31 in 31 – “Hush”

“We can have some fun. Enjoy it.”

Story: Maddie Young, a talented writer, has just published her latest novel, Midnight Mass. She lives in a beautiful home out in the sticks, to focus on her work. But there’s something she doesn’t know; there’s a serial killer in the woods tonight. And there’s something that killer doesn’t know; Maddie cannot hear or speak, but she’s no pushover.

Scares: Tons. This is a chilling home invasion film.

31 in 31 – Roanoke Gaming’s “Biology of Movies” playlist!

Where my fellow science nerds at?Because Roanoke Gaming’s YouTube channel is stuffed with all sorts of cool scientific breakdowns of horror movies and video games. From 28 Days Later to Pumpkinhead, Splinter to Dawn of the Dead, there’s lots of icky to enjoy.

Did I mention that Roanoke is a microbiologist as his IRL Job? Because he is, and he gets extremely in-depth with his theories.

Be prepared to get lost in science, in the very best way. And then have a glass of warm milk or cuppa before bed. You may need to self-soothe.

31 in 31 – “Blood Quantum”

“Who says we’re immune? Maybe the earth just forgot about us.”

Story: It’s 1981. In the Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow in Quebec, things are starting to turn strange. Fish are flopping around after they’ve been gutted. Dogs who’ve been put down rise up. And white people are dying and turning into zombies. The Mi’gmaq are immune to the virus, but not immune to being eaten alive… So six months later, their reserve is a fortress. But should they help uninfected white people survive?

Scares: Mostly sadness at how the world works during a pandemic, in-between hard hitting gross outs.

31 in 31 – my very own “Halloween’s Greatest Hits” on Spotify!

Here’s a playlist for you, so you can get your spooky groove on. As I’ve been doing “31 in 31” and yearly Halloween playlists for 10 years now (GASP!), it’s time to retire the playlist because let’s face it, I’ll only start repeating myself.

So here’s a gathering of my very favorite Halloween tunes, many of which have made an appearance in earlier playlists. But today, finally, all my dearest tunes are together at last. Enjoy!

31 in 31 – Breckenridge Brewery Autumn Ale

Here – have another beer review in “31 in 31”! Because I’m stuck at home, so bottom’s up. From Green Man last Sunday. Kanpai, bitches.

Welcome to the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! No, not the holiday season; the arrival of dark beers. Huzzah! And this ale is a lovely start to my dark beer season.

Pouring the brew gets you a khaki colored head that dissipates quickly, leaving a ring of bubbles around your glass. The nose isn’t much to write home about, but to be honest? I’m not upset by that. In a season where beers tend to grab you by the nosehairs and demand you pay attention to all their additives, taking a sniff and getting clean, sweet, caramel-nut notes – ones that don’t yell at you but whisper enticements – is a refreshing change. That refreshment carries over to every sip you’ll take. Continue reading

31 in 31 – “I Like to Watch Horror”

“Spoiler alert: if you don’t know these classic films, go to your parents house and slap the shit out of your own mother.”

I absolutely adore Trixie and Katya. I absolutely adore horror movies. So hello, two great tastes! And ZOMG Katya’s fangs are awesome!

T&K looks at several horror movies, giving their own opinions on each. And it’s fantastic. Because don’t we all stan Anjelica Huston and Bruce Campbell? Yes we do.

Netflix, please never stop the “I Like to Watch” series… And maybe make another horror-centric episode?

31 in 31 – “Flesh and Blood: the Hammer Heritage of Horror”

“Charming. So unlike the home life of our Dear Queen.”

Story: The life and times of Hammer Studios, the famous British “fear factory”.

Scares: Only if you’re easily spooked by the sound of Lee’s voice. Not that I’d blame you.

31 in 31 – “Horror and Hamsters”

“Why’d you take us to the basement?… I mean, the back door was RIGHT THERE!”

Story: Victoria wants to make a horror anthology! Her brother Ray wants hamsters to be in it. Mom says they have to work together…and roll film!

Scares: Not really, though the FX in a few of the horror vignettes are not too shabby and may freak out n00bs.

Splat factor: A bit of obviously fake blood and assorted parts (human, not hamster) sometimes make the scene.

31 in 31 – “Threads”

“Everybody alright?”
*sobbing*

Story: Ruth and Ritchie are getting married! Mazel! (Okay so Ruth’s preggers, but the very young couple would have gotten around to marriage soon enough.) Then things start getting weird in the world, with talks of nuclear war. Soon, bombs are dropping, and things are more than weird, they’re straight up horrifying. Will Ruth and her unborn baby survive? Will anyone?

Scares: After the bombs, the whole film is a nightmare.

31 in 31 – Shiner Oktoberfest

Yeah, so I stole another review from Green Man…but it’s Oktoberfest season y’all, and this is a brand new one, circa yesterday. With some of these movies I’ve been watching? Booze is a requirement, not an option. (Unless you don’t imbibe. Then get yourself silly on the sugar of your choice.)

It’s Fall!  And yes, that means Decorative Gourd Season, but it also means all things Fall-y, including Oktoberfests and Halloweenie. Even Texas brewery Shiner has gotten in on the action, delivering an easy to quaff Marzen (a German beer style bottled in the Spring and left to age nicely ‘til cooler temps return). And I think I’ve found my favorite of this style right here in this can. Not a great shock, as I’m a fan of all things Shiner, especially their absolutely yummy Black. Continue reading
