jon Bernthal (aka Shane from The Walking Dead) nails Castle’s quiet anger and crackling undercurrent of rage. Gives me chills. The good kind, not the forgot-my-coat kind.  And the differences between Matt Murdock’s justice, and the Punisher’s “they stay down” mentality should provide lots of drama this season.

Part 2 of the Daredevil Season 2 trailer hits on February 25th, 2016. Looking forward to seeing what Elektra is bringing to the mix…

Documentary “You Slut” calls out slut shaming and victim blaming

Director Rachel Mullins interviews Tiffany Haddish (Actress) (PRNewsFoto/Jamie Noel Productions)

Director Rachel Mullins (R) interviews actress Tiffany Haddish (L) (PRNewsFoto/Jamie Noel Productions)

Bullying, whether it be against the student that “doesn’t fit in”, someone who’s different from the rest of the pack, or simply because of how she dresses, is never okay. So I’m glad to see a documentary that tackles the subject of slut shaming.

You Slut, directed by Rachel Mullins, takes a look at how slut shaming and victim shaming affect women, and how prevalent it is in this country.  From “whore-phobia” ( I love this term, coined by documentary interviewee Minnie Scarlet), to Kate Quigley, who got shamed by fellow comedians for putting pictures of herself up on her personal Instagram pages (“…[P]eople are gonna forget that you’re funny.”), to the ever-popular victim blaming, You Slut digs deep.

Check out the teaser trailer for You Slut, and then read the official press release after the jump.

“Stomping Ground” – a backwoods horror story that’s off the beaten track

stomping-ground-dvd

Nutshell: tired of the same-ol’, same-ol’ when it comes to spooky stories set in the deep woods?  Stomping Ground is a film that digs into mythology and interpersonal dynamics to amp up the suspense, rather than the ol’ run-run-slash.  Big bonus points for avoiding usual cliches and going with a straight-on spookfest.  Atmospheric, ominous, and downright creepy.  Bon appetit, monster fans.

“Bigfoot hunting. That’s fucking ridiculous.”

Chicago hipster Ben spends Thanksgiving in his girlfriend Annie’s small North Carolina town. One night out with Annie’s old friends, and “Big City” finds himself out for a camping trip…and finding Bigfoot is on the agenda.  Is he being played, or are they really being stalked?  Continue reading

TrailerWatch: Sing!

sing onesheetDid you check out the Grammys last night?  Pretty cool — especially the Hamilton win for Best Musical Theater Album.  (And how about that kickass acceptance speech by Lin-Manuel Miranda?)

You may have seen the trailer for Sing in-between all the awards show awesomeness…but in case you didn’t (or if you want to see it again), here it is.  What’s it all about?  Synopsis!

A koala named Buster recruits his best friend to help him drum up business for his theater by hosting a singing competition.

The trailer looks absolutely adorable, and hints at an all-ages type of comedy that should keep the kiddies entertained (singing animals!) while giving grownups a chuckle or two (I’m loving the cover of Crazy Town’s “Butterfly”…)  As this is American Idol’s final season, it’s a pretty timely story.  And getting actors with great chops – like Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, John C. Reilly, Seth MacFarlane and Nick Offerman – ain’t too shabby either.  Bonus: seeing Nick Kroll, Leslie Jones, and AbFab‘s Jennifer Saunders on the cast list means there’s sure to be some high-quality laughs.

Check out the trailer below, and read on after the jump for the full press release! Sing hits theaters December 21st, 2016.

Deadpool: sleazy, savage, and super

deadpool vd

Nutshell:  Want a great family-friendly superhero film to watch with your loved ones to this Valentine’s Day?  Stay at home and re-watch Avengers.  Want an over-the-top gorefest that is full of crass, inappropriate humor, nekkidness, ultraviolence, and a cast that’s game for whatever crazy stuff comes next? Line the hell up.  Wade Wilson may not take himself seriously, but this film is serious fun.  THIS is how to do an origin story.  Pass the chimichangas.  Grade: A+

“From the studio that inexplicably sewed his fucking mouth shut the first time, comes… me!”

Yes, the marketing for this film has been off the chain.  Absolutely top-notch.  In fact, I’m betting marketing execs have been fired for not coming up with stuff this sweet for other super-movies.  Or at least been moved to that office with the copier and microwave. But how does Deadpool stack up as a movie and not a marketing juggernaut?  Damn fine, thanks for asking. Continue reading
