#31in31 2019 – “Prince of Darkness”

“You are receiving this broadcast as a dream…”

Story: An old priest dies, leaving a key to a basement…OF DOOM. Father Donald Pleasance asks a metaphysics professor and a group of top grad students to help figure out what to do with the huge (slowly leaking) container in said basement. But don’t they know not to go anywhere alone? *cue green goo in the face* Susan, what’s wrong?

Scares: Plenty.

Splat factor: So much icky, Ghostbusters-y stuff. So much. Continue reading

#31in31 2019 – “Spirit Camp”

“Fuck swim team!”

Story: Goth (and former juvie) chick Nikki has to attend a summer cheer camp with her school’s squad because rehabilitation and stuff. But naturally Nikki isn’t the jerk in the group; she’s just surrounded by dinks. When cheerleaders start dying in gruesome ways, Niki and the gang must band together. That’ll work well I’m sure.

Scares: Of the Grade Z slasher variety.

Splat factor: Mostly just a lot of the red stuff. Continue reading

#31in31 2019 – “Howl” (2015)

“Ladies and gentlemen, apologies once again for the delay. I’m still waiting on word from the driver.”

Story: Poor Joe. First he gets passed over for promotion, then he has to work a second shift on the midnight train. Collecting tickets from these folks isn’t great…but it’s a lot better than what happens when the train stops after hitting something. What’s that sound?

Scares: Lots.

Splat factor: Lots. Continue reading

#31in31 2019 – Where to NOT go Trick-or-Treating!

Well, we’re into October properly, so I’ve gotta ask; where are you planning on spending Halloween? Atlas Obscura wrote a piece on the real-life places where horror movies occurred, and made a Google Map you can check out.

Okay, so there may not truly be a “Pet Sematary” in Maine, nor a House on Haunted Hill in Cali, but are you willing to take that chance? Best to skip these areas altogether this month. If you do decide to go road-tripping, be safe out there. And don’t go desecrating ancient burial grounds.

#31in31 2019 – “Cold Skin”

“Darwin was wrong.”

Story: The year is 1914, and new meteorologist comes to a remote island near Antarctica for a year’s rotation. He’s not alone though; the lighthouse keeper is close by. Crazy as hell, but close. So’s the local fauna, which includes fishlike humanoids that storm the two buildings nightly. Gonna be a long year.

Scares: Lots of nighttime attacks by the fish folk.

Splat factor: Blood splatters and bloody bodies are seen, but little else is shown. Continue reading

TrailerWatch: “The Turning”

“Bad dreams?”

What as beautiful house!  And such lovely children. Being a nanny here should be amazing right? Maybe not, in this film… Synopsis!

For more than 100 years, a deeply haunting tale has been passed down to terrify audiences. Next January, DreamWorks Pictures’ The Turning takes us to a mysterious estate in the Maine countryside, where newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora and Miles. Quickly though, she discovers that both the children and the house are harboring dark secrets and things may not be as they appear.

You’ve got time to check out The Turn of the Screw, the classic novella by Henry James that this film is based on, but maybe read it during Halloween month for maximum chills? The Turning hits theaters January 24th, 2020.

#31in31 2019 – “Monster Party” (2018)

“We’re not animals.”
‘Aren’t we?’

Story: Casper needs money to settle his dad’s debts to a loan shark. So why no pose as waiters for a posh family’s party in Malibu? He and his friends Iris and Dodge have broken into other houses for loot; this should be no sweat. Just blood and tears.

Scares: More suspense than scares.

Splat factor: Body parts, beatings and chainsaw carnage, though a lot is either off screen or in a wide shot. Okay, you may wanna pass on this if the idea of someone using another person’s severed hand to clap with grosses you out. Continue reading
