#31in31 2019 – OSP’s “H.P. Lovecraft” video!

Feelin’ lazy? Getting a nip in the air, so it’s time to settle in and veg out on the YouTubes? ME TOO. So gear up with this great video from one of my all-time favorite YouTubers, Overly Sarcastic Productions. (It’s like they’ve geared their channel to me…)

We’ll dig back into movies tomorrow, but today? Let’s learn something about the author that gave us a fear of all things with tentacles. Except you, little cuttlefish. You’re adorable. Who’s a widdle cutie? YOU ARE.

#31in31 2019 – “Mom and Dad:

🎶”… if I could only tell you what’s in my heart, but it would be so wrong…” 🎶

Story: Kids. I don’t know what’s wrong with these kids today! But unlike Bye Bye Birdie, the adults in this film don’t complain. They kill. Blame a strange static on the TV for turning parents fillicidal …or maybe it’s just pent up rage at the changes time hath wrought?

Scares: Chills as things start, but then it’s full Nick Cage Crazy.

Splat factor: Mostly offscreen kills with only bloody messes as the aftermath. Continue reading

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: “Dolemite is My Name”!

Eddie Murphy is back! And this 70s biopic looks like a whole lot of fun. Synopsis!

Stung by a string of showbiz failures, floundering comedian Rudy Ray Moore (Academy Award nominee Eddie Murphy) has an epiphany that turns him into a word-of-mouth sensation: step onstage as someone else. Borrowing from the street mythology of 1970s Los Angeles, Moore assumes the persona of Dolemite, a pimp with a cane and an arsenal of obscene fables. However, his ambitions exceed selling bootleg records deemed too racy for mainstream radio stations to play. Moore convinces a social justice-minded dramatist (Keegan-Michael Key) to write his alter ego a film, incorporating kung fu, car chases, and Lady Reed (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), an ex-backup singer who becomes his unexpected comedic foil. Despite clashing with his pretentious director, D’Urville Martin (Wesley Snipes), and countless production hurdles at their studio in the dilapidated Dunbar Hotel, Moore’s Dolemite becomes a runaway box office smash and a defining movie of the Blaxploitation era.

DVD Review: Savage Nature DVD set

Four SyFy movies in this set, and they’re everything you’ve come to expect from the TV channel that loves B movies. Silly dialogue, actors trying their very best, and DAT SWEET CGI.

Like Houses of HellDVD Review: House Of Hell 4 movie set, the case has a very, very powerful chemical nasty wafting off of it. Air this puppy out. As for the movies themselves, well they’re pretty stinky too. Sorry. Let’s break it down. Continue reading

#31in31 2019 – The Dead House

Welcome to my yearly 31 in 31! Happy October!

“This really is a magnificent house. Really lovely things here.”

Story: Three psychotic killers (okay, two and the requisite “I don’t want to be here” member) pick the wrong house to mess with. No, not Charles Bronson’s pad. One where the dad is a scientist with very dangerous research subjects. Zombies, I’m talking about zombies.

Scares: Lots of tension that bleeds (heh) into slow burn one-by-one zombie takedowns.

Splat factor: psycho killers and the undead. Yeah. Definitely high splat. Continue reading

“Abominable” – come for the cute, stay for the adventure

“Woop!”

Story: Young Yi (Chloe Bennet) is still grieving the loss of her father, even though her mother and Nai Nai have tried to console her. Yi keeps herself constantly busy, and secretly plays her father’s violin on the rooftop late at night. But one night she finds something that’s not typically on rooftops. Something really large. Something really scared. And something that wants to go home…

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: “Joker”!

Ready for smiles? Synopsis!

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fracturedsociety. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
