Catching Up Review: “Hellboy” could have been great, but it’s not.

Because sometimes I don’t get to a screening, or a film just isn’t screened for press. Herewith, my take on the Hellboy reboot!

It is, however, a whole lot of messy, stupid fun if you can get past the screenplay that crams so much into it that nothing makes sense. This film has moments that hint at the incredible film it could have been, but never reached. Hell, it has a hard enough time grabbing stuff from the lowest shelf, let alone a high bar. That’s a pity, as this film deals with questions like who decides what’s monstrous, the outsider, and the family you choose, yet it buries those ideas deep in the ground, and dishes up a lack of emotional payoff instead.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the monsters this film trots out. I enjoyed the effects; even the silliest CGI works in this universe. And seeing Ian McShane, Mila Jovovich, Daniel Dae Kim and David Harbour is always a good time. But re-watch American Gods, Resident Evil, Hawaii 5-O and Stranger Things before deciding to plunk down your hard-earned here. Because the behind-the-scenes drama bleeds into the Hellboy, destroying everything in its path.

Movie News: “Child’s Play” reboot shares first images!

Gotta admit I wasn’t really into the Child’s Play series. Except for Bride of Chucky, I like my horror dolls to be of the Zuni Fetish variety. But with Aubrey Plaza playing the mom in this reboot, this Play might have a fun wry spin. Synopsis!

A contemporary re-imagining of the 1988 horror classic, Child’s Play follows Karen (Aubrey Plaza), a single mother who gifts her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman) a Buddi doll, unaware of its more sinister nature.

Child’s Play hits theaters June 21st, 2019.

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: “The Curse of La Llorona”!

Ready to go get some chills? Because I’ve got passes for the newest Conjuring joint, La Llorona! Synopsis!

This timeless Hispanic legend comes to terrifying life in “The Curse of La Llorona.” La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations. In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain. Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious…and her methods more terrifying. In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a curandero, and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide. Beware of her chilling wail…she will stop at nothing to lure you into the gloom. Because there is no peace for her anguish. There is no mercy for her soul. And there is no escape from the curse of La Llorona.

Elsewhere Reviews: Reese’s Outrageous! Pieces bar

Originally posted over at The Green Man Review!

I love peanut butter, I love chocolate, I love caramel. And I really dig Reese’s Pieces. But Outrageous is less the sum of its parts. And that’s a real shame.

The bar has a nice weight to it, and the look reminds me of a Baby Ruth or 100 Grand. But instead of peanuts or crisped rice, Outrageous uses mini Reese’s Pieces to surround a core of Reese’s peanut butter coated in caramel. It’s covered in the usual milk chocolate you’d find in a Reese’s cup, and it was fun to bite “sideways” and get a chunk of chocolate and mini’s.

But this bar can get messy. My first bite sent several minis falling onto the table, along with some mini-sized pieces of chocolate coating. There doesn’t seem to be quite enough caramel to hold things together, though the caramel does stretch out nicely from the bar with each bite. Then it hit me; there was too much mini, not enough ensemble cast. Sure, I could see caramel. I could see chocolate. And every so often I could see that peanut butter core, though it’s much too small to make any kind of impression – I had to dig around with a mini-fork to try to get a taste of it. This is more a Reese’s Pieces bar than a melding of ingredients.

Because minis make up the majority flavor profile (90% of the time that’s all you’ll taste), it also extremely sweet. The minis are front and center, but all the sugar from the caramel, core and chocolate hit the tongue after a few chews, leaving my stomach unhappy after a few bites. My brain threatened sugar-rush headache as well, leaving me slightly nauseated and unhappy with the whole experience. I can’t imagine finishing the entire bar in one go. In fact, I’d much rather have each item separately, or simply wait for them to re-issue their vastly superior Reese’s Nutrageous bars that has peanuts instead of minis. I suggest you do the same.

“Shazam!” flies high

“I’m a foster mom – what’s your superpower?”

Story: Billy Batson only wants one thing in this world; to be reunited with the mother he was separated from during a busy carnival when he was a toddler. But Billy’s gonna get a whole lot more than that, when an ancient wizard bestows All The Power onto 14-year-old Billy. When another super-powered human brings the pain – and monsters – I’m sure things will go…heroically.

Genre I’d put it in: Successful DCEU Films

Remake, Sequel, Based-On, or Original: Based on the Captain Marvel/Shazam comics created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. (Not to be confused with Marvel’s Captain Marvel. That’s a whole ‘nother messy thing.) Continue reading
