Critics’ Choice Awards 2019 – ties! Black Panther! Ms. Maisel!

The 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards were held last night, and while there were some expected outcomes – looking at you, winners Christian Bale, Rachel Brosnahan and best song “Shallow” – there were a few happy surprises.

I love how much love Black Panther got, especially as early in the year films often get overlooked come end of the year award time. Speaking of overlooked, I really need to go see First Reformed, as screenwriter Paul Schrader nabbed best screenplay. It’s been on my list, but I’ve never gotten around to it. Til now.

But the stunner of the night were the ties for Best Actress; both the main film and TV categories had ties, giving awards to Lady Gaga, Glen Close, Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette.

Read Entertainment Weekly’s fabulous piece that lists all the winners. Congratulations, all!

“On the Basis of Sex”

“You’re a smart girl, Ruthie. You married a star!”

Story: The real-life story of Kiki Bader Ginsburg, and how she went from law school student, wife and mother to a Supreme Court justice. Yeah, her nickname is Kiki. That’s simply wonderful.

Genre I’d put it in: Captivating Biopics

Remake, Sequel, Based-On, or Original: Based on the original Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Notorious R.B.G. herself. Continue reading

Elsewhere Review: Doctor Who Season Eleven

Happy New Year! Sorry for the gap, but I’ve been crunching through movies like a mad-woman (apt description, that one) the past few weeks. So, here’s my review of the latest Doctor Who season, originally published at The Green Man Review!

“Are you a doctor? Shame. I’m looking for a doctor.”

Eleven new seasons. Thirteenth doctor. Jodie Whittaker. With me? Good. Let’s do this.

I was not a fan of the last doctor. Felt like he was odd for odd’s sake, and let’s face it; the majority of season ten eps were crap. All apologies to Peter Capaldi, but the stories last season were awful. My friend and I said “well, what the hell just happened here” so often I’ve lost count. But this season? It’s fantastic.

The new Doctor loves bobbing for apples candy floss, purple sofas, and fast talking. Really fast talking. Folks who aren’t used to the glory that’s the Yorkshire accent may need a moment or two to get with the flow. But I absolutely adore it – hello Sean Bean, Brian Blessed and Dame Judi Dench! – so I dug in immediately.

Elsewhere Review: Smashmallow’s Cinnamon Churro marshmallow

Originally published over at The Green Man Review!

‘Tis the season for warm festive beverages! And for all the things to top ’em. Nutmeg for nog, a cinnamon stick for mulled goodness, and for folk who partake of animal products (ex: gelatin), marshmallows for coffee and chocolate-centric libations. I have a love-hate relationship with marshmallows. I love how they bob on the top of my drink, but hate that most of the time I’m left with a soggy bit of ‘mallow bloof (it’s a word because I just used it) as I empty my mug. However, that’s about to change, thanks to Smashmallow. Continue reading

Elsewhere Review: “Funko’s Rock Candy Thirteenth Doctor Vinyl Collectible”

Originally published at The Green Man Review!

She’s here! And she’s fantastic.

I was one of those people who was stoked at the idea of a female Doctor. Why not? The show has done all different ages and attitudes with the Doctor’s regenerations, why not shift a chromosome or two (because who knows how many genes the Doctor has? Or if the Doctor even has genes…) And I’m happy to say that I’m enjoying the series so far. Yay! Continue reading

“Bumblebee” is the Transformers movie long-time fans have been waiting for

Nutshell: Though Spielberg and Bay are both producers on this revamp of the series, this story is definitely more Steve than Mike. And thank Unicron for that. By creating characters worth caring about (including Bee) and a compelling story that goes beyond chase-and-boom, this film has heart, soul…and explosions. Great work by Stanfield – working with all that top-notch CGI couldn’t have been easy, but she makes it look effortless. Grade: A

“You’re actually talking! And you’re listening to The Smiths!”

Okay, it’s Awards Season and there’s a glut of screenings between December holidays, so let’s do this fast! (Or fast-ish.) Bumblebee is really good. Like, “oh man this is what I was hoping for with a Transformers movie” good. “Left that Michael Bay directed schlock in the dust” good.  “Holy crap I can’t  believe I just gave a Transformers movie an A” good. But trust me; this is one movie where you don’t have to sheepishly tell your friends you’re going as a guilty pleasure. Go because it’s a compelling story that just so happens to have some awesome action pieces. Continue reading
