TrailerWatch: “Fifty Shades Darker” gets thrilling

fifty-shades-darker-onesheetGet your mind out of the gutter.  By “thrilling”, I mean suspenseful, and maybe a touch of action-genre hijinks? I’ve never been a fan of the books – or their source material. (Even though both have intriguing mythologies, jeebus that’s some bad writing. I outta know from bad writing.) Gotta admit this teaser has me curious though.  And I guess that’s the point now, isn’t it?  Bonus points for Kim Basinger’s brief appearance.  Just enough to get your WTF’s on. Synopsis!

While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her.

Darker could actually make for an interesting film, with it’s deeper dig into Christian’s past.  The original film didn’t do much more than throw Christian and Anastasia into a room, and I can get that in any number of free Kindle “erotica” tales.  Here’s hoping director James Foley (of the incredible Glengarry Glen Ross) makes more headway with E.L. “I Have More Control Over My Property Than I Really Should” James than poor Sam Taylor-Johnson did with Grey.

TrailerWatch: “The Mummy” dusts off some serious action…and a peek at the Universal Monsters universe

mummy-2017-poster“Please meet Princess Ahmanet.  She will claim what she has been denied.”

OOH!  Russell Crowe is definitely putting a malevolent edge on that introduction.  And I’m loving it. Crowe ain’t just saying hello for her royal wrapped-ness, but for the new Universal Monsters shared universe.

There’s a definite Monsters-Meet-Mission-Impossible vibe here, but it works with the source material, and of course Tom Cruise’s ability to kick major onscreen stunt ass.  And with Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, this universe is definitely looking to spread its wings.  Synopsis!

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

Here’s hoping the Princess is as badass in the film as she is in these quick peeks…and that Jekyll gets his Hyde on as well.  Because a monster universe is definitely one I’d sign up for.   The Mummy unwraps June 9th, 2017.

TrailerWatch: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” gives us Rocket, Groot, Drax, and Foxes on the run

guardians-vol-2-posterWho loves Baby Groot?  *sees a sea of hands* I thought so.  Well, Marvel has popped up a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and it’s every bit as fun as the first go-round.  Including a killer soundtrack, which has one of my all-time favorite “when I was a kid” songs, “Fox on the Run”.  You get me, Marvel.  You really do.

But what I really love is the father/son dynamic Rocket and Groot have, now that Groot is Baby Groot.  I swear I clutched my heart at least 4 times during this trailer, thanks to all the cuteness.  But watch for Drax being all kinds of hilarious, as he starts to really open up…

Guardians 2 hits theaters May 2017. I am Groot!

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: “Sing”!

sing onesheetStill in a musical mood after this afternoon’s passes?  Well I’ve got the cure; more passes!  I’ve got passes for the Baltimore screening of Sing, and it looks like it’s gonna be a lot of fun.  Synopsis!

Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (McConaughey), a dapper koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times.  Buster is an eternal—some might even say delusional—optimist who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it.  Now faced with the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.

Five lead contestants emerge: Mike (MacFarlane), a mouse who croons as smoothly as he cons; Meena (Kelly), a timid teenage elephant with an enormous case of stage fright; Rosita (Witherspoon), an overtaxed mother run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets; Johnny (Egerton), a young gangster gorilla looking to break free of his family’s felonies; and Ash (Johansson), a punk-rock porcupine struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo. Each arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life.  And as Buster coaches each of his contestants closer and closer to the grand finale, he starts to learn that maybe the theater isn’t the only thing that is in need of saving.

TrailerWatch: “The Mummy” teaser sends Cruise to the crypt

mummy-2017-posterI know what you’re thinking. A new remake of The Mummy? And…no. This time it’s a new spin on the classic Universal Monsters (yeah, there’s two…), and if this 15 second sneak peek at the new Tom Cruise helmed The Mummy is any indication, it’s gonna be a wild ride.

I’m already loving the cool makeup FX on the mummy, and the amazing CGI.  C’mon, those eyes?  WHOA.  Here’s a brief synopsis:

Baltimore Screening Pass-palooza: Jackie!

jackie-posterThis year has been terrific for biopics and docu-dramas.  But do you have room for one more?  Because I have screening passes for the Baltimore area screening of Jackie, about the former first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Synopsis!

JACKIE is a searing and intimate portrait of one of the most important and tragic moments in American history, seen through the eyes of the iconic First Lady, then Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (Natalie Portman). JACKIE places us in her world during the days immediately following her husband’s assassination. Known for her extraordinary dignity and poise, here we see a psychological portrait of the First Lady as she struggles to maintain her husband’s legacy and the world of “Camelot” that they created and loved so well.

TrailerWatch: “Silence” speaks of religious persecution in 17th Century Japan

Martin Scorsese’s Silence is slated to hit theaters December 23rd, and now we get a peek at the finished product.  And it looks amazing.  In fact, I want to grab Shūsaku Endō’s book (which this film is based on) and give it a read before this film hits theaters.

Am I embarrassed that as a Sansei, I never knew that this occurred?  Yep.  Do I know want to know more about this period?  Absolutely.  Give this trailer a look for yourself.
