Review in a Flash: “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”

whiskey tango foxtrotSometimes I’m too lazy for a full-out piece. Sometimes everything I’ve got to say about a film can be summarized in a sentence or two. Sometimes it’s both. So herewith, a quick-n-dirty on Tina Fey’s new film, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

“No one will sue when I die…. So now I’m a war reporter.”

Nutshell: Funny, engaging and sometimes terrifying, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot breaks down the chaos and violence of double-aught Afghanistan and makes it relatable to moviegoers who probably never got past CNN sound bites.  Fey brings her substantial comedic chops, as you’d expect.  But she also taps into the humanity and uncertainty of her character. If this film wasn’t quite so disjointed, it’d be great.  But as it stands, it’s good, and that’s okay. Grade: B

Before: This trailer is awesome.  I really hope that these aren’t the best jokes.  But with Tina Fey leading this flick, I’m betting there’s more in store.  I’d no idea that there was a memoir written by a female war correspondent (The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Kim Barker),  I may have to add that to my GoodReads queue.  Love her quote:

“My greatest wish is that the movie will remind people about Afghanistan, currently in a perilous state and almost forgotten by the world’s media.”

I hope so too.

During: A blend of M*A*S*H and Generation Kill, with a heaping helping of 21st Century frat-party antics to keep the serious subject matter from sinking the ship.  Fey is delightful, and she’s really stepping up her dramatic actor game.  Her portrayal of Kim Barker (Baker, in the film) is self-knowing, deadpan, and knows what she wants, even though she’s not exactly sure how to go about getting it her new surroundings.  The soundtrack is cool, with Harry Nilsson’s “Without You”, “Take On Me” by Ah Ha, and Kid Rock’s “Bawitdaba”.  Oh, and shout-out to the set design folks, this wartime Afghanistan is gritty, dirty, messy…and that’s just the journalist’s apartments.

Apparently, as with all films, there were changes made to the real story.  While the real Kim Barker was a print reporter – as were the bulk of the journalists she was based with – in WTF the journalists are TV news reporters.  I don’t have a problem with that tweak.  One scene, where Fey’s Barker jumps out of a jeep to record a particularly harrowing gunfight, and then having that footage be used in a piece that evening, wouldn’t have the same cinematic heft if she’d been in the background, jotting notes.  Being able to watch the “Kabubble” journalists react to an on-air news piece that one of them just recorded lets the characters and their reaction take center stage, without too much help from the Exposition Fairy.

Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa both worked on Crazy, Stupid, Love, and their ability to bounce from topic to topic while keeping serious topics funny is on display here.  But as with Crazy, things play fast and loose, more funny than dramatic. I understand Kim, and her life.  I even feel for her when things get rough, and celebrate with her and her friends.  BTW the best of the co-star bunch are Margot Robbie’s reporter Tanya, Billy Bob Thornton as straight-laced General Hollanek, Christopher Abbott as Afghan “fixer” Fahim, and Martin Freeman’s lecherous, devil-may-care war photographer Iain.  Watching this film is like knocking back Wonka’s Fizzy Lifting Drinks.  This story is pulling me in, and I’m enjoying the hell out of it.  Especially because there’s no giant fan to deal with.

After:  Well, as with Wonka’s drinks, the fizzy ride is awesome, but after?  I’m back on the ground, and a little fuzzy on what just happened. I know I laughed a lot, and a few times this film hit me right in the feels.  Maybe I can just chalk this up to a successful comedy/drama for Fey and like it for the lightweight entertainment it is?  But then I remember it’s a film about a war, and I kinda want more permanence in my brain.  Hell, there’s plenty of empty space up there, it’s not like letting WTF stick around would be a problem.

