Elsewhere Review: “Funko’s Rock Candy Thirteenth Doctor Vinyl Collectible”

Originally published at The Green Man Review!

She’s here! And she’s fantastic.

I was one of those people who was stoked at the idea of a female Doctor. Why not? The show has done all different ages and attitudes with the Doctor’s regenerations, why not shift a chromosome or two (because who knows how many genes the Doctor has? Or if the Doctor even has genes…) And I’m happy to say that I’m enjoying the series so far. Yay! Continue reading

“Bumblebee” is the Transformers movie long-time fans have been waiting for

Nutshell: Though Spielberg and Bay are both producers on this revamp of the series, this story is definitely more Steve than Mike. And thank Unicron for that. By creating characters worth caring about (including Bee) and a compelling story that goes beyond chase-and-boom, this film has heart, soul…and explosions. Great work by Stanfield – working with all that top-notch CGI couldn’t have been easy, but she makes it look effortless. Grade: A

“You’re actually talking! And you’re listening to The Smiths!”

Okay, it’s Awards Season and there’s a glut of screenings between December holidays, so let’s do this fast! (Or fast-ish.) Bumblebee is really good. Like, “oh man this is what I was hoping for with a Transformers movie” good. “Left that Michael Bay directed schlock in the dust” good.  “Holy crap I can’t  believe I just gave a Transformers movie an A” good. But trust me; this is one movie where you don’t have to sheepishly tell your friends you’re going as a guilty pleasure. Go because it’s a compelling story that just so happens to have some awesome action pieces. Continue reading

“Who you callin monster pal, you look in the mirror recently?”

It’s here, and a day early to boot! The new Hellboy movie is coming next year, and Lionsgate has just dropped a taste. And it’s delicious.

One thing though. Next trailer? I need kittens. But right now I’m okay with this. I’ma watch again.

“Aquaman” – DC does fine but could have done better

“Hurry up – I’m missing happy hour for this.”

Story: Arthur Curry has a lighthouse keeper for a dad and the Queen of Atlantis for a mom. Sure, he can put away a pint or twelve with the best of ’em, but can he step up when Atlantis needs a hero? What do you think?

Genre I’d Put It In: Fun But Clunky Superhero Flicks

Remake, Sequel, Based-On, or Original: Based on the DC superhero, part of the DC Cinematic Universe.

Gotta say: I want to like Aquaman more than I do. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and I’m not just talking about Mera (Amber Heard) and Aquaman/Arthur (Jason Momoa). The cinematography and CGI are absolutely astounding; think Avatar underwater. Even when the plot takes us to the Sahara, there’s a beautiful vastness to the shots that took my breath away. Sure, the costumes look a bit Inhumans, and the final superhero gold & green looks absolutely silly on Momoa (seriously – a more antiqued color scheme would have done wonders), but the attention to detail made my heart go pitter-pat. Elsewhere Review: Pat Cadigan and Paul Dini’s DC Comics Novels – Harley Quinn: Mad Love

Originally published on December 9th, 2018, at The Green Man Review!

“If resistance to Batman was a crime, then crime was a revolutionary act.”

Everybody loves Harley Quinn. Well maybe Batman thinks she’s kind of a pain, but let’s not talk about him right now, shall we? Harley’s today’s star, and for fans who’ve always wanted to know how Harley got her start, DC Comics got you covered with “Mad Love”. First published as a one-shot comic book in 1994, it became arguably the best known episode of The New Batman Adventures in 1999. The story of Dr. Harleen Quinzel’s transformation into villain/anti-hero Harley Quinn is well known nowadays; the good doctor treats psychotic supervillain the Joker, and through his manipulation, she falls in love with him and joins his gang. Good story, right? Right. Continue reading

Rapid Review: “Mary Queen of Scots”

(Because really; award season means you’re trying to winnow down the musts from the must-pass.)

“I know your heart has more in it than the men who counsel you.”

An epic true story gets a intimate imagining in this beautiful biopic based on Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I. Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie deliver award-worthy performances as the two queens, while David Tennant gives great skeevy religious fanatic. Queer representation as well as POC at court portrays a more realistic look at 16th Century England (even if not exactly historically correct in terms of actual members of court.) But Scots is best at painting a picture of two women used as chess pieces by the machinations of men in their service. Oh, what might have been, if these leaders had been left to rule as they saw fit. Grade: A-
