Wayback Review: The Invisibles

With my old stomping ground Green Man Review now dead and gone, I’m posting stuff I wrote there back in the day.  Because I hate to see it vanish.
[First published at Green Man Review July, 2009. I’d link to the original, but as that site has ceased to be, here ’tis all alone. I received a free copy of the DVD set, but that didn’t influence my review in the slightest. If they’d sent me Anthony Head, on the other hand…]

DVD InvisiblesThe Invisibles (Acorn Media, 2008)

Every working stiff longs to retire.  But what happens when the money runs out; you suck it up and head back out to work don’t you?  And when you’re back in the thick of the day-to-day you realize that you may not have what it takes anymore, or maybe you’ve got it but you can’t exactly hit the ground running.  Maurice “Mo” Riley and Syd Woolsey are two such retirees who find themselves back at work after fifteen years, but they’re not office types, they’re bank robbers.  Their stumbles and successes with getting back into their old profession is the basis of The Invisibles, a series that that shows you can go home again, it just might take a bit of work first.

Maurice and Syd are The Invisibles, a pair of thieves that were infamous for their ability to break in to any place, any time.  The pair were so successful that they retired years ago to the coast of Spain so they could live the good — and quiet — life.  But as time passes they yearn for Old Blighty and move back to a small fishing village in Devon.  Circumstances (typically Syd’s goof-ups or familial obligations) soon find them back to work, but they learn that thieving just ain’t what it used to be. Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: ROOTS (2016)!

roots history channel onesheetWho didn’t love/cry their eyes out during the miniseries Roots when you first saw it?  I know it wasn’t just me.  I was just a kid when I first saw the 1977 miniseries, and was mesmerized by LeVar Burton as Kunta Kinte.  I couldn’t wait until the next installment, so I could learn more about his family, and the generations that followed.

So when the History channel decided to bring the story into the 21st Century, I was intrigued.  And the trailer does not disappoint.  This remake is taking a clear-eyed view of that time in history, horrors and all.  At a time where #OscarsSoWhite, and Hollywood still doesn’t seem to miss a moment where they can whitewash something, a powerful drama highlighting the struggles African Americans have gone through and how those struggles continue to affect the world today could be just what the doctor ordered.  So, when I was offered passes for a special Roots Baltimore premiere?  I didn’t hesitate.

Premiere, you ask?  Oh yeah baby.  And it’s gonna be amazing.  They’re holding it at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture, complete with a brief Q&A/panel hosted by Jeff Johnson.  Want to go?  Of course you do!  Right this way… Continue reading

Short Film, Short Review: Already Dead

Already Dead mock poster Who wants to read a review that’s longer than the film? Nobody, that’s who. So here’s my take on a short film that will get you primed to see it, or prepped to pass on it. Herewith, Already Dead!

“We’re good, honest people. We’re just dead.”

Mockumentaries can be fun, or a sad attempt. Luckily, Already Dead falls firmly in the first category.  A tongue-in-cheek riff on rare/severe illness documentaries, Dead has the solid production values of a real doc, but with zombies.  Tell me that doesn’t make things better.

How can this “documentary” exist?  Easy; in the world of Dead, the medication “Zombenzine” helps zombies fight their cravings (some completely, others…not so much.)  Director Michael J. Dean manages to create a horror comedy with depth and relevancy in the span of fifteen minutes.  Nice trick, that. Continue reading

“Winter’s War”: hot performances, cold story

The+Huntsman+Winter's+War“And you thought this was just a game.”

Nutshell: a sequel that feels like a sincere attempt that devolved into a cash-grab.  Outstanding performances and gorgeous visuals can’t save a story that doesn’t know what to do with itself.  But yay snow leopard! Grade: C

Oh, these middle-of-the-road films.  You know the type.  They don’t stink out, yet they’re not particularly good either.  Plenty of things to commend, but overall a lackluster experience.  So here I am again, trying to write up something for The Huntsman: Winter’s War, where all I want to do is shrug and go “well, yeah izzokay”.

But izzokay isn’t enough for Winter’s War, because the trailers promised a Narnia vs. Enchanted Forest matchup as Emily Blunt’s Ice Queen Freya battles Charlize Theron’s Evil Queen Ravenna.  However, that showdown is at the tail end of this story.  Worse yet, the trailers for this film ruin the “Gotcha!” moment; from the trailers it’s plain to see that Ravenna killed Freya’s infant daughter, leading to Freya’s Ice Queen status.  But in the movie that’s not revealed until the film’s ending climax.  Brilliant move, trailer-makers.  It’d have been better to let the audience assume that’s what happened, but not really know ’til the end.  But anyone who’s seen the trailer knows exactly how things will play out. Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Keanu!

keanuOkay, who doesn’t want a copy of this poster?  It’s adorable!  And with Key and Peele in charge (including Key and Peele director Peter Atencio), this film should be a hoot.  So, synopsis!