Did I like the film?  Heck yeah.  Would I see it again?  Absolutely; I can see myself scrolling through Netflix, seeing this is available, and kicking back again and again.  But…there’s a hole where my excitement should be.  I don’t know why that is.  WTF is fun, it’s funny, but it covers the same ground any other new-kid-in-town story does.  Except with more explosions, and lots more sub-plots.  The co-workers, the romance, the war, the intrigue with contacts in Afghanistan, the back and forth with the Marines, the fish-out-of-water moments… Maybe that’s it; WTF is a fun ride no lie, but it’s a bit too all-over-the-place to really settle into my bones.  Ah hell; I enjoyed it, and I’d watch it again.  Shallow ain’t the worst thing in the world.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: 10 Cloverfield Lane!

10 cloverfield lane onesheetHey there guys and gals!  Ready for a sequel that’s not a sequel, that may be not a sequel but it’s set in the same universe?  Confused?  That’s typical for a twisty-turny J. J. Abrams joint, so just settle in and check out the synopsis for 10 Cloverfield Lane:

A woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) discovers the horrifying truth about the outside world while living in an underground shelter with two men (John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr.).

Sequel or not, I’m kinda loving the idea of using “Cloverfield” as a way to let moviegoers know that they’re in for something spooky.  Kinda like what the Halloween franchise tried to do with Season of the Witch…but failed because nobody wanted their Halloween without Mikey.

If you’ve checked out the trailer, you know 10 Cloverfield Lane looks like a cool bit of psychological horror. But will there be monsters as well?  Only one way to find out, and that’s to check it out for yourself.  So c’mon and check it out with me, why don’cha?

TrailerWatch – “Fun Size Horror: Volume Two”

fun size horror vol 2 onesheetNow that spring is around the corner, it’s time to find chills the old fashioned way; from horror movies.  I’m a sucker for horror anthologies, so when I saw the Fun Size Horror: Volume Two* trailer, I had to share with the class.

With Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) and Tracie Thoms (Grindhouse) in for the ride, this should be a hoot.  Plus, the animated short intrigues me.

WARNING: this trailer is spoiler-riffic, and gives you a peek at several deaths. Not like you should be surprised that characters die in horror films. But if you like your horror untainted by the knowledge of who’s gonna bite it? Perhaps stop watching at 0:35.

Fun Size Horror: Volume Two creeps into theaters October 15th, 2016.

*BTW, a review of Fun Size Horror: Volume One will be touching down soon…

“London Has Fallen” salutes the troops!

I enjoyed Olympus Has Fallen. So you know I’ll be front and center to check out its sequel, London Has Fallen. But in addition to my usual love of all things that go boom, I’ve got a touch of the warm fuzzies for the cast and crew right now. Why? Because they headed out to share their new film with the Armed Forces here, and in Kuwait.  Yep, before the official release date.  Pretty sweet.  And stars Aaron Eckhart, Angela Basset and Gerard Butler even made special apperances at bases here in the States.  OOOH-RAH!

Check out the pics from the event, and read on for the full press release after the jump!

The Horror! — “Stalled”

stalled onesheet

Okay, time to get back on the horror train, with a brand-new section here at AFan.  Hooray!  First up, a zombie apocalypse movie…set in the bathroom?

“The Queen’s swimming in my toilet.”

Subgenre: Zombie horror-comedy. C’mon, look at the poster.

Story: It’s Christmas Eve, and poor WC (GET IT?) is hiding in a ladies bathroom stall after two women come in while he’s cleaning. But when a pizza boy “gets rapey under the mistletoe” and leaves a bite mark on one of the ladies? He’s literally up shit(ters) creek. I know, but I couldn’t resist.

FX: Middling. Zombies = white foundation & black eye makeup. Lots of fake blood and latex bite wounds lit too brightly to pass as believable.

Thoughts:

Well, this does answer the “what happens if you’re stuck in the bathroom during the zombie apocalypse” question. Stalled is low budget horror.  SUPER low budget. I see this film as one shot late at night at somebody’s day job when the boss wasn’t looking. Continue reading

Elsewhere Review: “Gods of Egypt” is a godawful, glorious mess

As always, clicky on the header for the original piece!

