TrailerWatch: Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” takes a surreal, absorbing look at WWII

Taika Waititi as an idiotic imaginary Hitler. SIGN ME UP. I’m getting a strong What We Do in the Shadows goofy satire vibe off of this, with touches of Wes Anderson and Monty Python. And I’ll bet they’ll be touching, learning-time moments as well. Oh how I wish I was at TIFF for the premiere… Synopsis!

Lonely German boy Jojo “Rabbit” Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) has his world view turned upside down when he discovers that his single mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of love seem undimmed as she embarks on a whirlwind romance with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer.

TrailerWatch “Disney’s Mulan” thinks on honor and duty while kicking ass

This first teaser trailer for the live action Mulan ain’t bad y’all. Yes I’m still tetchy about the possibility of swapping dragon Mushu with a phoenix, and Disney booting all the singing (OH COME ON)…

But I’m definitely here for the gorgeous wide shots of training warriors. And, of course, Gong Li as Mulan’s mother, because Li is perfection.

Give it a look – I’m still grumpy over the proposed changes, but I have to admit I’m impressed as hell with this teaser. Mulan hits theaters next year.

Blu-ray Review: “Shark Bait” – 6 Killer Shark Movies!

411: Ready for Shark Week? Yeah baby, it’s hitting town July 28th through August 4th. These so-bad-they’re-great movies may not get you into the water this summer (BECAUSE SHARKS), but they will have you enjoying the hell out of yourself. Get ready for implausible stories, new romances kindled by disaster, and creative as hell deaths with hilariously awful FX.

These originally on SyFy movies are just what the doctor ordered, if you’re in the mood for some Sharknado-type fun. And each of these films delivers a slightly different spin on the “shark’s gonna getcha” story, so things don’t get dull. The Blu-ray transfer on these films is great – probably because each film has already spent time on the small screen via cable – so the hilariously cheesy FX are crystal clear.