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, a.k.a. the hugely popular comedy duo Key & Peele, star as Clarence and Rell, two cousins who live in the city but are far from streetwise.  When Rell’s beloved kitten, Keanu, is catnapped, the hopelessly straight-laced pair must impersonate ruthless killers in order to infiltrate a street gang and retrieve the purloined feline.  But the incredibly adorable kitten becomes so coveted that the fight over his custody creates a gang war, forcing our two unwitting heroes to take the law into their own hands.

I’m afraid I might spend the whole movie cooing over the adorable kitten…but I’m willing to take that chance.  Are you?  Well then… Continue reading

TrailerWatch: “The Girl on the Train” mystifies

Girl on the train onesheetAnother mystery novel hitting the big screen, and this one looks very twisty.  I mean that in a good way.  Synopsis!

Each day, Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) takes the train to work in London, heading past the town of Witney. The train passes her old house where her ex-husband, Tom (Justin Theroux), and his new wife, Anna (Rebecca Ferguson), live. She can also see the home of another married couple a few houses down. Rachel becomes endeared to this couple, whom Rachel nicknames ‘Jess and Jason’ (Haley Bennett and Luke Evans). They appear to have the perfect life, and Rachel is both envious and happy for them. One day while passing their house, Rachel witnesses something that changes everything she thought about the couple. Then Jess goes missing, and Rachel wonders if she is somehow connected to her disappearance.

Hmm…  All I can say is Emily Blunt is amazing in this trailer, and I’m always up for seeing Rebecca Ferguson, Laura Prepon, Allison Janney and Luke Evans on the big screen. Listen closely as you watch this trailer, and you’ll hear Kanye West doing an eerie cover of his “Heartless”. Ooh, spoopy!

The Girl on the Train comes into the station on October 7th, 2016.

TrailerWatch: “The Magnificent Seven” saddles up!

The Magnificent Seven banner“I seek righteousness.  But I’ll take revenge.”

I’ve always been a fan of 1960’s The Magnificent Seven.  Then again, I’m a huge fan of Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai, the film Mag7 is based on.  So when I heard that Antoine Fuqua (Olympus Has Fallen, The Equalizer) was helming a remake?  Oh yeah baby.  And this first-look trailer doesn’t disappoint.  Synopsis!

Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven.  With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier).  As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

I’m loving the multicultural vibe of this film; it’s a representation of what the Wild West was made up of, so it feels natural.

Check out the trailer…The Magnificent Seven straps on their holsters September 23rd, 2016.

Captain America Civil War first onesheetTime to pick a side, y’all.  Whether it’s it’s peanut butter v jelly, sunrise v sunset, cookie v cream, we all must choose.  (Except for cookies; the answer’s both, naturally.)

With Captain America: Civil War, it’s about what our gang of Avengers believe is right.  Synopsis!

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

This time, the Pass-palooza is hard copy.  Which means it’s contest time!  And it also means that there’s only a handful, because Marvel is not overbooking this screening.  EVERY PASSHOLDER GETS A SEAT.  So, ready?  Here we go… Continue reading

Elsewhere Review: Everybody Wants Some!!

As always, clicky the title below for the original piece!

Movie Review: Everybody Wants Some!!

everybody wants some onesheet“I know what we’re doing here.  We’re playing baseball.  What are all these other people doing here?”

Liked Dazed and Confused, with it’s ensemble cast and “day in the life of” vibe?  Well then, Everybody Wants Some!! will be more of the same, straight from D&C‘s Richard Linklater.  Everybody is a cool-ass trip for those of us who grew up in the 80s, but could scare a lot of kids who don’t really wanna know what their parents were up to when they were young.

Everybody starts off at fictional Southern Texas University in August, 1980, with baseball-scholarship frosh Jake getting to his digs for the year.  The baseball team has been given two houses just off campus, to help with the overcrowding at the dorms.  Jake meets his teammates, bon-vivant Finn (Glen Powell, Scream Queens), stoner Willoughby (Wyatt Russell), laid-back Dale (J. Quinton Johnson), badass Mac (Tyler Hoechlin, Teen Wolf) and many more.   He’s one of four freshmen added to the roster that year, so in the days before school officially starts, he’s got to navigate the new world of college as well as the bro-culture bonding of his House.  Not to mention finding the time to figure out who that cute girl is he saw when he first arrived. (That’d be Beverly, played by Ringer‘s Zoey Deutch…) No problem.  Bring on the keg stands! Continue reading