“Gods of Egypt” is a godawful, glorious mess

gods of egyptNutshell: Can something be awful and amazing at the same time?  Well, Gods of Egypt is certainly giving it its best shot.  With crazy action scenes, a nutso plot, and CGI that feels like the SyFy channel and 1999’s The Mummy had a lovechild of doom, this film tries for Glorious Epic and comes off 50s Throwback.  And I haven’t even started on my #GodsSoWhite rant yet.  Bumping this up half a grade for its sheer balls, and for Geoffrey Rush’s weird fishtail braid.  Grade: C-

“Oh, bother.”

Nope, that quote above isn’t from Winnie the Pooh.  Well okay, it is.  But it’s also here in Gods of Egypt.  And not only is it spoken by one of the “Gods”, it’s probably what every member of the cast and crew thought to themselves once the reality of this movie really set in.  But hey, everyone’s got a mortgage that needs to be paid, amirite?

Director Alex Proyas seems determined to complete the downward spiral he’s started after his work on 1994’s brilliant Brandon Lee superhero flick The CrowI, Robot, the glorious Nick Cage magnum opus Knowing, and now this…movie.  Gods of Egypt is like the world’s craziest D&D campaign run amok, where the DM has taken the rule book, the mythos for the world, and any semblance of coherence, and chucked ’em all out the window.  But if you’re ready to settle in — after a few beers or better yet, several shots of the strongest liquor in your cabinet (something white, to set the mood) — I’ll dig a bit deeper so you know what you’ll be getting yourself into.

“Eddie the Eagle” – cute, conventional, charming.

eddie the eagle poster“How do you land, exactly?”

Relatable characters, real on-screen chemistry between the two leads, and winning performances by Jackman and Egerton.  Director Dexter Fletcher has clocked a lot of time in front of the camera as well as behind it, and seems to know exactly what to do to bring out quiet, believable performances from his cast.  Eddie is a feel-good story about a total mess who makes good.  Well, as good as he’s able.

Is it predictable in a movie-of-the-week kinda way?  Yep.  But that’s not the point; anyone can google Eddie and see his real-life Olympic career.  Does the plot feel a bit cookie cutter-ish?  Again, yep. Still, those performances, and a slyly funny screenplay make this an enjoyable romp.  And I’ve gotta give props to a fantastic retro soundtrack, with songs like Van Halen’s “Jump”, Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams”, and many other 80s favorites.

Sure, the story of Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards is an odd one.  But it’s fascinating.  And Eddie doesn’t shy away from the fact that ski jumping is a dangerous as hell sport.  If you’re game for a story that doesn’t rely on boom, bang or boobies, you can’t go wrong here.

Grade: B

“Daredevil” Season 2 — new trailer shows Elektra, and a gathering storm

daredevil season 2 onesheetThe Punisher. Elektra. And now it’s official; The Hand is coming to Hell’s Kitchen.  Daredevil is definitely upping the ante from Season 1, and that’s saying something.  I was pumped with the first Season 2 trailer, and now I’m counting the days ’til the season hits Netflix.

It’s good to see that Marvel isn’t pulling any punches, and Elektra is looking all sorts of wicked cool.  And I can’t wait to see what The Hand — an infamous criminal organization that was created by Frank Miller — has in store.  Y’know Frank Miller; the guy who created The Dark Knight and 300?  So kids, looks like it’s about to go down.

Daredevil Season 2 starts March 18th, 2016.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

whiskey tango foxtrotWTF am I talking about?  Exactly.  Confused? Don’t be.  It’s the new Tina Fey comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and the trailer looks very promising.  It’s based on  the book The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Kim Barker, which is now something I’ll need to add to my ever-growing GoodReads queue.  Synopsis!

The story of when reporter Kim Baker’s (Tina Fey) life needs something more, she decides to ‘shake it all up’ by taking an assignment in a war zone. There, in the midst of chaos, she finds the strength she never knew she had.

For me Fey has done an excellent job of picking interesting, funny films in her post-30 Rock career (in particular, This is Where I Leave You and Sisters  were enjoyable as hell.)  I’m hopeful WTF will be no different.  Onward, to passes!
